fix: v15 regressions found in side-by-side QA - #3364
These fixes come from a manual side-by-side QA pass. It compared examples/vite on v14 + stream-chat v9 against v15 + stream-chat v10. Each commit fixes one regression and adds a test that fails without the fix. The stream-chat-js half is GetStream/stream-chat-js#1965 (same ticket).
🛠 Implementation details
fix(Message): a retry that fails again already marks the message as failed, but its rejection reached the Resend action and the bounce prompt unhandled. The rejection is now caught.
fix(ChannelList):InfiniteScrollWithComponents keyed rows by item.id. A channel's id is unique only within its type, so channels like team:general and livestream:general shared a key and React rendered ghost rows when the list reordered. In QA it rendered 9 rows for 7 channels. Rows are now keyed by paginator.getItemId(item) (the cid for channels) and fall back to id.
fix(MessageActions): the actions menu traps focus. On close it returns focus to its toggle, which a hover-only toggle no longer renders, so focus fell to <body> and the first keystrokes after Edit Message were lost. DialogAnchor now releases the trap while closing. Edit and Quote focus the composer next to the message on the next frame: the thread's composer for a reply, found from the menu anchor. For Edit, the caret goes after the text. If the menu's channel or thread shows no composer textarea (while recording audio, for example), focus stays where it is. It no longer jumps to another channel's composer.
fix(UnreadMessagesNotification): the "N unread" button always pointed up. It now points down when every loaded message is older than lastReadAt. That happens after jumping back in history while new messages arrive.
fix(MessageList):useScrollLocationLogic started its closeToBottom ref false while isMessageListScrolledToBottom started true, and onScroll flips the state only when the ref changes. So the first scroll up after opening a list went undetected: no new-messages notification, no scroll-to-latest button, and new messages were marked read unseen. The ref now starts true.
fix(UnreadMessagesNotification) (follow-up):useUnreadMessagesNotification now reports whether the unread separator is below the viewport, and MessageList passes it as the new optional unreadIsBelow prop. Without the prop, the component falls back to the loaded-window check. VirtualizedMessageList passes it too: its hook reports which side of the rendered range the unread messages are on (review follow-up).
test(InfiniteScrollWithComponents) (review follow-up): the duplicate-key assertion expected three console.error arguments where React passes two, so it could never fail. It now matches the message only.
fix(ChannelList) (QA round 2): a live event can route a channel into a list that was never queried, e.g. a message makes a channel unread before the "Unread" list was ever shown. That defines items without loading a page, and ChannelList ran its first query only while items === undefined: opening the list sent no request and showed only the event-routed channels. The first load is now gated on paginator.hasLoadedPage. A list seeded with an empty setItems page still never queries. Needs the stream-chat release with fix(pagination): count a page set with setItems as loaded, even when empty stream-chat-js#1995 (adds hasLoadedPage); until then yarn types fails on that getter.
fix(examples): the vite example's sideloaded section now skips channels that the ChannelList already shows.
Checks: yarn lint, yarn types, yarn build and yarn test (3311 passed). These were verified in the vite example against a local build of the stream-chat-js PR:
Edit focuses the composer with the caret at the end.
After hiding and re-showing every channel there are no duplicate or ghost rows and no duplicate-key warnings.
The first scroll up after opening a channel now shows the new-messages pill and the scroll-to-latest button, and no longer marks new messages read.
🎨 UI Changes
The composer is focused after Edit Message, as in v14.
The unread notification's arrow points toward the unread messages.
No more ghost or duplicate channel rows.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Prevented channels already shown in the paginated list from appearing again in the sideloaded section.
Unread-message notifications now indicate whether unread messages are above or below the visible area.
Fixed scroll tracking when moving away from the bottom of a message list, improving new-message handling.
Prevented retry failures from causing unhandled errors.
Fixed list rendering when items share an ID and improved item ordering.
Fixed channel lists failing to request their initial page in certain live-update scenarios.
