Memoize getUserConfig to avoid repeated storage reads - #1123
Cache getUserConfig() per extension context and share concurrent storage reads, while returning an independent deep copy to each caller.
Invalidate on settings and browser language changes, excluding conversation history writes. Keep failed migrations retryable and prevent older in-flight reads from overwriting newer cached results.
Read fresh settings at action and request boundaries so completed settings changes apply immediately. Reuse one configuration snapshot throughout each ChatGPT Web generation and cleanup, and use cloneDeep for older Safari compatibility. Add regression coverage for delayed storage events, including foreground Bing authentication, Escape handling, and return-tab selection. Keep failed Escape and Go Back actions retryable.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Configuration changes are reflected more reliably in chat generation, language preferences, service requests, context menus, and selection tools—even before browser storage notifications arrive.
Chat requests consistently use the settings active when they start, including service endpoints and model preferences.
Failed configuration migrations can be retried rather than leaving outdated settings in use.
Language selection, token cleanup, chat-window behavior, and Go Back actions use up-to-date settings.
Configuration read errors are handled without continuing the affected action.

getUserConfig supports cached and fresh reads, shares pending reads, and returns deep copies. Relevant local-storage and locale changes invalidate cached values. Failed migration writes prevent caching and allow later retries. Tests cover cache ordering, migration persistence, cross-context reads, and storage events.

Cache user config reads with safe invalidation and fresh action reads
✨ Enhancement🧪 Tests🕐 40+ Minutes
AI Description
• Cache and share config reads per extension context while returning independent copies.
• Invalidate on settings or locale changes, and retry migrations whose writes fail.
• Read fresh settings for new conversations and context-menu prompts to avoid stale choices.
The following are alternative approaches to this PR:
1. Central background config service
➕ One authoritative cache could reduce cross-context staleness.
➖ Requires messaging for config access and a broader change to extension-context lifecycle handling.
Recommendation: Keep the per-context cache and targeted fresh reads for this PR: they reduce routine storage reads without introducing a new service. Review the explicit fresh-read call sites carefully, since other time-sensitive callers could otherwise observe a completed write only after its storage event arrives.

index.mjsCache resolved config with guarded publication and invalidation+139/-27
Cache resolved config with guarded publication and invalidation
• Shares ordinary in-flight reads, supports cache-bypassing fresh reads, and deep-copies every result. Storage and locale events invalidate the cache; generation and sequence checks prevent stale reads from publishing, while failed migration writes remain retryable.
index.jsxUse fresh settings for selection and context-menu actions+18/-5
Use fresh settings for selection and context-menu actions
• Reads storage directly when a selection starts a session or a context-menu action builds a prompt. The context-menu path uses the same fresh config for prompt language and session settings.
browser-shim.mjsModel storage events and delayed delivery+111/-2
Model storage events and delayed delivery
• Adds area-wide and local storage-change events, locale event hooks, and controls for deferring and flushing storage events. The shim can also report unchanged written keys to model Firefox behavior.
1. Three new tests exceed the line limit✓ Resolved
Description
Three newly added test declarations exceed 100 characters: the websocket endpoint-change test, the
subrequest snapshot test, and the wrapper read-failure test. These long physical lines occur at the
newly added test declarations and make the changed source inconsistent with the repository's
100-character limit.
+test('websocket conversation requests observe endpoint changes before their storage event', async (t) => {
Evidence
The changed test declarations at the three cited locations are newly added non-comment lines longer
than 100 characters, violating the source line length requirement.

3. New page cards can use the previous model✓ Resolved
Description
mountComponent(), prepareForStaticCard(), registerPortListener(), the ChatGPT Web request
helper, and the OPEN_CHAT_WINDOW handler use ordinary getUserConfig() reads that can return
cached settings rather than completed writes from another context. Before the storage event reaches
each context, newly mounted cards and their sessions can use previous model or site-adapter
settings, requests can use previous provider settings, and the window action can follow the previous
creation preference; a later event does not replace an already-created session.
+ if (userConfigCache) return cloneDeep(userConfigCache)
Evidence
The cached return allows ordinary reads to remain stale until a cross-context storage event
invalidates them. The static-card path reads settings before site matching, and mounting reads them
before constructing a session; the port listener passes its read to the API executor, the ChatGPT
Web helper separately reads settings for its request URL, and the window handler branches directly
on its read preference.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description

4. Menu prompts are handed a config they ignore✓ Resolved
Description
menuItem.genPrompt(userConfig) passes the fresh config, but every genPrompt in
menu-tools/index.mjs is declared async () => ... and takes no parameters, so the argument is
dropped. Together with the new comment, this tells a later reader that menu prompts are built from
the fresh config passed in. That reader could then add a config-dependent menu prompt that reads the
cache and assume it gets the fresh values.

