Version: 26.10.30.1

What does this implement/fix?

Combines Zach's LED strip work (#106) with the ESPHome 2026.10 move (#105) and fixes the review findings. Adds Effect A/B with Pattern and Speed, and Announcement Ducking and Announcement LED Brightness sliders (default 50%, as before). Merging this marks #105 and #106 as merged.

This build needs Music Assistant 2.10.7 or newer. Bench-tested on a CAST-1 built with ESPHome 2026.10.1: the Sendspin handshake completed with Music Assistant 2.10.7, and it joined a group and played.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added adjustable announcement volume ducking and LED brightness controls.
    • Added two selectable LED strip effects with controls for patterns and speed, plus a configurable limit for the number of LEDs.
  • Bug Fixes
    • The media player now unmutes during startup in a specific low-volume muted state and before responding to a volume-up action.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on announcement and LED strip settings, effects, automations, and safety considerations. The minimum supported ESPHome version is now 2026.10.0.

Requires ESPHome 2026.10.0. Bump version to 26.10.25.1.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ESPHome 2026.10 no longer clears mute when the volume changes, so a
muted CAST-1 stayed silent when Volume Up was pressed on the WizMote.

Segments are now partition lights the user adds to their device YAML, so
drop the Segments number, the eight Segment switches, the Segments effect
and its script. Effect A and Effect B render through one shared helper
(led_strip_slot_effect) that partition lights can list too, all driven by
the same Pattern, Speed and Intensity entities.

The LED count is now the led_strip_num_leds substitution (default 30)
instead of the runtime LED Strip Count entity, since partitions need it at
build time. Speed 100 is now 32 ms, two ~16 ms main-loop passes.

The README documents the substitution and a partition example.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Intensity didn't make a visible difference and was confusing, so drop the
Effect A / Effect B Intensity numbers. Flicker now always dips to random
levels between full and 30% brightness, and Strobe is on for one period
and off for the next.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add the announcement_ducking_db and announcement_led_brightness
substitutions to Core.yaml, so the device YAML can override how far
music ducks during an announcement and how bright the onboard LED is.
Document both in the README.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Core.yaml no longer includes led_strip.yaml. A device YAML adds the
strip by listing led_strip.yaml in its packages; the README shows how.

GitHub shrank the Markdown badges to fit the table column, so they're now
HTML images with a fixed height.

GitHub shrinks images to fit table cells, so the buttons were tiny even
with a fixed height. Each blueprint now has its button on its own line.

- Include led_strip.yaml from Core.yaml again
- Bring back the LED Strip Count number; led_strip_num_leds is now the
maximum (default 300) for longer strips and partitions
- Disable the LED strip entities by default
- Replace the announcement substitutions with Announcement Ducking and
  Announcement LED Brightness sliders
- Add Rainbow, Color Wipe, Scan, Twinkle, Pulse and Fireworks to the
  Effect A/B patterns
- Update the README; the partition and device YAML notes move to a
  separate repo

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
They now live in Projects/Halloween2026 with the example device YAML.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Keep the announcement LED at 50% by default, and keep it off at 0
- Unmute once at volume 0 for devices older firmware auto-muted
- Slow Effect B's default strobe to under 3 flashes per second
- Fix stale comments and README notes

Walkthrough

The update changes ESPHome compatibility and media-player controls, adds configurable announcement settings, and extends the external LED strip configuration with adjustable capacity, grouped controls, and selectable effects.

Changes

Media Controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
ESPHome compatibility and player controls
Integrations/ESPHome/Core.yaml, Integrations/ESPHome/wizmote.yaml
The Core configuration updates the firmware version and minimum ESPHome version, replaces esp32_improv with improv_ble, and adds a one-time boot check for a muted player at near-zero volume. The WizMote Volume Up action now unmutes before increasing volume.
Announcement controls
Integrations/ESPHome/Core.yaml, README.md
Restorable controls set announcement ducking from −80 to 0 dB and LED brightness from 0 to 100%. Announcement handling uses the configured values, and the README documents the ranges and defaults.

External LED Strip

Layer / File(s) Summary
Strip capacity and controls
Integrations/ESPHome/led_strip.yaml
The configurable LED limit defaults to 300. Restored and requested counts are clamped to that limit, and strip buffers use it when clearing. Strip controls are grouped in the device web interface.
Selectable LED effects
Integrations/ESPHome/led_strip.yaml, README.md
Effect A and Effect B have separate pattern and speed controls. A shared renderer implements flicker, strobe, rainbow, color wipe, scan, twinkle, pulse, and fireworks. The README documents strip setup and operation.

Zero brightness does not reliably keep the onboard LED off during announcements, and the documentation overstates when it lights up. These are bounded issues to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Explanation

The title names the release, the LED effects, the announcement settings, and the ESPHome 2026.10 update. The raw summary and PR objectives confirm that all three areas are the main changes: the LED strip effect patterns, the Announcement Ducking and LED Brightness controls, and the migration to ESPHome 2026.10. The title is specific, is a single sentence, and does not contain vague terms.

Handle an already-lit LED at zero brightness.

If rgb_light is on when an announcement starts, this condition leaves it on, although the README says zero keeps it off. The cleanup then turns it off after the announcement. Handle the existing light state explicitly when brightness is zero. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Qualify the announcement LED condition in the README.

The sentence says the onboard LED lights up during every announcement. The handler only turns the LED on when Announcement LED Brightness is above 0. The README's own zero-setting bullet says the LED stays off at 0. The sentence should state the brightness condition.

At 0, the announcement does not turn the LED on. An LED that is already lit stays lit during the announcement and turns off when the announcement ends.