Improvements
Editing or quoting a message now focuses the relevant composer. Editing places the cursor at the end of the text.
Focus is no longer contained by a dialog while it closes.
A retry that fails again marks the message failed, which is how it reports the failure, but
the rejection reached the Resend action and the bounce prompt unhandled.
Rows were keyed by item.id. A channel's id is unique only within its type, so channels such
as team:general and livestream:general shared a key and the list rendered ghost rows on
reorder. Rows are now keyed by paginator.getItemId (the cid for channels), falling back to
id.
The actions menu traps focus and, when it closes, returns focus to its toggle, which a
hover-only toggle no longer renders, so focus fell to the body and typing after Edit was
lost. A closing dialog now releases the trap, and Edit and Quote focus the composer next to
the message (the thread's for a reply) on the next frame, with the caret at the end for
Edit.
…ssages
The notification always pointed up. After jumping back in history, a message that arrives
is newer than everything loaded, so the arrow now points down when every loaded message is
older than the last read one.
With no page loaded, a channel paginator's logical interval can be the active one, so the
sideloaded section listed the same channels as the ChannelList below it.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This PR updates channel navigation filtering, dialog focus containment, paginator row identity, retry rejection handling, message-action composer focus, channel-list first-page querying, and message-list unread direction and scroll state. It also adds tests for these changes.
Sideloaded head and tail channels are excluded when their cids already appear in the paginator’s listed items.
Dialog focus containment
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Release focus containment during closing src/components/Dialog/service/DialogAnchor.tsx
The focus scope stops containing focus during the dialog’s closing transition.
Paginator item identity
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Use paginator item identity for row keys src/components/InfiniteScrollPaginator/InfiniteScrollWithComponents.tsx, src/components/InfiniteScrollPaginator/__tests__/InfiniteScrollWithComponents.test.tsx
The optional getItemId callback supplies row keys when it returns a non-nullish value. Tests cover custom identity, reordered items with duplicate ids, and rendering without the callback.
Message and bounce-context retry handlers catch rejected promises. A test verifies that the message retry callback resolves to undefined after rejection.
Message-action composer focus
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Locate and focus the associated composer src/components/MessageActions/MessageActions.defaults.tsx, src/components/MessageActions/__tests__/MessageActions.test.tsx
Quote and Edit focus the composer associated with the message context. Focus occurs on the next animation frame; Edit also moves the caret to the end of the composed text. Tests cover composer focus for edit and thread quote actions, and the case where no matching composer is present.
Message-list unread and scroll behavior
Layer / File(s)

Track and display unread direction src/components/MessageList/hooks/MessageList/useUnreadMessagesNotification.ts, src/components/MessageList/hooks/VirtualizedMessageList/useUnreadMessagesNotificationVirtualized.ts, src/components/MessageList/UnreadMessagesNotification.tsx, src/components/MessageList/MessageList.tsx, src/components/MessageList/VirtualizedMessageList.tsx, src/components/MessageList/__tests__/UnreadMessagesNotification.test.tsx, src/components/MessageList/hooks/__tests__/useUnreadMessagesNotification.test.tsx, src/components/MessageList/hooks/__tests__/useUnreadMessagesNotificationVirtualized.test.tsx
The hooks report unread direction, and the notification selects its arrow using that value or timestamp comparisons. The non-virtualized hook scopes separator lookup to its list. Tests cover direction and list-scoped observation.
Initialize scroll state at the bottom src/components/MessageList/hooks/MessageList/useScrollLocationLogic.tsx, src/components/MessageList/hooks/__tests__/useScrollLocationLogic.test.tsx
The scroll-location logic starts with closeToBottom set to true. A regression test checks that upward scrolling changes the reported state.
Channel-list first-page loading
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Query when no page has loaded src/components/ChannelList/ChannelList.tsx, src/components/ChannelList/__tests__/ChannelList.test.tsx
ChannelList checks whether the paginator has loaded a page before deciding to query. Tests cover live events that add or remove items before the first page query, and a paginator with a seeded page.