5. Preferred-language rule now has two copies✓ Resolved
Description
The context-menu handler hand-copies the 'auto' ? userLanguage : preferredLanguage rule instead of
using getPreferredLanguageKey() from src/config/index.mjs. Any later change to that rule (new
sentinels, fallback for invalid keys) will update the helper but not this copy, so context-menu
prompts would silently resolve a different language than selection tools.
getPreferredLanguageKey holds the same rule but always reads through getUserConfig(), so the PR
copied it instead of letting it accept an existing config.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

Reviewed changes
Per-context config cache (src/config/index.mjs) — memoizes getUserConfig() with a generation guard (invalidation races) and a sequence guard (out-of-order reads), a fresh bypass, and cloneDeep per caller.
Retryable migrations — readAndMigrateUserConfig returns { config, persisted }; a failed migration write/remove is never cached and retries on the next read.
Invalidation hooks — area-wide storage.onChanged filtered by hasConfigStorageChange, a languagechange listener, and an explicit invalidation inside setUserConfig.
Shared non-config key list (src/config/storage-keys.mjs, src/hooks/config-storage-listener.mjs) — new NON_CONFIG_STORAGE_KEYS/hasConfigStorageChange, replacing the literal 'sessions' checks.
Fresh reads for user gestures — selection toolbar and context-menu prompt (src/content-script/index.jsx), and default session start (src/services/local-session.mjs) now pass fresh: true; formatLanguageForPrompt is exported so the prompt reuses that snapshot.
Tests — the browser shim now models both storage events, deferred delivery, Firefox's unchanged-key reporting, and locale events; new cache/cross-context/invalidation suites.
ℹ️ Several callers still read the cached config
The cache means a read can return another context's pre-write config until its storage.onChanged event arrives. The human-gesture session starts are covered, but mountComponent/static cards (src/content-script/index.jsx:46), registerPortListener (src/services/wrappers.mjs:218), the ChatGPT-web request helper (src/services/apis/chatgpt-web.mjs:15), and the OPEN_CHAT_WINDOW handler (src/background/index.mjs:659) still use the cached read. This looks like a deliberate tradeoff already documented in the getUserConfig JSDoc, and forcing fresh on the per-request paths would reintroduce exactly the storage read this PR removes — flagging only so the decision is explicit.
Technical details
# Remaining non-fresh callers## Affected sites-`src/content-script/index.jsx:46` — `mountComponent` builds a session from the cached `modelName`/`apiMode`.
-`src/services/wrappers.mjs:218` — `registerPortListener` reads config once per message; feeds session defaults and the executor.
-`src/services/apis/chatgpt-web.mjs:15` — `request()` reads `customChatGptWebApiUrl` from cache.
-`src/background/index.mjs:659` — `OPEN_CHAT_WINDOW` branches on `alwaysCreateNewConversationWindow` from cache.
## Open questions for the human- Are these paths intended to remain cached (the event latency is normally sub-millisecond), or should any opt into `fresh`? A blanket `fresh` on the request paths would remove the optimization for the common case.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues remain.
Summary
Adds a separate settings cache in each extension context. Concurrent ordinary reads share storage work, while each caller receives an independent deep copy.
Repeated settings reads reuse a cached copy until settings change.
Settings changes take effect when users start key actions.
A ChatGPT Web generation keeps one settings snapshot through cleanup.
The earlier unnumbered finding about old provider settings is addressed: registerPortListener now reads with { fresh: true } before calling the provider.

