Building a distributable installer

The app is a Java 8 Maven project. Distributable installers (with a bundled Java runtime, so end users don't need Java installed) are built with jpackage, which ships with JDK 14+.

Requirements:

  • JDK 8 (to compile, per pom.xml) and Maven, to build target/ORA-<version>.jar
  • JDK 17+ on PATH (or pointed to explicitly) to run jpackage for packaging
  • Windows .msi only: WiX Toolset v3 (candle.exe/light.exe) on PATH — not needed for the portable build
  • macOS only: no extra tools needed beyond JDK 17+; .dmg output uses the built-in macOS tooling

Windows (recommended: portable, no installer)

./win_build_portable.sh 1.3.0

Produces ORA-1.3.0-portable-win.zip. End users extract the zip anywhere and double-click ORA.exe inside — nothing is installed, no admin rights needed, no Windows Installer involved. This is the version to hand out to anyone on a locked-down company machine, since many IT policies block .msi installers outright even when they don't require admin rights.

Windows (.msi installer, needs admin-friendly IT policy)

./win_build.sh 1.3.0

Produces win_installer_out/ORA-1.3.0.msi — installs per-user (not system-wide) with a Start Menu shortcut. Works fine when a machine's IT policy allows per-user .msi installs; use the portable build above if it doesn't.

macOS

./mac_build.sh 1.2.0

Produces mac_build_out/ORA-1.2.0.dmg. Must be run on a Mac (jpackage cannot cross-compile). End users open the .dmg and drag ORA.app to Applications.

Both scripts run mvn clean install first, so you don't need to build the jar separately.
