feat: export the command line, and name the days a question reads - #212
Conversation
@kensio/rainlytics/cli exports runCli, rainlyticsCommands and rollupCommand, with the types a site's own command needs. A site runs the command line with its own rollups added, and they read their stored summaries the way the shipped questions do. Every named question takes --day, and --from with --until, beside --last. A span written in whole UTC days reads whole stored days, so a conversion rate can be read for one day it stored. backfill reads its --from and --until through the same parser. Closes #201

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
isCalendarDay throws RangeError for out-of-range months and days. --day then skips the UsageError path.
isADay (Line 58) calls isCalendarDay right after the aDay regex test. The regex accepts any \d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2} text.
For --day 2026-13-01 or --day 2026-01-32, new Date("…T00:00:00Z") is an Invalid Date. toISOString() on an Invalid Date throws RangeError: Invalid time value.
dayRange in asked-span.ts then never reaches its UsageError. The user gets a RangeError from runCli, not the intended "--day takes a UTC day as YYYY-MM-DD" message with exit code 2. The new test covers only 2026-02-30, which Date rolls into March, so it does not catch this.
instantFrom is safe because it checks Number.isNaN(instant.getTime()) before it calls isCalendarDay. isADay has no such check.
Fix the root cause in isCalendarDay, so every caller is covered:

}Add a test case in asked-span.test.ts for --day 2026-13-01. It must expect exit code 2.
Based on learnings: a regex shape check alone accepts semantically invalid dates. Each check must cover its specific failure cases, including a native Date parse check.

Closes #201.
Exported command line
@kensio/rainlytics/cliis a new entry inexports. It carriesrunCli,rainlyticsCommandsandrollupCommand, plus the types a site writing a command of its own needs (Command,CommandContext,CliIo,CommandResultand the rest) andUsageErrorfor a mistake in what was typed. poprobincards-26 can import these in place of loading three files fromdist/cli/by path.pack-check.shnow expectsdist/cli/index.jsin the tarball and imports it there, with nothing installed beside it, checking that the three functions are exported.Named days
Every named question takes
--day YYYY-MM-DD, and--fromwith an optional--until, beside--last.--dayis one UTC day, midnight to midnight.--fromand--untilare written asbackfillwrites them (a date for midnight UTC, or an ISO 8601 instant with its offset), with--untiloutside the span and defaulting to now. The parser moved out ofbackfill-request.tsintosrc/cli/instant-text.tsso both commands read the same text the same way.The span replaces the
--lastrange inRollupAsked, so the existing summary reader and--queryboth use it unchanged. A span written in whole days lands on whole stored days. A conversion rate, which answers from one stored window only, reads one day with--day.--country,--bot-user-agentand the other narrowings combine as they do with--last, since they select the question and the span selects the windows. Naming the span two ways (--daywith--last, say) is refused with exit code 2.The Rainlytics form differs from the site's
day <question> [days...]command in one respect. It reads one span per run, with nodaycolumn across several days. A site wanting a day-by-day table of conversion rates runs the command once per day.Tests and docs
src/cli/asked-span.test.tsdrives a site's command line built from the new export against a simulated bucket. It covers a site's own conversion rate read for one day, the same rate refused over--last, days added across--from/--until, a day combined with--country, the day reaching a--queryrequest, and the refusals.docs/command-line/gains "Name the days to read" and "Add your own questions".docs/rollups/covers the new options under filtering and conversion rates, and no longer says the command list holds only shipped questions.AGENTS.mdis untracked, so its notes on the CLI are not part of this change.Written by Claude.
