fix(web): versus scoreboard shows the product's own rating at one decimal - #1478
Refs #1470 (part 1; the headline-rating decision is open on the issue)
What
On /compare/apple-iphone-15-128gb-vs-apple-iphone-16-128gb the scoreboard said 5.00 vs 4.98 and named a leader on a 0.02 gap, while the matrix on the same page showed 5.0 vs 5.0.
Versus scoreboard: its base score is now the product's stored buyer rating (userScore5). On the usual path that is the number the matrix, product cards, compare and watchlist show. It used to be the leaderboard composite (combinedScore5). A model with no buyer rating yet keeps its composite (expert or criteria), so it never reads 0.0. Persona weights still blend in the five criteria as before.
One decimal: scores, the verdict text, the Markdown/CSV export and the tie rule (isVersusScoreTie) all read at one decimal, like the matrix. 5.0 against 5.0 is a tie, so the price tiebreak no longer names a winner from a difference the page rounds away.
Gap and exports: the score gap is taken from the scores as shown (4.46 vs 4.34 reads 4.5 vs 4.3, gap 0.2), and the leading note and the JSON export read at one decimal too.
Not changed: the home and compare battle cards keep the composite, since battles are ranked, paired and given their gap by it. The public API /api/v1/rate/versus keeps its two-decimal is_tie; it is a contract for API clients, so changing it is a separate call.
Not in this PR (decision needed)
The product page headline is the Bayesian estimate (#1144, review trust model: k=3, μ=4.2), so iPhone 16 128GB reads 4.8 there and 5.0 everywhere else. display-truth.test pins that choice deliberately: weak 5-star reviews must not read as 5.0. One number everywhere means either:
the Bayesian estimate everywhere. Lists only have the stored rating and count, so this needs the estimate (or the weight sum) stored on master_products by the refresh function, a DOS-Me step. My recommendation is 2.
Tests
core-rate-architecture (tie at one decimal, persona verdicts on userScore5, a model with no buyer rating, the gap from shown scores) and locale-format (verdict 4.9 / 4,9) are updated.
Fresh-context review and one Codex round: their findings (no-buyer-rating model at 0.0, battle-card mismatch, two-decimal note and JSON, gap from raw scores) are fixed in the second commit.
#1470 (part): the versus scoreboard showed 4.98 and 5.00 while the
comparison matrix on the same page showed 5.0 and 5.0, and called a leader
on a 0.02 gap.
- The versus scoreboard's base score is the product's stored buyer rating
(userScore5), the one the matrix, cards and compare show, instead of the
leaderboard composite; persona weights still blend in the criteria.
- Scores, the verdict and the tie read at one decimal, like the matrix:
5.0 against 5.0 is a tie.
- Home and compare battle cards show that rating at one decimal.
The product page's headline stays the Bayesian estimate (#1144); whether
lists and versus should show it too is open on #1470.

The versus scoreboard now bases weighted scores on positive buyer ratings, falls back to composite scores when absent, and uses one-decimal precision for score gaps, ties, verdicts, displays, and exports.

Buyer rating and score comparisons apps/web/src/components/compare/VersusInteractiveScoreboard.tsx, apps/web/src/lib/versus-verdict.ts, apps/web/src/server/rate/__tests__/core-rate-architecture.test.ts
Weighted scores use a positive userScore5, with combinedScore5 as the fallback. Score gaps and tie comparisons use one-decimal precision. Tests cover rounded ties, expert-only scoring, and displayed gaps.

Review of #1478: a model with no buyer rating falls back to its composite
instead of scoring 0; the gap, the leading note and the JSON export read
at one decimal, from the scores as shown; battle cards go back to the
composite they are ranked and paired by.

Cover the one-decimal tie boundary at 4.94 versus 4.96.
The current tie assertions cannot detect a tie check that compares a rounded difference with zero. For (5, 4.96) and (4.98, 5), the rounded difference is 0.0, and the expected result is a tie, so both assertions pass under that faulty implementation. The (4.94, 4.96) pair separates the correct and faulty implementations. Its rounded difference is 0.0, but the independently rounded scores are 4.9 and 5.0, so the tie check must return false. Adding this case makes the tie rule fail under the faulty implementation.
The assertion tests isVersusScoreTie directly, so it does not depend on how the scoreboard formats delta.
assert.equal(isVersusScoreTie(5, 4.96), true, 'equal at one decimal');
assert.equal(isVersusScoreTie(4.98, 5), true, '5.0 against 5.0');
+ assert.equal(isVersusScoreTie(4.94, 4.96), false, 'rounds to different tenths');
assert.equal(isVersusScoreTie(4.9, 4.8), false);

Make the camA fixture's userScore5 differ from combinedScore5.
The versus default persona reads userScore5. In both camA and camB, userScore5 equals combinedScore5. A regression to the composite score would return the same values, so the default-score assertion would still pass. Setting camA's userScore5 to 4.7 makes that assertion sensitive to the score source. Model A still wins the default comparison (4.7 > 4.6), so the winner assertion is unchanged.

Show the unrated label instead of a zero star on homepage battle cards.
The homepage battle card formats userScore5 for both products without a guard. An unrated product has userScore5 = 0, so the card can show ★ 0.0 for it. Other unrated displays in this repository show the unratedShort label when the score is not positive, for example CompareWorkspace.tsx:1336 and LeaderboardExplorer.tsx:612.
The path is reachable. The homepage calls getMasterProducts({ categorySlug: 'all', limit: 24 }), which sets no rating filter. The fallback query and the search_master_products RPC keep unrated published products. The popular-battle builder ranks by combinedScore5 for the 'combined' criterion and excludes only activeScore5 <= 0. A product with no buyer rating but an expert score has a positive combinedScore5, so it can appear in a battle.
Before this change, the card showed combinedScore5. The zero-star display starts with this change.
Render the unrated label when userScore5 is not positive, for both productA (page.tsx:659-661) and productB (page.tsx:675-677). Use the same condition as CompareWorkspace.tsx. Confirm that the unratedShort key exists in the namespace this component loads before using it.

Add a tie check for final scores that round to the same tenth through computeVersusWeightedResult.
computeVersusWeightedResult sets tie with isVersusScoreTie(finalA, finalB). The current tie assertion compares an item with an identical copy of itself, so exact and one-decimal comparison give the same result. The shown-gap and expert-only cases check delta and finalA, not tie. As written, this test file would still pass if the comparison changed to exact equality.
Add a case with unequal final scores that round to the same tenth:
Suggested test
+ // Unequal final scores that round to the same tenth are a tie.+ const roundedTie = computeVersusWeightedResult(+ { ...scoreItemA, userScore5: 0, combinedScore5: 4.94 },+ { ...scoreItemB, userScore5: 0, combinedScore5: 4.93 },+ { screen: 20, performance: 20, camera: 20, battery: 20, value: 20 },+ 'default'+ );+ assert.notEqual(roundedTie.finalA, roundedTie.finalB);+ assert.equal(roundedTie.finalA.toFixed(1), roundedTie.finalB.toFixed(1));+ assert.equal(roundedTie.tie, true);
Adjust the fixture values if the two final scores do not differ and round to the same tenth. The precondition assertions check that before the tie assertion runs.

Add a case to the `computeVersusWeightedResult` tests using unequal inputs that
produce distinct `finalA` and `finalB` values rounding to the same tenth. Assert
those preconditions and that `tie` is true, so the test verifies the one-decimal
tie behavior rather than exact equality.