Fresh reads at action and request boundaries — the cached callers flagged in the prior review now pass fresh: true: mountComponent, createSelectionTools, right-click CREATE_CHAT, prepareForStaticCard (src/content-script/index.jsx), OPEN_CHAT_WINDOW (src/background/index.mjs), initDefaultSession (src/services/local-session.mjs), registerPortListener (src/services/wrappers.mjs), and the ChatGPT-web helpers (src/services/apis/chatgpt-web.mjs).
Language helpers accept a snapshot — getPreferredLanguageKey/getPreferredLanguage now take an optional config, and the context-menu prompt resolves through the helper instead of a hand-copied auto/userLanguage rule, closing the prior review thread.
Selection-tool config threading — createGenPrompt accepts (selection, userConfig); the right-click path passes its fresh snapshot, the floating toolbar falls back to a fresh read.
Tests — new ChatGPT-web endpoint-freshness suite with a js-sha3 loader hook, port-listener freshness, selection-tool language tests, and a shim change that preserves pending deferred storage events.

The 896c064 commit lands as a clean follow-up to the 2ce1c92 review, addressing both open bot findings and the remaining performance note. Reviewed the incremental delta plus the full PR context; targeted suites pass (56/56).
Retired stale cache on a failed migration — readAndCache now calls invalidateUserConfigCache() when a migration write could not be persisted, so ordinary callers retry storage instead of falling back to a cached pre-migration config or letting an older in-flight read repopulate it.
Threaded the config snapshot through the ChatGPT-web helpers — request, getModels, getRequirements, isNeedWebsocket, registerWebsocket, and sendWebsocketConversation accept an optional config, and generateAnswersWithChatgptWebApi reads fresh once and passes that same snapshot to each, removing the per-request fresh reads the prior review flagged.
Wired the port-listener snapshot into generation — the content-script registerPortListener callback now forwards its fresh config to generateAnswersWithChatgptWebApi.
Kept port-listener config-read failures contained — the config read moved inside the executor's try, with a t translator fallback and a single handlePortError call gated on isLatestSessionRequest().
Added regression tests — unpersisted-migration race cases, ChatGPT-web snapshot reuse (zero storage reads), and a port-listener config-read failure.
The 2ce1c92 open thread on the ChatGPT-web fresh reads is resolved by the threading above.
Pass existing config to direct ChatGPT API fallback
src/services/apis/chatgpt-web.mjs:254
The direct background ChatGPT path still calls generateAnswersWithChatgptWebApi without the fresh config already supplied to executeApi (src/background/index.mjs:549). This fallback therefore performs a second storage read and can mix session/model fields from the first snapshot with endpoint settings from a later snapshot. Pass the existing background snapshot here, as the content-script caller now does.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed the 775f957 delta against the prior 20c8705 review plus the full PR context; the full unit suite (1148 pass), targeted suites, eslint, and prettier all pass.
Rebuilt menus read fresh settings — refreshMenu now reads getUserConfig({ fresh: true }) and resolves its language through getPreferredLanguageKey(config), so the hideContextMenu toggle takes effect before the background's own storage.onChanged invalidation lands; the REFRESH_MENU handler awaits the rebuild and the startup call observes the returned promise.
Cleanup paths reuse the generation snapshot — setConversationProperty, deleteConversation, and stopWebsocketConversation take an optional config, and generateAnswersWithChatgptWebApi threads its snapshot into the abort/stop and auto-clean delete paths, so an endpoint change mid-generation cannot redirect cleanup to a different server (Copilot's high-severity 20c8705 finding).
Added regression coverage — new menus.test.mjs (with a menu-loader-hooks.mjs stub) asserts the committed hide setting is observed before its storage event arrives; chatgpt-web-config.test.mjs gains a cleanup test asserting the generation endpoint is preserved with zero storage reads.
Use fresh config for all conversation window entry points
src/background/index.mjs:659
This fresh read only covers the OPEN_CHAT_WINDOW message path. Context-menu and keyboard-command actions invoke menuConfig.openConversationWindow.action(true) directly, and that path still calls cached getUserConfig() (src/content-script/menu-tools/index.mjs:40). A completed settings write whose storage event is delayed can therefore still use the old alwaysCreateNewConversationWindow value. Route both entry points through one fresh-config implementation or pass a fresh snapshot into the action.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed the 12357eb delta against the prior 775f957 approval plus the full PR context. The commit is a targeted follow-up to Copilot's last finding and is consistent with the fresh-read design the earlier commits established.
Routed the menu/shortcut window entry point through a fresh read — openConversationWindow.action(true) (src/content-script/menu-tools/index.mjs:40) now calls getUserConfig({ fresh: true }), so the alwaysCreateNewConversationWindow preference committed by a popup updateConfig is observed before the background's storage.onChanged invalidation arrives. This is the same fix 775f957 applied to OPEN_CHAT_WINDOW, and it closes the shared context-menu + keyboard-command path that was still reading the cache.
Added a regression test — the new openConversationWindow block in tests/unit/content-script/menu-tools.test.mjs warms the cache with the old preference, defers storage events, commits the new value, then asserts windows.create is called once and windows.update not at all. It fails against the cached read and passes with the fresh read.
Verified locally at 12357eb: node --import ./tests/setup/browser-shim.mjs --test tests/unit/content-script/menu-tools.test.mjs → 11 pass / 0 fail (includes the new case); eslint and prettier --check clean on both changed files.
Regarding the docstring coverage warning: the cache API and invalidation behavior are documented. Adding docstrings across all touched functions solely to meet this coverage threshold is outside this change.

