Description

Publish standalone CLI archives and RID-specific tool packages with NativeAOT by default after LibGit2Sharp removal. Configuration loading, version calculation, formatting and diagnostics must execute correctly after trimming, rather than only compiling successfully.

  • Base: codex/remove-libgit2sharp-5040 at 401cb7da6d5c7bfcbfd5cab4e4014a040af81911 (Remove LibGit2Sharp and native Git payloads #5396, implementation of v7.1: remove LibGit2Sharp and native binaries #5040).
  • AOT compatibility analysis always runs for the shipped CLI graph; AOT, trimming and single-file analyzer diagnostics are build errors. PublishAot defaults to true for the CLI; libraries, test hosts and MSBuild task dependencies remain managed. Removed GitVersionManagedOnly, its symbol, conditional backend registration/reference and duplicate selector rejection. The sole managed backend and compatibility diagnostics come from v7.1: remove LibGit2Sharp and native binaries #5040.
  • Retain generated YAML contracts, finite version-format member resolution, trimming annotations and focused product regressions. Preserve arbitrary-object formatting in ordinary builds and experimental CLI shared-source boundaries.
  • Following the maintainer's review clarification, standalone/tool publication now defaults to NativeAOT. Production packaging compiles on Windows/macOS hosts and native Linux glibc/musl containers, then requires all seven RID packages and all four Linux archives before collecting artifacts. Tool payloads compile once with net10 LTS into framework-independent tools/any/<rid> paths for SDK10/SDK11. MSBuild publication explicitly uses managed dependencies. ILLink/ILCompiler warnings are errors. Temporary validation controls and diagnostic hooks remain excluded from this PR; the production packaging changes are required to build the native deliverables.

Implements the NativeAOT work for #3981. Backend-neutral development for #5210 merged through #5393.

Ready for review; merge hold remains. #5040 must actually land on main before merging this PR. #5396 is still draft. This stacked branch must be retargeted/rebased onto main after that prerequisite lands, with relevant validation and fresh human/full CodeRabbit review. Reviews and execution evidence apply only to their recorded revisions.

Native-default follow-up

Current head: 54cd5a339e40f607e7306092d77243cec519cc41. Confirmed CodeRabbit feedback is addressed by disabling credential persistence in the package-collection checkout, which needs no authenticated Git operations. Actionlint/whitespace checks pass. Local follow-up review was blocked by the included-review rate limit; a fresh full hosted review is requested. The new full matrix executes 6917c127d456dd24a3c02c75f5fa28edb6db2c82, with product inputs matching this head and only disposable full-matrix/publication-off controls plus corrected macOS/net10 stack capture differing. It remains in progress. No passing full-matrix claim is made; the earlier timeout remains unresolved pending usable diagnostics.

Previous d3 checkpoint

Latest head: d3c6c5f47b578429ccfeb29576bbda29b5197cff. Native packaging matrix policy now lives in Cake's existing SetMatrix task; the prepare workflow exports its JSON and _build.yml consumes it through a required input. All six rows and five fields match the previous YAML exactly, verified from both local output and actual GitHub output-file emission. Config build, formatting, Actionlint and fresh local four-file CodeRabbit review pass (zero findings). The preceding c3362598f uses NuGet.Packaging for package files/streams/ID, with 23 controlled/real-package checks passing; duplicate-identity guards remain. Codex-attributed replies are posted. Fresh full hosted review is requested for this head.

The full hosted matrix, execution 0c1af5d67 / product d8f2a0fda, finished with 69 successes, one failure and four skips. Windows tests pass for both frameworks. macOS/net10 hit the existing 30-minute UnitTest step limit with Core incomplete; App625, BuildAgents111 and Configuration298 passed beforehand. No hosted assertion failure is established. The temporary stack capture did not locate the Core process, so it does not identify a cause. Investigation remains open; no assertion, coverage or timeout weakening was applied. This is neither a passing full matrix nor exact-current-head evidence. The disposable branch/worktree is retained for necessary diagnostics/reruns.