GetStream/stream-chat-react#3381: Both PRs change the ChannelList first-page query lifecycle under different paginator-state conditions.
Merge Risk: High · up to 2e7d2
The new ChannelList first-load check relies on a stream-chat feature that the declared dependency version does not provide, so the library build currently fails. Update the stream-chat dependency and peer range before merging. Two smaller issues also remain: the unread arrow in virtualized lists can point the wrong way when date separators are shown, and one regression test can pass without detecting an unwanted query.

Explanation
The title "fix: v15 regressions found in side-by-side QA" is a conventional-commit style title that names the main theme: fixing regressions in v15. The changeset covers many separate fixes (Message retry rejection, ChannelList row keys and first-page query, MessageActions focus, UnreadMessagesNotification arrow direction, MessageList scroll ref, and the Vite sideloaded filter). The title is broad but accurately describes the PR's purpose and does not describe anything absent from the changes. It does not name a single specific change, which is acceptable because the title need not cover every detail.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template in part. It has a Goal section that explains the QA origin and the regression fixes, an Implementation details section that lists each fix with its reasoning, and a UI Changes section with three bullets. The UI Changes section does not include screenshots, which the template asks for. The description also includes a ticket link, test results, and dependency notes that help reviewers. The Goal section explains why the change was made. The missing screenshots are a non-critical gap, so the description is mostly complete.

…y its message
React logs this warning with two arguments, and the assertion expected three, so it passed
even when the warning was logged. It now checks the first argument of every console.error
call.
When the menu's channel or thread showed no composer textarea (while recording audio, say),
Edit and Quote fell back to the first composer in the page, which could be another channel's.
The fallback now runs only for a menu outside any channel or thread. The thread quote test
now renders its composer inside the thread, as the app does.
…messages are
The virtualized list did not pass unreadIsBelow, so the notification fell back to the loaded
window, which reaches past the rendered range: with showUnreadNotificationAlways it could point
up at unread messages below. The hook now returns which side the rendered range puts them.
The fixture renders a stateless <div>, so it checks text order and duplicate-key warnings but not component-instance identity. ChannelList uses this paginator with ChannelListItem, which owns per-row state such as unreadCount. A non-identity key can attach that state to the wrong channel after reordering.

Exclude date separators from the direction calculation.
When withDateSeparator is enabled, makeItemsRenderedHandler can pass a date separator as the last rendered item. That item has no created_at, so the comparison uses 0. The notification then points down even when the rendered messages and first unread message are above it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Filter non-message items before calculating the rendered time range, and cover this case in the hook test.

## Description of the changes, What, Why and How?
These fixes come from a manual side-by-side QA pass. It compared the
React `examples/vite` app on stream-chat-react v14 + stream-chat v9
against v15 + this branch's v10. Each commit fixes one regression and
adds a unit test that fails without the fix.
- **Failed edit, then Resend** (`fix(messageOperations)`): `retry()`
sent a failed edit as a new message. The server rejected it as a
duplicate. The send path took that rejection for a delivered send, so
the client showed the edited text as sent while the server kept the old
text, and the rejection went unhandled. A failed edit is now sent again
through `update()`. It is recognized by `message_text_updated_at`, which
a failed send never has, so this also works after a reload.
- **Network-failed messages** (`fix(errors)`): `parseError` did not set
`status` when a request got no response. UI SDKs offer Edit and Discard
on a failed message only when `status === 0`, as v9 UIs did, so those
actions disappeared. Such errors now get `status: 0`. Only real
transport failures get it: an axios error with no response that the
caller did not cancel, or an `OfflineError`. A cancelled request and an
error thrown by an integrator's own request handler keep no status
(review follow-up).
