CI builds libprism from prism's main, and since ruby/prism#4255 (attach_comments, merged 2026-10-12) every build job fails in the smoke test with Unknown prism node type: 0 (TypeError): master, #17, #18, #19 and #20 alike. The last green master run built prism 9d5a604b; the failing ones build cd76b0d1.

That change altered prism's serialization in two places without bumping the serialization version (still 1.9), so PrismLoader's version check couldn't catch it:

  • the options blob has a new attach_comments byte after freeze. IronRuby's blob was one byte short, so prism read the scope count from the wrong offset;
  • the serialized header has a comment-attachment list after the comments. PrismLoader read its count as the magic-comment count and walked off from there.

Changes

  • PrismParser.BuildOptionsData writes the new byte (0; IronRuby never asks for attachments). PrismLoader.Load skips the attachment list. PrismLex only reads the token stream, which ends before the header, so it needs nothing.
  • Src/Prism/Generated regenerated from cd76b0d1's config.yml: SymbolNode#value_loc became the non-optional content_loc (the bridge reads neither), and a WORDS_SEP_IMPLICIT token was added after WORDS_SEP. Ripper looks tokens up by name and skips ones it has no event for, the same as prism's own lex_compat does with this token.
  • Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism is prism's lib/ at cd76b0d1, generated files included; prism.rb keeps IronRuby's backend branch. parse_result/comments.rb is gone upstream: attaching comments moved into libprism.
  • Src/StdLib/ironruby/prism/ironruby.rb follows ffi.rb: attach_comments is a known option and is dumped after freeze, and the *_file APIs accept a Pathname like PrismSource.with_file now does.
  • release.yml's PRISM_REF and the README build instructions move to cd76b0d1, so CI and releases build the same prism again.

Testing

No .NET SDK on the machine this was written on, so this PR's CI run is the first real build and test. What was checked locally with CRuby 4.0:

  • the vendored tree is byte-identical (modulo line endings) to prism's generated lib/ at cd76b0d1, apart from the prism.rb backend branch;
  • all 41 changed Ruby files compile;
  • dump_options, dump_options_command_line, dump_options_version, version_string_to_number and DUMP_OPTIONS_KEYS in ironruby.rb match upstream ffi.rb line for line;
  • the C# options layout matches dump_options field for field.

Once this is green, re-run CI on #17, #18 and #20 (rebasing or "Update branch" picks this up).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Parsing and related APIs now support an attach_comments option, making comments associated with their syntax nodes available through node comment access.
    • File-based APIs accept path-like values in addition to strings.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved newline tracking in parsed Ruby code and handling of implicit word separators in lexer compatibility output.
    • Improved node lookup for source-range inputs when RubyVM is unavailable.
    • Corrected symbol content locations and comment handling in parser translations.

CI builds libprism from prism's main branch, and since ruby/prism#4255
(attach_comments, merged 2026-10-12) every build job has failed in the
smoke test with "Unknown prism node type: 0 (TypeError)" - master, #17,
#18 and #19 alike. That change altered prism's serialization in two
places without moving the serialization version off 1.9, so the version
check in PrismLoader could not catch it:

- the options blob has a new attach_comments byte after freeze. The blob
  IronRuby wrote was one byte short, so prism read the scope count from
  the wrong offset;
- the serialized header has a comment-attachment list after the comments
  (node id, count, comment indices). PrismLoader read its count as the
  magic comment count and walked off from there.

PrismParser.BuildOptionsData writes the byte (0: IronRuby never asks for
attachments) and PrismLoader.Load skips the list. PrismLex only reads the
token stream, which ends before the header, so it needs nothing.

The rest of the revision comes along so that every piece names the same
prism commit, as Src/Prism/README.md asks:

- Src/Prism/Generated is regenerated from cd76b0d1's config.yml:
  SymbolNode#value_loc became the non-optional content_loc (the bridge
  reads neither), and a WORDS_SEP_IMPLICIT token was added after
  WORDS_SEP. Ripper looks tokens up by name and skips the ones it has no
  event for, which is what prism's own lex_compat does with this one.
- Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism is prism's lib/ at cd76b0d1, generated files
  included; prism.rb keeps IronRuby's backend branch.
  parse_result/comments.rb is gone upstream - attaching comments moved
  into libprism.
- Src/StdLib/ironruby/prism/ironruby.rb follows ffi.rb: attach_comments
  is a known option and is dumped after freeze, and the *_file APIs take
  a Pathname (to_path / to_str) the way PrismSource.with_file now does.
- release.yml's PRISM_REF and the README build instructions move to
  cd76b0d1.