Earlier checkpoints (revision-bound)

Current head: c2a66336b7a591fc3ce00299ebf4faa7da91377c (default publication in 6a14ab03c, package-metadata/image-pinning follow-up in c82fbab2c, static-member/digest-reference fix in d33234e77, build-time analyzer errors in 71792d4ba, non-root packaging/Sonar cleanup in d0fb6928b, selected-target test builds in 077f23d5e, Cake packaging in d0d6a8ac8, v7.0-to-v7.1 guide in d8f2a0fda, package identity/version guards and migration wording in c2a66336b). The maintainer comment has Codex-attributed replies describing the implementation.

  • Native container orchestration, non-root identity mapping, build metadata forwarding and collected package/archive checks now live in Cake (PackageLinux / PackageValidateCollected). GitHub Actions invokes those same targets and transfers artifacts. The glibc and musl Cake targets both completed from the local managed worktree, including external common-Git-directory mounts. Collected-artifact validation accepted the real complete set and rejected missing/duplicate tool packages and a missing Linux archive. Build/format/Actionlint/whitespace checks pass; fresh local eight-file CodeRabbit review reported zero findings.

  • Migration guidance for this milestone is a new docs/input/docs/migration/v7.0-to-v7.1.md page, linked from Upgrading. The v6-to-v7 guide is retained and points to the new page for NativeAOT distribution changes.

  • Hosted CodeRabbit completed its full review of d8f2a0fda with four findings, all confirmed and fixed in c2a66336b: package manifest structure, native executable RID matching, dispatcher/RID version consistency, and migration wording. The compiled validator passes 11 controlled cases and 12 real packages; a wrong-RID payload reproduced acceptance before the fix and rejection afterward. Cake accepts the complete set, rejects a mixed version, and passes again after restoration. Build/format/whitespace and fresh local three-file CodeRabbit review pass (zero findings). Codex-attributed replies were posted, and a fresh full hosted review was requested for c2a66336b. Sonar/dependency analysis passed on d8f2a0fda; current-head checks must finish separately.

  • The earlier full matrix completed 69 jobs successfully, with two .NET 10 total-step timeouts (Windows/macOS) and four expected skips. Windows completed 36,509 Core tests with zero failures before the next project hit the 30-minute step limit. The task unnecessarily compiled both frameworks before rebuilding selected test targets with real source paths. It now restores once and builds only each selected test target; all tests, coverage, source-path settings and timeouts are preserved. The revised Cake task passed all 38,019 .NET 11 tests locally across seven JUnit reports (zero failures/skips, 5m49s); source inputs under src/ are unchanged from d0fb6928b. The full local .NET 10 coverage run hit the unchanged large-tag calculation limit at 4.375s against 2.5s and was interrupted while Core remained active; it is not a full-suite pass. Two isolated covered runs on removal base 401cb7da6 and two on NativeAOT source d8f2a0fda/c2a66336b all pass the original limit (4 passed, 0 failed, 0 skipped). A NativeAOT-specific regression was not reproduced; calculation code and the test remain unchanged. No latest-head hosted matrix pass is claimed yet.

  • Both Linux packaging stages now default to UID/GID 1000:1000; CI uses the runner UID/GID for writable bind mounts and creates its temporary HOME before Git/.NET initialization. Both image builds/default-user checks pass. Full glibc and musl Cake Package targets pass with non-root 501:20 in an isolated local checkout, including native publication, NuGet packages and archives (same native input source at 71792d4ba; the property-pattern edit is behavior-equivalent). Formatting tests pass 168/168 per framework, plus scoped format/Actionlint/whitespace checks. Sonar analysis succeeds on d0fb6928b, clearing the root-container and redundant-Boolean findings without suppressions.

  • A temporary incompatible-code probe produced errors IL3050, IL2026 and IL3002 in ordinary net10/net11 builds, then was removed. The real CLI graph builds for both frameworks with zero warnings/errors. Scoped formatting suites pass 168/168 per framework; both new static-member cases fail before the fix. Native net10/osx-arm64 publication succeeds and formatting before{Major.Empty}after returns beforeafter, exit0. Scoped format verification and both pinned-image builds pass.

  • Full hosted CodeRabbit completed for c82fbab2c and identified the static-member defect now fixed. Fresh local review of the four-file follow-up raised one Expression.Compile concern, dismissed against .NET's interpreter fallback, successful native publication/execution and actual error-enabled builds; no suppression added. Full hosted review for 71792d4ba completed with no actionable inline findings. Local review of d0fb6928b was blocked by the included-review quota; its full hosted review completed with no actionable comments (source/covered SHA both d0fb6928b, kind reviewed, command reply explicitly finished). A fresh full review is requested for d8f2a0fda. Digest/tag findings were addressed by keeping the identical digests with versions recorded in comments.

