IronRuby's version now follows the Ruby version it implements: IronRuby 4.0 is Ruby 4.0, and it becomes 4.1 with Ruby 4.1. The last number counts IronRuby's own releases for that Ruby version. It is not CRuby's patch level.

  • CurrentVersion.cs / CurrentVersion.props: 4.0.0-preview1 (was 1.2.0-dev)
  • RUBY_ENGINE_VERSION is IronRuby's version without the pre-release suffix (4.0.0); IRONRUBY_VERSION is the full one
  • README: new "Version numbers" section, and the example output
$ ./ir.sh -e 'puts RUBY_DESCRIPTION; p [RUBY_VERSION, RUBY_ENGINE_VERSION, IRONRUBY_VERSION]'
IronRuby 4.0.0-preview1 (4.0.0) on .NET 8.0.31 [x86_64-linux]
["4.0.0", "4.0.0", "4.0.0-preview1"]

spec/language/predefined_spec.rb and spec/core/builtin_constants: 199 examples, 0 failures.

After merging, tag v4.0.0-preview1 to publish the first binary release.

IronRuby 4.0 is Ruby 4.0 and becomes 4.1 with Ruby 4.1; the last number counts
IronRuby's own releases for that Ruby version. The first binary release is
4.0.0-preview1. RUBY_ENGINE_VERSION is IronRuby's version without the suffix,
so it agrees with RUBY_VERSION the way it does in CRuby.
