fix!: drop unset MessageContext fields and unify message grouping props - #3386
MessageContext declared threadList, firstOfGroup, endOfGroup and groupedByUser, but no message list set them, so they were always undefined. Instead of wiring them up, this removes them. groupStyles becomes the single source of message grouping, and thread detection is useThreadContext(), which the default UI already used. The grouping props of the two lists become one consistent API.
🛠 Implementation details
threadList is removed from MessageProps and MessageContextValue. ReactionSelector.getDialogId takes only { messageId }. The SDK never passed threadList, so the ids it produces don't change. A message open in both the channel and a thread still gets two dialogs, because each list has its own dialog manager. A new test opens the reaction selector in one list and checks the other stays closed, in both directions. It fails if the two lists share a manager.
endOfGroup, firstOfGroup, groupedByUser and the str-chat__virtual-message__wrapper--* classes are removed. The default MessageUI renders the metadata on every message, and the existing .str-chat__li--top/--middle CSS hides it, so integrators can still show it with CSS. The DOM and the look are the same as before.
groupByUser replaces MessageList.noGroupByUser and VirtualizedMessageList.shouldGroupByUser. The defaults are unchanged: true and false.
getGroupStyles replaces the groupStyles function prop on both lists. It is called with one GetGroupStylesParams object: { groupByUser, maxTimeBetweenGroupedMessages, message, nextMessage, previousMessage }. The exported getGroupStyles and the useEnrichedMessages options change to match. An old positional function no longer compiles, rather than silently inverting.
getMessageGroupStyles is the group-style loop, which both lists now share. The virtualized list recomputes group styles whenever its messages change. Before, it only did when their number changed, so an edit or a reaction in the middle of a group left a stale style. A new test covers this.
Examples: the cookbook recipes and the vite example use isInThread = !!useThreadContext() and groupByUser.
Docs:ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md (sections 11, 12 and 19, and the index) and ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md (BC-048 updated, new BC-079 and BC-080).
Checks: yarn test (3432), yarn types, yarn lint, yarn build, and both examples typecheck.
🎨 UI Changes
None. Grouped messages render the same: metadata is still in the DOM and hidden by the existing CSS on top/middle items.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Message lists now support configurable grouping by user and custom group styling. Standard message lists group consecutive messages by default; virtualized lists retain their existing default behavior.
Message metadata remains visible across all positions in a message group.
Bug Fixes
Reaction selectors for the same message in separate lists now open in the correct list.
Migration
Update grouping options and callbacks to the new groupByUser and getGroupStyles APIs. Thread detection now uses thread context rather than message props; thread-related grouping context flags and CSS classes are removed.
MessageContext declared threadList, firstOfGroup, endOfGroup and
groupedByUser, but no message list set them. groupStyles is now the
single source of grouping, and thread detection is useThreadContext().
- Remove threadList from MessageProps and MessageContextValue.
ReactionSelector.getDialogId takes only { messageId }; each list's own
dialog manager keeps a message's channel and thread dialogs apart.
- Remove endOfGroup, firstOfGroup and groupedByUser from MessageContext
and the str-chat__virtual-message__wrapper--* classes. The default
MessageUI renders the metadata on every message and the
str-chat__li--top/--middle CSS hides it.
- Rename MessageList.noGroupByUser and
VirtualizedMessageList.shouldGroupByUser to groupByUser (defaults
true and false), and the groupStyles function prop to getGroupStyles,
called with one GetGroupStylesParams object.
- Share the group-style loop as getMessageGroupStyles. The virtualized
list now recomputes group styles when a message changes, not only
when the count does.
BREAKING CHANGE: MessageProps.threadList, MessageContextValue.threadList,
endOfGroup, firstOfGroup and groupedByUser are removed, as are the
str-chat__virtual-message__wrapper--* classes. noGroupByUser and
shouldGroupByUser are replaced by groupByUser, the groupStyles prop by
getGroupStyles, and getGroupStyles and useEnrichedMessages take objects
with groupByUser. See BC-079 and BC-080 in ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md.
Ticket: https://linear.app/stream/issue/REACT-1278
The cookbook recipes and the vite example read isInThread from
useThreadContext() instead of MessageContext.threadList, and the vite
example passes groupByUser to VirtualizedMessageList.
Message grouping APIs now use groupByUser and getGroupStyles. Message metadata renders for each group style, and virtual-message wrapper grouping classes are removed. Message props and context no longer expose threadList; related components, examples, tests, and migration guides use the updated contracts.

getGroupStyles now accepts an options object, and getMessageGroupStyles calculates styles keyed by message ID. The migration docs describe the new callback and options.
Both list components use groupByUser and getGroupStyles. MessageList defaults groupByUser to true; VirtualizedMessageList defaults it to false. Tests cover grouping styles and style recalculation after a message edit.
threadList is removed from message props and context. Components and examples use useThreadContext() to detect thread rendering. Reaction-selector dialog IDs now use only the message ID.

Message metadata renders without the former group-based condition. The virtual-message wrapper grouping classes and the endOfGroup, firstOfGroup, and groupedByUser context fields are removed. Migration docs describe the list-item classes and breaking changes.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title uses the conventional-commit form and names the two main changes: removing unset MessageContext fields (threadList, firstOfGroup, endOfGroup, groupedByUser) and unifying the message grouping props (groupByUser, getGroupStyles). The changeset matches both parts. The title is specific, under 72 characters, and the fix! marker correctly flags the breaking API removals.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template sections (Goal, Implementation details, UI Changes) and is detailed. It explains why threadList, firstOfGroup, endOfGroup, groupedByUser were removed, how thread detection moves to useThreadContext(), how groupByUser and getGroupStyles replace the older props, and the stale-style fix in the virtualized list. It lists the docs updated (ai-docs migration guide and breaking-change index) and the checks run (yarn test, types, lint, build, example typechecks). The UI Changes section states 'None' with a rationale, which is acceptable. Minor gap: the template asks for a Goal section and the Linear ticket is referenced, so no required information is missing.