  • Full local Cake Package succeeds on macOS ARM64: native standalone archive, native RID tool, dispatcher, managed Core and managed MSBuild packages. Archive/tool payloads contain zero DLLs; Core and MSBuild retain their managed assemblies (2 and 94 DLLs respectively in the inspected packages).

  • Default native tool packs/installs with SDK10.0.402 and SDK11 RC2. Each installed tool passes all 99 parity cases against the same-source JIT comparator, including existing-history version calculation/configuration, outputs, diagnostics and side effects. Fresh unique-version packages stamped at 6a14ab03c also passed 99/99 with each SDK against a matching comparator; c82fbab2c changes only package metadata parsing and Docker image digests.

  • A standalone net11 publication succeeds without -p:PublishAot=true; IL warnings are treated as errors. SDK11 macOS symbol generation emits module-cache/debug-info warnings, distinct from IL warnings. Build/format/Actionlint checks pass; pre-existing dependency/security and test-fixture warnings remain.

  • Both production Linux container stages build locally. Actual .NET runtime RID probes return linux-arm64 and linux-musl-arm64, matching the required canonical RID names. Windows and x64 counterparts are being validated in hosted CI.

  • Local CodeRabbit reviewed the native-default diff. Archive-upload completeness finding was confirmed and fixed. Missing Docker stages and missing per-host RID generation were dismissed against the committed Dockerfile, SDK target logic and actual generated packages. Fresh review then prompted digest pinning and direct nuspec metadata/id parsing; its request to replace the repository-pinned SDK11 RC2 with a stable SDK was declined as incompatible with global.json. Canonical-RID concern was dismissed using the real container probes. Fresh review of the final two follow-up files completed with zero findings. The full hosted review completed for c82fbab2c; follow-up coverage is described above.

  • Current full CI runs on disposable execution 0c1af5d677c6c3632728ee6d1536de7c88862f49, branch poc/ci-5391-nonroot-20261021. Product/build inputs match d8f2a0fda; only full-matrix/publication-off controls and temporary macOS/net10 stack capture differ. The prior eb4f71254 run was superseded/cancelled after the confirmed timeout repair and Cake/doc changes. Earlier native-default CI, execution 69379c9c6259519182d6c4300b48a8b191d6eaf5 / product c82fbab2c, completed 69 successes, two .NET 10 timeouts and four expected skips; its disposable branch has been removed with an exact SHA lease. No latest-head full-matrix pass is claimed while the new run is pending. The remaining disposable branch/worktree will be removed after validation; temporary controls/hooks are excluded from the PR.

Pre-default validation (revision-bound)

Revision 98adb96a04284bbfd0de06ba1e03b9e512a30a56, local macOS ARM64; SDK 11.0.100-rc.2.26504.105, native runtime/compiler 10.0.13 and 11.0.0-rc.2.26504.105.

  • Native publication with PublishAot=true succeeds for net10.0 and net11.0 without IL warnings. Ordinary evaluated builds leave PublishAot and IsAotCompatible unset.
  • Configuration: passed 298, failed 0, skipped 0 per framework. Formatting: passed 168, failed 0, skipped 0 per framework. JUnit reports confirm counts and test identities.
  • New CLI solution build succeeds. Existing dependency/security and test-fixture nullable warnings are separate from native diagnostics.
  • App: passed 625, failed 0, skipped 0 per framework. Total current-head retained tests: 2,182 passed, 0 failed, 0 skipped.
  • Exact 99-case JIT/native parity passes on each framework (198 comparisons), including version calculation on existing history, configuration/migration, formatting, machine output/diagnostics and build-agent side effects. Both executables are built from this same commit. The local retained corpus now compares removed/unknown-backend rejection diagnostics across both flavors using v7.1: remove LibGit2Sharp and native binaries #5040's shared compatibility behavior.
  • Native publish directories contain no DLL or libgit2 payloads. dotnet format src/GitVersion.slnx --verify-no-changes --no-restore passes (workspace-load warnings only); git diff --check passes.
  • Local CodeRabbit review was blocked by its included-review rate limit, not counted as passing. The fresh full hosted review completed at 2026-10-21 10:31 UTC for all 20 files against this base/head. Source and covered commit both equal 98adb96a04284bbfd0de06ba1e03b9e512a30a56, kind reviewed. No actionable findings or current-head inline comments; CodeRabbit explicitly retains the v7.1: remove LibGit2Sharp and native binaries #5040 and platform/distribution gates.
  • Standard CI filters exclude this stacked codex/* target. The disposable pre-default full matrix, execution 696d13c8b0f16f066f40dc61420cddc81f64fd50 / product parent 98adb96a0, completed with 65 successful jobs, one macOS/net10 Core-test timeout and four expected skips. It is not a full pass. All other OS/framework test jobs, complete distro/artifact/Docker matrices passed. New CLI, format and Actionlint passed. Its disposable upstream branch has been removed; the new native-default run above supersedes it for current-head validation.