- **Lists emptied by `channel.hidden`** (`fix(ChannelManager)`): hiding
every channel in a list drops its loaded page. When channels were shown
again, they went only into the paginator's logical intervals. A list UI
does not render those, so most channels never came back, and the example
app's sideloaded section listed them twice. On `channel.visible`, a list
with no loaded first page now re-queries it (debounced), as v9 did, but
only when the shown channel matches the list's filters (review
follow-up).
- **Thread participants** (`fix(thread)`): updates to the parent message
replaced the thread's participants with the message's
`thread_participants`, which lists only repliers. This dropped the
parent message's author. The two lists are now merged.
- **User agent** (`fix(scripts)`): local builds take the version from
`git describe`, whose tag is `v`-prefixed, so the user agent read
`stream-chat-js-vv10…`. Published builds were not affected.
Checks: `yarn lint`, `yarn types`, `yarn build` and `yarn test-unit`
(4836 passed). The suite reports 2 unhandled errors, and the base branch
reports the same 2.
The stream-chat-react half is
GetStream/stream-chat-react#3364 (same ticket).
## Changelog
- Retrying a failed message edit now sends an update instead of a
duplicate send.
- Transport failures stored on a failed message carry `status: 0`.
- Channel lists recover after every listed channel was hidden and then
shown again.
- Thread participants keep the parent message's author.
Reviewed at f75f57161; I read the code but didn't run it. The fixes look right to me, and I found no bugs. Two low notes, neither blocking:
The unread separator is looked up across the whole page, and now it also decides the arrow.useUnreadMessagesNotification takes the first .str-chat__unread-messages-separator in the document (useUnreadMessagesNotification.ts:76, :86), not the one inside its own list. That was already true for show. With this PR, unreadIsBelow comes from the same element. Example: two channels shown side by side, both with unread messages. Channel B's notification measures channel A's separator against B's scroll container, so B's arrow (and whether it shows at all) follows A. Looking the separator up inside scrollRoot (scrollRoot.getElementsByClassName(...)) keeps each list on its own separator. v14 also looked the separator up page-wide, so this isn't a regression. v15 makes it easier to hit, since ChatView can show several channels at once.
The composer lookup depends on the default class names.findComposerTextarea identifies the thread and channel by .str-chat__thread and .str-chat__channel (MessageActions.defaults.tsx:68-73). Apps can replace both classes through customClasses.thread (Thread.tsx:92) and customClasses.channel (useChannelContainerClasses.ts:16). With customClasses.thread set:
When the thread is in its own panel, Edit on a reply finds no container and falls back to a .str-chat__thread textarea, which isn't there, so nothing is focused. That's harmless.
When <Thread/> is rendered inside <Channel/>, the reply's anchor resolves to the channel. Both composers then pass the "not in a thread" check, and the first one in the DOM wins. That's usually the channel's composer, while the edit went to the thread's.
This is rare, so it's fine to leave for now. A focus() on the text composer (REACT-1456) would remove the DOM lookup altogether.
The unread notification took the first unread separator in the page, so with several lists on
screen (channels side by side) one list's notification and arrow could follow another's. It now
looks the separator up inside its own scroll container.
Fixed in d414ba9. The hook now looks the separator up inside its own scroll container, so each list's notification and arrow follow only its own separator. The new hook tests fail with the page-wide lookup.
Agreed, leaving it for REACT-1456. A focus() on the text composer replaces the DOM lookup, class names included.
…ched first
A live event can route a channel into a list that was never queried, e.g. a message makes a
channel unread before the "Unread" list was ever shown. That defines `items` without loading
a page, and `ChannelList` ran its first query only while `items === undefined`: opening the
list sent no request and showed only the event-routed channels, missing the other unread ones.
Gate the first load on `paginator.hasLoadedPage` instead. A list seeded with an empty
`setItems` page still never queries.
Needs the stream-chat release that adds `BasePaginator.hasLoadedPage`.

