The .NET 11 RC2 tool-pack step contributes tools/any/any/DotnetToolSettings.xml once per target framework, producing NU5118. Keep the framework-independent dispatcher settings from the first framework only, retain framework-specific implementation settings, and treat NU5118 as an error when packing the tool.

Fix two docs failures as well:

  • Build development API assemblies for the LTS framework only, preventing net10 and net11 builds from writing different assemblies into the same directory concurrently.
  • Build API sidebar links from generated type-page documents, preserving namespaced routes and fixing archived 5.12 links that incorrectly pointed to /api/global/.

This is a regular fork-to-upstream PR targeting main, replacing #5384 and arturcic#1027. The branch currently includes #5383; after that PR merges, the remaining diff will contain the packaging and docs follow-up. Related to #5210.

Validation:

  • Local package inspection preserved dispatcher and implementation settings, including single-framework and portable packages. Real tool installation and launch passed with SDK 10 and RC2 on macOS arm64.
  • Full local BuildDocs passed for development 7.0 and archived 6.8/5.12, including API inventories, links, redirects and edition checks. All 58 documentation scenario tests passed.
  • Documentation review-record validation and git diff --check passed. CodeRabbit CLI reviewed the follow-up fixes with zero findings.

Earlier upstream CI validated packaging across Windows, Linux and macOS and Docker/artifact tests on amd64 and arm64. Those results predate the current head; fresh upstream CI is required for this PR.

  • Bug Fixes

    • Git output now handles UTF-8 text and mixed process output more reliably across supported environments.
    • Global tool packaging now detects duplicate platform-specific files as errors, helping prevent invalid packages.
  • Documentation

    • Development documentation builds now target the latest .NET LTS framework.
    • Documentation review metadata has been refreshed.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update development documentation builds and sidebar navigation, Git output capture and its tests, version-calculation review metadata, and global tool package settings.

Changes: Git output capture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Git output capture and validation
src/GitVersion.Git.Managed/CommandLine/GitCliExecutor.cs, src/GitVersion.Git.Managed.Tests/GitCliExecutorTests.cs, docs/version-calculation-map.json
GitCliExecutor configures UTF-8 decoding and uses a .NET 11+ stream-reading path. Tests cover output capture and process-start failures. The version-calculation map updates review metadata for the process capture and decoding changes.

Global tool packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Deduplicate packed tool settings
src/GitVersion.App/GitVersion.App.csproj
Packing treats NU5118 as an error and removes duplicate RID-dispatcher settings from non-primary frameworks while retaining RID-specific settings.

Named-type documentation sidebar

Layer / File(s) Summary
Named-type navigation
docs/input/Shared/Sidebar/_NamedType.cshtml
The sidebar adds containing assembly and namespace links, then lists matching named types by kind and name and marks the current type.

Documentation build framework

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set documentation build framework
build/docs/Utilities/VersionedDocs.cs
PrepareDevelopment sets the documentation assembly build framework to the latest configured .NET LTS version.

Change: Bug fix

Packing the tool for net11.0 alone could produce a package without its dispatcher settings file. The normal multi-framework pack is likely fine, so this is a bounded packaging edge case. Consider guarding the removal so it only applies when the net10.0 copy is also packed.

Keep dispatcher settings when the pack targets only net11.0.

This is a duplicate of the earlier review comment. The condition at Line 51 tests $(TargetFrameworks). It does not test which frameworks the pack consumes. A caller can pass -p:TargetFramework=net11.0. In that case TargetFrameworks still contains net10.0;net11.0. The ItemGroup at Line 57 then removes the only tools/any/any/DotnetToolSettings.xml. The package loses its dispatcher settings.

Add a guard so the removal runs only when the pack includes the primary framework. The TargetFramework property alone cannot show this. A reliable alternative is to remove the copy only when the primary framework's settings entry is also present in the same pack.