📝 Walkthrough

The Prism revision changes across release configuration, serialized data handling, and Ruby APIs. The update adds comment-attachment support, changes SymbolNode content-location fields, and adjusts lexer, newline, and parser integrations.

Changes: Prism update

Layer / File(s) Summary
Revision, options, and file APIs
.github/workflows/release.yml, README.md, Src/Prism/*, Src/Prism/README.md, Src/StdLib/ironruby/prism/ironruby.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/ffi.rb
The Prism pins change to cd76b0d1. The file APIs pass options through their file-reading helpers, accept path-like values, and serialize attach_comments. The Prism parser loader reads comment-attachment data.
Comment storage and access
Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/node.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/parse_result*, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/serialize.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/relocation.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/translation/ruby_parser.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/lex_compat.rb
Comments and their node attachments are stored on Source and loaded from serialized data. Node#comments reads attachments by node ID. Location-based comment attachment and relocation comment APIs are removed. Ruby parser translation reads comments and source text from the result.
Symbol content locations
Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/node.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/node_ext.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/{dot_visitor,dsl,inspect_visitor,reflection,serialize}.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/translation/*
SymbolNode uses content and required content_loc in place of value and optional value_loc. Visitors, serialization, reflection, and translation code use the updated fields. node_ext adds value and value_loc methods.
Lexer, newline, and parser compatibility
Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/{lex_compat,parse_result/newlines,serialize}.rb, Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/translation/parser/*
LexCompat tracks recent tokens and embedded-expression states. Implicit word separators map to Ripper space tokens. Newline tracking changes for scopes, loops, and selected expressions.
Additional Prism integrations
Src/StdLib/ruby/4.0/prism/{ffi,node_find,pattern}.rb
The FFI header parser handles leading Prism attributes. NodeFind adds source-range lookup when RubyVM is unavailable. Pattern compilation accepts constant-path parents.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1ba19

Large, heavily commented files may translate more slowly. The change is mergeable with this bounded performance issue addressed or accepted.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1ba19

The update aligns the parser and its readers, and release builds pin the matching native revision. No new privilege escalation or filesystem capability was established. The main remaining risk is reuse of incompatible serialized data during upgrades or partial rollback; broader native and downstream behavior remains incompletely assessed.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The base and head use the same 1.9.0 serialization header despite different field layouts. Independently supplied base-format blobs can pass the header check and then be decoded with shifted fields. This creates a compatibility and failure-containment risk when serialized data survives an upgrade or partial rollback. Matching release pinning is strong counterevidence for normal parsing; no production cache or cross-service consumer was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected exposure is the caller's parser-host process and its existing file-read authority. A host that accepts attacker-supplied serialized bytes can expose decoder allocations and failures to that attacker. No remote or tenant-specific entrypoint was established by the inspected paths.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The new attachment decoder trusts serialized node IDs and comment indexes: a large node ID can expand the range array, and an invalid comment index can insert nil. However, externally supplied serialization and unchecked allocation counts already existed in the base ConstantPool decoder. This is not established as a newly enlarged security exposure, and normal producer ordering is counterevidence against malformed ranges arising from ordinary parsing.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Unknown Ruby options remain rejected. Ruby deserialization checks serialization magic, version, and inclusion of location fields, and checks completion before publishing a parse result. These controls detect structural incompatibility in some cases, but do not authenticate serialized data or validate attachment membership.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Fresh per-load state and finally-based native cleanup contain ordinary decoding exceptions and repeated calls. They do not provide a process-level resource budget for malicious serialization or demonstrate containment of faults inside the native dependency.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If serialized trees are retained across upgrades, bind them to the producer revision or an explicit format discriminator. If hosts accept untrusted serialized bytes, apply decoder-wide allocation budgets and validate attachment identities before allocating sparse ranges or publishing results.
