@HHobeck, could you review this PR? It adds Mainline support for merges between main and support branches, with regression tests for both Git backends. |

Hi @arturcic , Thank you for implementing this feature. I have changed the integration test and discovered an unpredicted version. What would be your expectation for the following scenario? [TestCase(DeploymentMode.ContinuousDelivery, "0.0.4-2")]
[TestCase(DeploymentMode.ContinuousDeployment, "0.0.4")]
public void Issue4057UntaggedSupportMergeCalculatesVersion(DeploymentMode mode, string fullSemVer)
{
using var fixture = new EmptyRepositoryFixture();
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.BranchTo("support/1.x");
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.Checkout(MainBranch);
fixture.MergeNoFF("support/1.x");
var configuration = GitFlowConfigurationBuilder.New
.WithVersionStrategies(VersionStrategies.Mainline)
.WithDeploymentMode(mode)
.Build();
var version = fixture.GetVersion(configuration);
version.FullSemVer.ShouldBe(fullSemVer);

It's not easy to get into the algorithm changes. I assume some parts were generated by AI. Anyway, I have some conceptual points that we should discuss:
supportIteration.IncludedCommits = mergedCommits
.Where(item => commit.Iteration.IncludedCommits?.Contains(item) != false).ToHashSet(); |

@HHobeck, Codex helped with the implementation and the investigation below.
I also updated the algorithm guide and Mermaid flowchart merged in #5299, with five test-generated histories showing the supported merge paths and their version/counting behavior. All 200 selected documentation/support cases pass on each of managed and libgit2. The full documentation build passes, all 31 generated sources match, and all 37 Mermaid diagrams validate. A separate Codex static review found no actionable issues. |
Didn't notice that there is a special rule for main so called baseline. There should be no different from the conceptual point of view. The branch with the highest version should win? Does this make sense? |

@HHobeck, that makes sense. Codex helped implement these changes and drafted this reply on my behalf.
The existing merge-increment controls and explicit merge-message bumps still apply to the receiver's candidate before comparison. Counting stays anchored on the receiver, even when the source supplies the higher version; equal numeric versions retain the receiver's semantic source. I rebased onto current main, resolved the documentation review-record conflicts, and updated the algorithm guide, Mermaid flowchart, and generated examples. All 34,822 covering tests pass on each of managed and libgit2. The full documentation build passes, including 31 generated sources and 37 Mermaid diagrams. The follow-up Codex static reviews found no remaining actionable issues. Does this match what you meant by the highest version winning, with prerelease and counting behavior remaining specific to the receiver? |
Very well thank you very much. I was already wondering if we really need the IncludeCommits property. I will take a look and do a code review. |

Without wanting to criticize too much, I am just wondering why the creation of the MainlineIteration (the first step) behaves differently here? [Test]
public void MainlineComparesIndependentProgress()
{
using var fixture = new EmptyRepositoryFixture();
var tagSha = fixture.MakeATaggedCommit("1.0.0");
fixture.BranchTo("support/1.x");
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.Checkout("main");
var mainTip = fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.MergeNoFF("support/1.x");
}vs. [Test]
public void MainlineComparesIndependentProgress()
{
using var fixture = new EmptyRepositoryFixture();
var tagSha = fixture.MakeATaggedCommit("1.0.0");
fixture.BranchTo("feature/foo");
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.Checkout("main");
var mainTip = fixture.MakeACommit();
fixture.MergeNoFF("feature/foo");
}If there is a merge from a feature branch, the third commit on the main branch has a ParentIteration instance. Is it not possible to design the algorithm in such a way that the business logic for handling multiple main branches becomes part of the second step? |

Closes #4057
Mainline can now calculate merge commits between any two branches configured with
is-main-branch: true, including custom branch configurations and support-to-support merges.Each source history is constructed independently during traversal, using its own branch label and eligible tags. Calculation compares the source's computed numeric version with the receiver's merge candidate and keeps the higher version. Source increments are not replayed onto the receiver, including across older release lines. For example, merging a branch at
1.1.1with one at2.0.0yields core version2.0.0in either direction under the default merge-prevention settings.Receiver and source increment-prevention settings, explicit merge-message bumps, tagged-tip prevention and the shared final tag floor remain separate controls. Counting remains anchored on the receiver; equal numeric versions preserve its semantic source. Released prerelease sequences, including numeric tags, continue rather than restarting at one.
The implementation removes the main/support role checks, scoped
IncludedCommitsfiltering and validation-only traversal. Completed explicit source histories are cached within each calculation to avoid rebuilding nested round trips; inherited configurations retain their enclosing context.Regression scenarios cover arbitrary mainline pairs, merge direction, lower/higher/equal versions, independent progress, older release lines, repeated and nested merges, deleted refs, increment controls, source-specific labels, named prereleases, deployment modes, and semantic/counting metadata. The calculation guide, Mermaid flowchart and test-generated examples document the new rule.
Merges with multiple source parents remain unsupported. The existing prerelease/counting policy remains distinct from this numeric-version correction.
Local validation at
d47b8b838: 34,822 covering tests passed on each of managed and libgit2, with matching case selections and no failures or skips. The solution build, targeted formatting/Markdown checks and full documentation build passed; all 31 generated Mermaid sources match and all 37 diagrams validate. The documentation-review checker passed all 13 tests and all seven source-review records verify. Follow-up Codex static reviews found no remaining actionable issues. Local CodeRabbit review was blocked by the included-review quota; it is not reported as a passing review.
