feat(ai-components): generated UI, with A2UI and OpenUI renderers - #3393
Bring generated UI to v15. An agent can answer with UI: the agents router puts a reply's A2UI or OpenUI block in the message's ai_ui field, and what the person does goes back as ai_ui_action. This shipped on v14 in 14.16.0 (#3388); master didn't have it yet.
🛠 Implementation details
Ports what #3388 added, on top of v15's ai-components:
src/plugins/AIComponents/GenerativeUI/: the format-agnostic AIUIHost, renderer, document, action, component definitions, view, entrance, runtime loader and error boundary, exported from stream-chat-react/ai-components.
New entries stream-chat-react/a2ui (ESM only; require throws saying so) and stream-chat-react/openui, which load @a2ui/web_core + @a2ui/react 0.15 and @openuidev/react-lang + react-ui the first time a reply shows them. These are optional ~ peers; zod moves to ^4.2.0.
vite.config.ts entries plus withoutUnreachableEntries, so each format ships only entries something can load; package.json exports and typesVersions.
ai-ui, a2ui, openui and _ai-ui-icons styles in ai-components.css; README sections for Generated UI, A2UI and OpenUI.
The renderers, generated-UI code and styles match v14 apart from the changes below. The merged AIConversation.tsx and entries.ts equal v14 plus master's own v15 changes.
Adapted to v15:
Custom fields.fromStreamMessage reads ai_ui through withCustomFields, so it finds custom.ai_ui on a stream-chat v10 message and ai_ui at the top level of a message straight from the API, as it does ai_generated. The renderer and conversation tests build replies the v10 way.
Translation keys. The A2UI ChoicePicker filter and Modal close button use the core common.search.ariaLabel and common.close.ariaLabel in place of v14's English keys. The filter's placeholder gets its own key, aiComponents.a2ui.choicePickerFilter.placeholder, which is added to the README table and ai-docs/i18n-v15-key-map.json.
Bundle checks.validate-entry-isolation now also keeps the main and ai-components entries off the A2UI and OpenUI plugins and their packages; the ESM smoke test imports a2ui.mjs and openui.mjs; the CJS one requires openui.js and checks that require of a2ui says it is ESM only.
utils.isObject reuses the generated UI's React-free isRecord rather than duplicating it.
yarn dedupe keeps one @floating-ui/react-dom; the new packages otherwise split it, which broke yarn types.
Button, Form, icons, tokens and theming needed no changes: the components and icon names the A2UI renderer uses exist unchanged on v15, and class names stay the same.
Checked locally: yarn lint, yarn types, yarn types:scripts, yarn test (319 files, 3,656 tests), yarn build (leaves keys.ts as committed), validate-cjs, validate-esm, validate-entry-isolation. In examples:build, the vite, tutorial and cookbook examples build. ai-chatbot compiles and type-checks but stops at Next.js 16.4.0's own security-advisory check. That version is unchanged from master, so master should fail the same way there.
🎨 UI Changes
None to existing components. Generated UI renders only with an AIUIHost passed to AIConversation, styled as on v14.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for displaying generated A2UI and OpenUI experiences in conversations, with streaming updates, loading states, and text fallback when a UI can’t be shown.
Added reusable UI components, app-defined components, interactive controls, and actions that can connect to tools.
Added themed styling, accessibility support, and reduced-motion behavior for generated interfaces.
Documentation
Added setup and integration guidance for generated UI, including A2UI and OpenUI renderer options.
Ports the generated UI of 14.16.0 (#3388) from release-v14 to v15: the
format-agnostic AIUIHost and its views in stream-chat-react/ai-components,
AIConversation's `ui` prop, and the lazily loaded renderers in the new
stream-chat-react/a2ui (ESM only) and stream-chat-react/openui entries,
whose packages are optional peers.
Adapted to v15:
- fromStreamMessage reads a reply's `ai_ui` under `custom`, where
stream-chat v10 keeps it, as it does `ai_generated`.
- The A2UI renderer uses v15's namespaced translation keys: the core
`common.search.ariaLabel` and `common.close.ariaLabel`, and a new
`aiComponents.a2ui.choicePickerFilter.placeholder`.
- The entry isolation check keeps the main and ai-components entries off
the renderers and their packages; the ESM and CJS smoke tests load the
new entries.
This change adds shared Generated UI support to AIConversation and introduces A2UI and OpenUI renderers. Assistant messages can provide UI documents, which a configured host routes to a matching renderer. Package exports, styles, translations, documentation, and bundle validation are also updated.

A streamed generated-UI reply can fall back to plain text instead of its UI when the final update creates the first surface, and it stays that way. Copy and share also act on empty text for UI-only replies. Fix the stale-reply check before merge; the missing accessibility test is a smaller follow-up.

The accessibility test checks roles and names by hand. No test under src/plugins/A2UI runs an axe check. AGENTS.md asks new interactive UI, such as the A2UI button, text field, choice picker and modal, to ship an axe assertion in its tests. Sibling tests in src/plugins/AIComponents/__tests__ import axe from axe-helper. Use the same import here.
If the jsdom color-contrast rule reports a false violation, disable it for this assertion as a11y.test.tsx does.

Bring the reply up to date before showsNothing checks its surfaces.
A streaming reply can keep a stale surface count. Once the complete document arrives, showsNothing can return true for that stale reply. view then returns null and unmounts A2UIReplyContent, so its layout effect never applies the new messages.
Only replyOf and the A2UIReplyContent layout effect call reply.update. While a document streams, showsNothing does not call replyOf. A2UIReplyContent creates the reply in that phase. If its messages produce no surface, the cached reply keeps zero surfaces. The complete document then reads that cached reply, and view returns null on every later render.
The reply then shows its text instead of its UI.

update skips messages it has already applied. Calling it during view can notify subscribers that are still mounted, which can cause React's "Cannot update a component while rendering" warning. If that happens, defer the notification from this path.
Add a test for a reply that streams a surface-less document and then completes with createSurface and updateComponents.
