Description

Adds sampled PostHog Cloud telemetry for the established POSIX CLI, with collection disabled (Enabled = false, no project key) and the EU region selected. The legacy argument parser and experimental new-cli do not collect telemetry.

The payload contains allowlisted option-presence flags and bounded environment labels, without raw arguments, paths, repository details, configuration values, or generated versions. CI classification reuses the existing build-agent resolver. Each event gets a fresh identity, with person profiles and GeoIP enrichment disabled in the payload.

Supports --telemetry-opt-out, DO_NOT_TRACK, and GITVERSION_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT. Before sampling, the first eligible run prints a policy link on stderr and records an empty local disclosure marker. Delivery is a single best-effort HTTP request with a 300 ms timeout, no retries, and no event queue.

Cake automatically embeds the UTC release build date as assembly metadata only for official stable tagged releases. Prereleases receive no start date. Each eligible stable build has a three-month collection window; missing or invalid metadata disables collection.

Adds usage documentation and a policy documenting the collected fields, exclusions, opt-outs, provider processing, and retention. No telemetry SDK or package dependency is added.

Activation remains a separate change

Collection stays disabled until a public PostHog project key is added and enablement is explicitly changed. Before activation, publish and verify the policy at https://gitversion.net/docs/usage/cli/telemetry-policy and verify the PostHog EU project's no-card Free plan, access controls, IP-discard, and GeoIP settings.

Related Issue

Related prior proposal: #4927 (closed). This draft does not close an issue.

Motivation and Context

Prepare a bounded, documented way to understand CLI usage while keeping collection inactive for review and project setup.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • Full managed App suite: 743 tests passed, with no failures or skips.
  • Latest focused telemetry suite: 87 cases passed on both managed and libgit2 backends, including production stderr wiring, legacy-parser exclusion, payload restrictions, opt-outs, sampling, timeout isolation, and disclosure state.
  • Cake project build passed; release-date classification smoke checks passed for 10 stable/prerelease, tag, fork, PR, and local-build cases.
  • Compiled-assembly smoke checks verified the MSBuild property-to-metadata mapping and disabled defaults.
  • Targeted formatting, Markdown lint, reference-link validation (68 files), and git diff --check passed.
  • Local CodeRabbit review of the latest cleanup completed with zero findings. The earlier stderr-wiring suggestion is covered by a regression test; policy publication is documented as a prerequisite to activation.
  • No live telemetry was sent. The Cake build reports existing NU1902/NU1903 warnings for transitive System.Security.Cryptography.Pkcs 10.0.12.

Checklist

  • My code follows the code style of this project.
  • My change requires a change to the documentation.
  • I have updated the documentation accordingly.
  • I have added tests to cover my changes.
  • Relevant tests and checks passed as described above.
  • Version-calculation algorithms are unaffected.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The CLI can display a one-time notice linking to the telemetry policy and, when a campaign is active, send sampled usage events for eligible version-calculation runs. Telemetry is disabled until a campaign is configured and enabled.
    • Opt out with --telemetry-opt-out, DO_NOT_TRACK=1, or GITVERSION_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT=true. Telemetry does not alter normal command output or exit codes.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on telemetry scope, collected information, sampling, opt-outs, campaign timing, and data handling.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI now supports optional telemetry controlled by campaign metadata, command-line and environment opt-outs, eligibility checks, and sampling. Eligible runs can display a first-run policy notice and send one bounded event. Documentation and tests cover the controls, event data, delivery behavior, and preservation of CLI output.

Changes: CLI telemetry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Campaign metadata and opt-out controls
build/build/BuildLifetime.cs, src/GitVersion.App/GitVersion.App.csproj, src/GitVersion.App/Telemetry/TelemetryCampaign.cs, src/GitVersion.App/ArgumentParser.cs, src/GitVersion.App/Arguments.cs, docs/input/docs/usage/cli/arguments.md, docs/input/docs/usage/cli/telemetry.md, src/GitVersion.App.Tests/TelemetryTests.cs
Tagged releases pass a UTC campaign-start date through assembly metadata. Campaign validation and CLI parsing define telemetry eligibility and opt-out behavior. Documentation and tests cover these controls.
Eligibility and first-run disclosure
src/GitVersion.App/GitVersionApp.cs, src/GitVersion.App/GitVersionAppModule.cs, src/GitVersion.App/Telemetry/TelemetryReporter.cs, src/GitVersion.App/Telemetry/TelemetryNotice.cs, src/GitVersion.App.Tests/TelemetryTests.cs, docs/input/docs/usage/cli/telemetry.md, docs/input/docs/usage/cli/telemetry-policy.md
The application invokes the reporter before version calculation. The reporter checks eligibility and displays the policy notice before sampling. Tests and documentation cover notice state and excluded operations.
Event payload and delivery
src/GitVersion.App/Telemetry/TelemetryReporter.cs, src/GitVersion.App.Tests/TelemetryTests.cs, docs/input/docs/usage/cli/telemetry.md, docs/input/docs/usage/cli/telemetry-policy.md
The reporter builds an event from allowlisted dimensions and sends one request with a 300 ms timeout. Tests and documentation cover payload limits, delivery, and preservation of CLI output.

After telemetry is enabled, every CI run on a fresh agent would print a disclosure line to stderr, which can fail pipelines that treat stderr output as an error. Resolve or consciously accept this before activating a campaign. Nothing is collected by default.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Avoid an unconditional stderr notice on every run on ephemeral CI agents.

Line 85 calls notice before sampling, for every eligible invocation that has no marker. Hosted CI agents and containers start with an empty LocalApplicationData, so the marker never persists. Once a campaign is enabled, every CI run of a fresh agent therefore writes this line to stderr. This happens even though only 0.01% of those runs can be sampled.

Some pipelines treat any stderr output as failure. Examples are Azure Pipelines script tasks with failOnStderr: true, and Windows PowerShell 5.1 with 2>&1 under $ErrorActionPreference = 'Stop'. A GitVersion upgrade can then fail builds that previously passed. --verbosity quiet also does not suppress the line.

Pick one fix that still meets the disclosure requirement:

  • Skip collection, and therefore the notice, for automated invocations (ci != "none" or msbuild).
  • Or route the notice through the existing logger, so it respects --verbosity and --log-file.
  • Or make the notice depend on the sampling result for automated runs, and document that change in telemetry-policy.md.

Add a test for the choice you make: an automated invocation with no marker.
