From 093d572f648394ffe4949779f67455e0d5ad93e0 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Choudhry Shehryar Date: Mon, 5 Oct 2026 11:21:10 +0500 Subject: [PATCH] parse_lines: avoid O(n^2) string rebuild on line continuations Each continuation line was merged into the accumulated value with f"{last.value}\n{data}", which rebuilds and copies the entire accumulated string on every continuation line. For a value spread across N continuation lines that's O(N) work per line, O(N^2) total - confirmed locally: 50k lines ~1.6s, 100k lines ~7.7s, 200k lines ~32.6s, consistent with quadratic scaling. A single pathological ini file in the low tens of MB can cost tens of seconds to minutes of CPU. Accumulate continuation fragments in a list per in-progress entry and join once when the entry is finalized (a new value/section line starts, or parsing ends), instead of rebuilding the string each line. Preserves the original's exact falsy-value semantics (an empty/falsy accumulated value gets replaced by the next fragment rather than newline-joined, matching the original's "if last.value: concat, else: replace" check) - verified with a differential test that runs both the original algorithm (kept as a test oracle) and the new one across 10 edge cases (empty values, falsy continuations interleaved with real ones, continuations right after a section header, etc.) and asserts identical results, plus a scaling test confirming the fix (linear, not quadratic). Full existing suite (71 tests total) passes unchanged. mypy --strict and ruff clean. --- src/iniconfig/_parse.py | 45 +++++++-- testing/test_parse_lines_perf.py | 151 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 2 files changed, 187 insertions(+), 9 deletions(-) create mode 100644 testing/test_parse_lines_perf.py diff --git a/src/iniconfig/_parse.py b/src/iniconfig/_parse.py index 57b9b44..d563520 100644 --- a/src/iniconfig/_parse.py +++ b/src/iniconfig/_parse.py @@ -70,32 +70,59 @@ def parse_lines( ) -> list[ParsedLine]: result: list[ParsedLine] = [] section = None + # The value of the most recently appended entry, while it's still + # eligible to receive continuation lines, is accumulated here as a + # list of fragments instead of being rebuilt as a single string on + # every continuation line - string-concatenating the whole value on + # each line made parsing an N-line continued value take O(N^2) time. + # `pending_fragments` mirrors the exact semantics of the original + # "if last.value: concat, else: replace" logic: it stays None (not + # yet "started") until the first non-empty fragment arrives, and + # every fragment from that point on is appended and later joined + # with "\n", matching what repeated string concatenation produced. + pending_index: int | None = None + pending_fragments: list[str] | None = None + + def flush_pending() -> None: + nonlocal pending_index, pending_fragments + if pending_index is not None: + # If pending_fragments is None, the value never became + # truthy (the entry's own initial value, set at creation + # below, is already the correct falsy value - "" either + # way - so there's nothing to rewrite). + if pending_fragments is not None: + result[pending_index] = result[pending_index]._replace( + value="\n".join(pending_fragments) + ) + pending_index = None + pending_fragments = None + for lineno, line in enumerate(line_iter): name, data = _parseline( path, line, lineno, strip_inline_comments, strip_section_whitespace ) # new value if name is not None and data is not None: + flush_pending() result.append(ParsedLine(lineno, section, name, data)) + pending_index = len(result) - 1 + pending_fragments = [data] if data else None # new section elif name is not None and data is None: + flush_pending() if not name: raise ParseError(path, lineno, "empty section name") section = name result.append(ParsedLine(lineno, section, None, None)) # continuation elif name is None and data is not None: - if not result: - raise ParseError(path, lineno, "unexpected value continuation") - last = result.pop() - if last.name is None: + if pending_index is None: raise ParseError(path, lineno, "unexpected value continuation") - - if last.value: - last = last._replace(value=f"{last.value}\n{data}") + if pending_fragments: + pending_fragments.append(data) else: - last = last._replace(value=data) - result.append(last) + pending_fragments = [data] if data else None + flush_pending() return result diff --git a/testing/test_parse_lines_perf.py b/testing/test_parse_lines_perf.py new file mode 100644 index 0000000..8d03bde --- /dev/null +++ b/testing/test_parse_lines_perf.py @@ -0,0 +1,151 @@ +"""Regression tests for the O(n^2) line-continuation bug in parse_lines(). + +Each continuation line used to be merged into the accumulated value with +f"{last.value}\n{data}", which rebuilds and copies the entire accumulated +string on every single continuation line.
