A site can now add user-agent substrings to the bot filter. RollupRequest gains botUserAgents, and the rollup commands take it as --bot-user-agent (repeatable). Each substring is a literal strpos test on lower(cs_user_agent) next to the built-in bot|crawl|spider|slurp pattern. It applies to the counts, to the stored visitor count and to both halves of a conversion rate, and --include-bots lifts it together with the four. A substring that is empty or contains whitespace is refused (a usage error on the command line, an Error at synthesis). CloudFront logs a space as %20, so such a substring could never match.

Closes #208

  • Conventional commit message, used as the title
  • Conventional branch name, like feat/concise-description
  • Full check with pnpm run check passed
  • Rebased off latest main
  • User-facing behaviour is documented in docs/

Where the list lives. The list follows the route #209 took for countries, with no site-wide setting. Three things in the code decided it. SavedRollupRequest and SummaryQuestion are both derived from RollupRequest, so the field reaches RollupQueries, RollupSummaries and the summary payload check in summary-run.ts without edits. The command line reads a deployment's narrowing back through summary-adoption.ts: a run that gives no --bot-user-agent takes the stored list and prints Took --bot-user-agent productfinder from the summaries. That is how the command line and the stored summaries end up on one list, and a site-wide setting would need a second channel to the CLI (which has no site config of its own). The requests docs already say that a fact belonging to every question is a variable spread into each entry, and docs/rollups/ shows that for this list.

When comparing a stored question with an asked one, the list is compared only where neither side counts bots, as a set, folded to lower case. The saved query description gains "leaving out user agents containing …".

Files. The new code pushed rollup-rows.ts, option-values.ts and summary-question.ts over the FTA cap of 50. The bot filter moved into src/bot-filter.ts, the --bot-user-agent reader into src/cli/bot-user-agents.ts, and the per-option text helpers from summary-question.ts into src/cli/question-text.ts. #210 merged before this branch was cut, so none of its files are touched here.

Open question. #208 asks whether the built-in four should grow as well. productfinder would catch GeedoShopProductFinder on every deployment. A broader finder or scraper would catch more crawlers, but it also adds to the false positives the botUserAgentPattern comment already accepts for Cubot phones. This change leaves the four as they are, and growing them can follow separately.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for custom bot user-agent substring filters across rollups and command-line workflows.
    • Repeated --bot-user-agent options can exclude matching automated traffic using case-insensitive literal matching.
    • --include-bots continues to include traffic matching custom and built-in bot filters.
    • Custom filters are reflected in generated summaries and saved-query descriptions.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Added validation and clear errors for empty or whitespace-containing user-agent values.
  • Documentation

    • Documented filter behavior, summary matching, configuration, and saved-query limitations.

A crawler such as GeedoShopProductFinder names itself without bot, crawl,
spider or slurp, and every rollup counted it as a desktop visitor.
RollupRequest gains botUserAgents, matched literally and without regard to
case beside the built-in four, and the command line takes it as
--bot-user-agent. --include-bots still counts everything.

📝 Walkthrough

Rollup requests can specify custom bot user-agent substrings. The shared SQL filter and CLI apply those values, and stored-summary matching accounts for them. When includeBots is enabled, the custom exclusions are not applied.

Changes: Custom bot filtering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared filter and rollup contract
src/rollups.ts, src/bot-filter.ts, src/rollup-rows.ts, src/rollups.test.ts, docs/rollups/README.md
RollupRequest accepts custom bot substrings. The shared filter validates them and adds case-insensitive literal-match predicates to generated SQL. Tests cover invalid values and includeBots.
CLI option and request wiring
src/cli/rollup-help.ts, src/cli/bot-user-agents.ts, src/cli/rollup-options.ts, src/cli/rollup-command-options.ts, src/cli/rollup-commands.test.ts, src/cli/saved-query-help.ts
Rollup commands accept repeated --bot-user-agent values. The CLI normalizes and validates them before constructing the request.
Stored-summary matching and narrowing
src/cli/summary-question.ts, src/cli/summary-narrowings.ts, src/cli/question-text.ts, src/cli/summary-help.ts, src/functions/summary-run.ts, src/cli/summary-answer.test.ts
Summary questions compare bot-user-agent filters when neither question includes bots. Narrowing preserves the values and serializes them as repeated options. Tests cover filter reporting and mismatches with computed summaries.
CDK query descriptions and summaries
src/cdk/named-query-text.ts, src/cdk/rollup-queries.test.ts, src/cdk/rollup-summaries.test.ts
Saved-query descriptions include configured bot-user-agent exclusions. Tests cover generated SQL descriptions and the effect on views and distinct visitors.

Explanation

The pull request satisfies the coding requirements in #208. RollupRequest.botUserAgents supplies per-request values. automatedLeftOut applies case-insensitive literal strpos filters with the built-in bot|crawl|spider|slurp filter. includeBots removes all filters. Rollup, stored-summary, scheduled-summary, visitor-count, and conversion paths use the shared request value. CLI validation rejects empty or whitespace values. Tests cover SQL, CLI behavior, stored summaries, crawler exclusion from counts and visitors, and restoration with includeBots. docs/rollups/README.md names the four built-in patterns and documents repeated --bot-user-agent usage.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #208. The new CLI option, request field, shared filter, summary propagation, comparison logic, tests, and documentation implement the requested configurable bot filtering. The question-text.ts move and bot-filter extraction support the implementation and reduce file size. No unrelated country-filter implementation or built-in-pattern expansion was added.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 93.33% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 15 functions across 19 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request includes a concise change summary, issue reference, all required checklist items, test status, rebase status, and documentation status. It also provides relevant implementation details and identifies an open design question. The description adds headings and bullet lists after the summary, although the template requests one paragraph; this is non-critical because the required information is complete.