Historical cross-platform evidence

The earlier temporary validation infrastructure was removed. Its reports remain historical evidence for the recorded source, not current-head native execution on those platforms:

  • Linux/macOS: run 39496997430, revision ac0f005710d4468b1d776b8c9a411421345e9999.
  • Windows ARM64: run 39499687013, revision 599721e6e52047ac1a37effc04e3b2cca0807ba0.
  • Windows x64 and Server Core: run 39503302370, revision 94f5b051a64cac5541f16e81a63e012d9efdc7ac.

Each framework on all seven RIDs passed 99 standalone comparisons and 99 tool-path comparisons with each SDK (10 and 11): 1,386 standalone + 2,772 installed-tool comparisons. Reports also recorded 154 native executor checks and 770 runtime-isolated executions / 4,620 smoke checks. These runs used identical src/ digest 374930a1e035132a8738db1fd0625f04cf2b0c5cefd26215b151cf7f26c789b4; the rebased source differs, so these totals are not attributed to the current head.

Linux evidence covers glibc/musl userspaces without modern shared .NET as root/nonroot, on hosted kernels. macOS 15 ARM64 evidence hides known SDK/shared-runtime contents and restores them afterward. Windows Server Core 2022/2025 process containers run as ContainerAdministrator/ContainerUser without shared modern .NET. Isolated local tool feeds were used; no release artifacts were published.

Remaining gates

  • Latest-head hosted packaging/execution and the test-build timeout repair still require the current matrix to finish. No timeout increase, disabled tests, coverage reduction or weakened assertions are used to hide failures. Ordinary JIT CI does not replace native platform execution or installed-tool/runtime-independence evidence.
  • Target OS policy follows the corresponding .NET 10 and .NET 11 matrices within the seven RIDs. Hosted/container tests do not establish older Windows kernels/qualified desktop or Nano editions, older Linux kernels or a fully clean macOS installation. No suitable VMs are available.
  • Signing/notarization, third-party notices, production provenance and release integration require a separate distribution decision. Disposable validation packages/images are not release artifacts.
  • The corpus is bounded: it does not prove every locale, authentication failure, process signal or Git topology. No permanent NativeAOT CI should be introduced to this PR.

Codex responding on behalf of @arturcic.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add an opt-in managed-only NativeAOT build path, update serialization, formatting, and service registration for that path, and add tooling to publish builds and compare managed and native CLI behavior. Normal release defaults remain unchanged.

Changes: Managed-only NativeAOT preview

Layer / File(s) Summary
Managed-only build and backend selection
src/Directory.Build.props, src/GitVersion.App/GitVersion.App.csproj, src/GitVersion.App/FeatureSelections.cs, src/GitVersion.App/CliHost.cs
The app project adds a managed-only build property, excludes the LibGit2Sharp reference in that mode, and requires managed-only mode for NativeAOT builds. Managed-only builds select the managed Git module and reject unsupported backend selectors.
Generated serialization and configuration metadata
src/GitVersion.App/ConfigurationValidation*, src/GitVersion.BuildAgents/Agents/AppVeyor*, src/GitVersion.Configuration/*, src/GitVersion.App.Tests/ConfigurationValidationJsonTests.cs, src/GitVersion.BuildAgents.Tests/Agents/AppVeyorJsonTests.cs, src/GitVersion.Configuration.Tests/Configuration/*
Configuration validation and AppVeyor requests use source-generated JSON metadata. Configuration serialization and property lookup use generated metadata or supported model-property lists. Tests cover JSON output, legacy YAML conversions, and property queries.
Trim-aware formatting and explicit registrations
src/GitVersion.Core/Formatting/*, src/GitVersion.Core/VersionCalculation/*, src/GitVersion.Core/Core/Abstractions/IGitVersionModule.cs, src/GitVersion.BuildAgents/GitVersionBuildAgentsModule.cs, src/GitVersion.Core.Tests/Formatting/VersionFormatTests.cs, src/GitVersion.Core.Tests/DependencyRegistrationTests.cs
Formatting uses explicit member metadata for supported version models and adds trimming annotations to object-based member discovery. Build-agent and version-strategy modules explicitly register implementations. Tests cover formatting behavior and registration order.
Parity harness setup and comparison
build/nativeaot-parity.py
The harness accepts managed and native executable inputs, prepares its environment and Git fixtures, and compares results, normalized output, and side effects while recording per-case failures.
Parity scenarios and report
build/nativeaot-parity.py
Parity cases cover configuration, Git history, formatting, generated files, logging, build-agent integrations, backend selection, and optional existing-history clones. The JSON report includes hashes, metadata, limitations, case results, and pass/fail totals.
Publication validation and preview documentation
build/publish-nativeaot.ps1, build/nativeaot.md
The script publishes and validates native and managed builds, runs parity checks, records evidence, and can create a checksummed archive. The documentation describes the preview scope, validation results, and remaining platform and release gates.

@coderabbitai review

Please re-review commit a8978c5, which addresses both findings from the full review:

  • Global/system Git configuration is disabled for fixtures and child processes.
  • Source identity uses the script's repository root, sanitized Git environment, root-relative file paths and 60-second subprocess timeouts.

Both failures were reproduced before the fix. The repaired harness passes all 99 cases per framework from outside the checkout with hostile global/system configuration and an unrelated inherited GIT_DIR, while reporting the expected source SHA and digest. The PR remains a draft.

These exceptions bypass results.append(...), so main() can exit before printing the JSON report. The publication wrapper then receives an incomplete parity.json instead of a normal failed-case report.

Route these checks through an exception-safe helper, or catch these exceptions at this boundary and append failed cases with the captured failure details.

compare runs managed before native. These cases provide no cache reset or capture, so native can read the managed process's flavor-independent .git/gitversion_cache entry. The cases can therefore pass without exercising native cache calculation or detecting native cache mutations. Reset or restore the same initial cache before each process and capture the resulting cache state for comparison.

@coderabbitai review

Please review the latest SonarCloud remediation commit on this draft PR. The parity runner is split into scenario groups and execution/reporting helpers; fixture constants, environment filtering and callback binding address the Python findings. PowerShell uses -not consistently. The C# S2325 annotation documents an instance member required by IConfigurationSerializer, matching its neighboring methods.

Validation: the exact same ordered 99-case corpus passes on net10.0 and net11.0 against the existing native/JIT pairs; Configuration tests pass 298/298 per TFM; targeted environment/backend/cache/callback and PowerShell identity/gate checks pass. Fresh CodeRabbit CLI review completed with zero findings. No native platform or distribution gap is closed by this cleanup, and the PR remains a draft.

The completed review through 31e3e8f reported no actionable comments. Please review the final four-line extraction in 0923ae8, which separates startup/configuration validation to address SonarCloud's remaining complexity finding (16 versus the allowed 15). Both TFMs still pass the same 99 parity cases, and the delta CLI review completed with zero findings. The PR remains a draft.

@coderabbitai review

Please review the new validation-only NativeAOT platform matrix and supporting scripts on this draft PR, including the remote-only checkout regression fix. The branch has been rebased onto bde3669 (latest main at the rebase).

The matrix uses native target OS/CPU runners for all seven RIDs on net10.0 and net11.0. It pins strict native/JIT publishing inputs and runs the 99-case parity corpus; Linux also runs independent checks in containers without .NET, as root/nonroot. Only reports/logs are retained, and release defaults/publication are unchanged.

Local Linux ARM64 glibc and musl native publishes and 99/99 parity pass for net10.0, plus all six no-.NET smoke checks for both root and UID 65532. Seven validation regression tests pass, including a red/green reproduction of refs lost from a remote-only/detached source checkout. All fourteen hosted target/framework jobs are being verified; their configuration alone is not counted as passed platform evidence.

