From fbbccdfffb16e8e347dfc054ce6a36e7686f06d5 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: iback Date: Mon, 31 Aug 2026 07:02:27 +0000 Subject: [PATCH] feat(np_utils): add np_voronoi_labels and np_expand_labels Upstreams the nearest-label partition from voronoi-loss's make_voronoi_arr, keeping its semantics: labelled voxels keep their positive label, background voxels carry the negated label of the region they were assigned to, and voxels exactly equidistant to two different regions are set to 0 instead of being broken arbitrarily. The algorithm is panoptica's (Apache-2.0, panoptica/_functionals.py _get_voronoi_regions): a single Euclidean feature transform of the background, since the nearest background voxel of `arr == 0` is exactly the nearest labelled voxel of `arr`. voronoi-loss instead ran one full-array distance transform per label and needed a Ray cluster and a spill directory to make that tractable. On a 128^3 volume with 150 labels this is 1.9s against 55.8s for the original loop on one core, and unlike the original the cost does not grow with the label count. The equidistant voxels the original got for free from its per-label loop have to be recovered afterwards, because distance_transform_edt picks one nearest source and never reports that the choice was arbitrary. _np_voronoi_ties finds them by restricting to voxels next to a change in the assignment and testing each of their neighbours' nearest sources for being at exactly the same distance. Any such source is a real foreground voxel, so a hit is always a genuine tie - the test can miss one, but never invent one. In practice it is exact: the result is voxel-identical to the original on random 2D and 3D masks, and to a brute-force per-voxel reference. Added on top of the original: label_ref to partition by a subset, max_distance to leave far background voxels empty, zoom for anisotropic spacing, and flags to turn off the signing and the tie handling. np_expand_labels is that plain form, the unbounded and spacing-aware sibling of np_dilate_msk_euclid.
