ClassFinder

Chico State is a large campus with many buildings and classrooms which can make finding classes difficult especially with students that are unfamiliar with the campus. While existing navigation tools help students locate buildings, they do not always provide enough information to find specific classrooms. Our project ClassFinder aims to address this problem by creating a website to locate buildings, classrooms, and receive directions to their destinations.

User-Centered Design Artifacts

Phase I: Analyzing Users, Competitors, and Initial Designs

Executive Summary

Initial research and design focused on improving how Chico State students, faculty, and staff locate buildings and classrooms across campus.

  • Competitive analysis revealed limitations in existing campus navigation tools:

    • Google Maps: Reliable outdoor navigation but no indoor navigation
    • Chico State Campus Map: Easy access to building locations but lacks classroom directions
    • Chico Hall Floor Plan: Indoor building layouts but limited accessibility and convenience
  • Heuristic evaluations identified strengths in interface design but also areas for improvement:

    • Limited customization/shortcuts for saving locations
    • Insufficient help and documentation for new users
    • Lack of indoor navigation for locating specific classrooms
  • Personas and scenarios highlight navigation needs for different campus users:

    • Students: Easier navigation to classrooms
    • Professors: Better access to classroom locations and nearby facilities
    • Campus staff: Faster navigation between buildings and rooms
  • Sketches illustrate initial design concepts:

    • Classroom and building search through a website
    • Interactive campus map with location-based directions
    • Indoor floor plans displaying hallways and classroom numbers
    • Saved locations for quick access to buildings