CLI findings about stderr/JSON separation, inaccessible runtime paths and malformed-report failure evidence were confirmed and fixed. Fresh CLI review is currently rate-limited; a cached zero-finding result was not counted as a fresh review. Please verify these repairs and the current diff. The PR must remain a draft while outstanding platform/distribution gates remain.

Validate the complete parity case set.

check_report validates the count and uniqueness of case names, but it requires only existing-history-json. The parity corpus also registers existing-history-config. A report can replace that case with another unique passing name and pass the NativeAOT gate without executing the complete corpus.

Compare the reported names with one fixed set containing all 99 corpus names. Add a regression case that replaces existing-history-config with another unique passing name.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject every DLL from the managed-only NativeAOT output.

The current closure check rejects only libgit2 filenames and gitversion.dll. An unrelated managed DLL can therefore pass the gate. The validator then proceeds to parity and reports success, and the preview publisher can create an archive despite the invalid NativeAOT closure.

Suggested fix
-    if any("libgit2" in path.name.lower() for path in native.rglob("*")) or (native / "gitversion.dll").exists():
+    if any("libgit2" in path.name.lower() or path.suffix.lower() == ".dll" for path in native.rglob("*")):
         raise RuntimeError("Native output includes a forbidden managed/backend payload")

Apply the same extension-independent DLL check in build/publish-nativeaot.ps1, replacing its exact gitversion.dll test.

Please review current head 296b154 while keeping this PR a draft. Both confirmed findings from review 5590531960 are repaired: both validators require the exact fixed 99-case corpus and reject every DLL payload case-insensitively; the manifest is included in source identity. The two new regression tests fail all five injected variants before the fix and pass afterward, all nine regression tests pass, PowerShell guard checks pass, and fresh CLI review reports zero findings. The older-OS baseline matrix also completed all 14 jobs with 99/99 parity each and 240 no-.NET smoke checks; remaining clean-VM and distribution gaps stay open.

Require each Linux archive to match the collected package version.

If the directory contains a gitversion-linux-x64-7.0.0.tar.gz archive and version 7.1.0 tool packages, this count accepts the archive. The collected set can then distribute different CLI versions by installation method. Match each archive’s version to version, as Lines 30–35 already do for tool packages.

Codex responding on behalf of @arturcic. Regarding the Cake addin/extension question: replaced manual XML loading and ID extraction with NuGet.Packaging's PackageArchiveReader/NuspecReader in c336259. This version (7.9.0) was already resolved through Cake; it is now an explicit centrally versioned build dependency. Kept ambiguity guards because NuGet tolerates duplicate metadata/id nodes, plus our RID/payload rules. Build, restored-solution formatting, 11 controlled cases, 12 real packages and local CodeRabbit (0 findings) pass.

Configuration = context.MsBuildConfiguration,
Framework = $"net{version}",
// MSBuild embeds managed CLI dependencies; it does not launch the native tool.

Codex responding on behalf of @arturcic. Regarding whether this property is still defined: yes, GitVersion.App.csproj defaults the SDK's PublishAot property to true. Verified evaluated values are true normally and false with this override. This publication supplies managed DLLs embedded in GitVersion.MsBuild, so the override remains necessary; standalone CLI/RID tool publication remains NativeAOT by default.

Codex responding on behalf of @arturcic. Moved the six-entry native packaging matrix into Cake's existing SetMatrix task in d3c6c5f. The prepare workflow exports build_matrix; CI passes it to this reusable workflow, which only consumes the JSON to schedule runners. Local SetMatrix output and GitHub output-file emission both work, and all six rows/five fields match the previous YAML exactly. Build, formatting, Actionlint and fresh local CodeRabbit review (0 findings) pass.

LibGit2Sharp and its native binaries are removed in v7.1. The managed backend
introduced as the v7.0 default is the sole backend. Unset
`GITVERSION_GIT_BACKEND=libgit2`; selecting `libgit2` now fails with migration

Use the variable name in the unset instruction.

unset applies to GITVERSION_GIT_BACKEND, not to GITVERSION_GIT_BACKEND=libgit2. State that users must remove GITVERSION_GIT_BACKEND from the environment or set it to managed.