Foreground Bing sends read fresh settings — ConversationCard's foreground dispatch resolves bingAccessToken through getUserConfig({ fresh: true }) (src/components/ConversationCard/index.jsx:387), so a token refreshed by another context is observed before its storage event arrives. This addresses the Copilot finding raised against ef19e1a.
Escape and Go Back read fresh settings — the Escape-to-close handler (src/components/ConversationCard/index.jsx:448) and the notification's Go Back button (src/components/WebJumpBackNotification/index.jsx:62) now pass fresh: true, keeping the user-gesture boundaries consistent with the rest of the PR.
Regression coverage — new delayed-storage-event tests for the foreground token, the Escape preference, and the Go Back target tab, plus a web-jump-back-loader-hooks.mjs module stub and a getPreferredLanguageKey(config) snapshot test in language-config.
Test titles tightened — three test names in the ChatGPT-web/wrappers suites were shortened; no behavior change.
Validation for 530c876: loaded Chromium and Firefox extensions reflect settings changes in open panels, new conversations, and selection tools. Chromium also verifies both Escape preference states and activation of the updated Go Back target tab.
The foreground Bing token, Escape preference, and Go Back target each have a component regression test that completes a write in another configuration context while delaying storage notifications. Error-path tests verify that failed reads do not close the conversation or start navigation, and that Escape and Go Back recover on retry. Go Back also handles activation failures. The full suite passes 1,154 tests.
Cache config per context and share concurrent reads. Return independent
deep copies with cloneDeep for older Safari, invalidate on settings and
locale changes, and exclude conversation history writes.
Read fresh settings at action and request boundaries, and pass the same
snapshot through ChatGPT Web requests and cleanup. Prevent older reads
from replacing newer cache entries, and retry failed migrations. Keep
Escape and Go Back failures contained so the actions remain retryable.
Keep useConfig's existing storage.local.onChanged listener unchanged;
its browser compatibility remains a separate follow-up.

Reviewed the 530c876 delta (the branch was force-pushed to a single commit) against the prior 99bd956 pullfrog approval plus the full PR context. The increment adds failure containment to the two newly-fresh user-gesture handlers plus retry coverage; the full unit suite passes (1154/1154) and eslint/prettier are clean on the touched files.
Escape handler contains read failures — ConversationCard's Escape-to-close getUserConfig({ fresh: true }) read is now wrapped in try/catch (src/components/ConversationCard/index.jsx:448). A rejected read logs a warning and returns without closing, leaving the listener attached so a later Escape retries; previously a rejection escaped as an unhandled promise rejection.
Go Back contains read and activation failures — the notification's Go Back button now awaits Browser.runtime.sendMessage inside a try/catch (src/components/WebJumpBackNotification/index.jsx:59), so a failed config read or a failed ACTIVATE_URL activation logs a warning and leaves the button clickable for a retry.
Retry regression coverage — conversation-card-lifecycle.test.mjs gains Escape read failures keep the conversation open and allow retry, and web-jump-back-notification.test.mjs gains Go Back handles read and activation failures and allows retry (with a mountNotification helper). Both assert the warning, the unchanged UI state, and a successful retry.