Wait for the debounced query before asserting that none occurred.
paginator.items already has length one before renderList, so waitFor can finish immediately. An unwanted toTailDebounced() call can therefore run after the zero-call assertion, and this regression test can pass despite a query. Flush the paginator’s debounce with controlled timers before checking queryChannels. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use a stream-chat version that provides hasLoadedPage.
The declared stream-chat version, 10.0.0-rc.31, does not provide this getter. The supplied pipeline fails with TS2339 at this line. If compilation is bypassed, the missing getter reads as undefined, so the selector can schedule another query after a successful load. Update the dependency, lockfile, and supported peer minimum to a release that provides the getter. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @src/components/ChannelList/ChannelList.tsx at line 45:
Update the stream-chat dependency and lockfile to a release that provides the
hasLoadedPage getter used by the ChannelList selector, and raise the supported
peer minimum accordingly. Verify the selected release exposes this getter so the
selector compiles and does not treat a successful load as unloaded.

🎯 Goal
These fixes come from a manual side-by-side QA pass. It compared
examples/viteon v14 + stream-chat v9 against v15 + stream-chat v10. Each commit fixes one regression and adds a test that fails without the fix. The stream-chat-js half is GetStream/stream-chat-js#1965 (same ticket).🛠 Implementation details
fix(Message): a retry that fails again already marks the message as failed, but its rejection reached the Resend action and the bounce prompt unhandled. The rejection is now caught.fix(ChannelList):InfiniteScrollWithComponentskeyed rows byitem.id. A channel'sidis unique only within its type, so channels liketeam:generalandlivestream:generalshared a key and React rendered ghost rows when the list reordered. In QA it rendered 9 rows for 7 channels. Rows are now keyed bypaginator.getItemId(item)(thecidfor channels) and fall back toid.fix(MessageActions): the actions menu traps focus. On close it returns focus to its toggle, which a hover-only toggle no longer renders, so focus fell to<body>and the first keystrokes after Edit Message were lost.DialogAnchornow releases the trap while closing. Edit and Quote focus the composer next to the message on the next frame: the thread's composer for a reply, found from the menu anchor. For Edit, the caret goes after the text. If the menu's channel or thread shows no composer textarea (while recording audio, for example), focus stays where it is. It no longer jumps to another channel's composer.fix(UnreadMessagesNotification): the "N unread" button always pointed up. It now points down when every loaded message is older thanlastReadAt. That happens after jumping back in history while new messages arrive.fix(MessageList):useScrollLocationLogicstarted itscloseToBottomreffalsewhileisMessageListScrolledToBottomstartedtrue, andonScrollflips the state only when the ref changes. So the first scroll up after opening a list went undetected: no new-messages notification, no scroll-to-latest button, and new messages were marked read unseen. The ref now startstrue.fix(UnreadMessagesNotification)(follow-up):useUnreadMessagesNotificationnow reports whether the unread separator is below the viewport, andMessageListpasses it as the new optionalunreadIsBelowprop. Without the prop, the component falls back to the loaded-window check.VirtualizedMessageListpasses it too: its hook reports which side of the rendered range the unread messages are on (review follow-up).test(InfiniteScrollWithComponents)(review follow-up): the duplicate-key assertion expected threeconsole.errorarguments where React passes two, so it could never fail. It now matches the message only.fix(ChannelList)(QA round 2): a live event can route a channel into a list that was never queried, e.g. a message makes a channel unread before the "Unread" list was ever shown. That definesitemswithout loading a page, andChannelListran its first query only whileitems === undefined: opening the list sent no request and showed only the event-routed channels. The first load is now gated onpaginator.hasLoadedPage. A list seeded with an emptysetItemspage still never queries. Needs the stream-chat release with fix(pagination): count a page set with setItems as loaded, even when empty stream-chat-js#1995 (addshasLoadedPage); until thenyarn typesfails on that getter.fix(examples): the vite example's sideloaded section now skips channels that theChannelListalready shows.Checks:
