openrom-core --help failed with Error parsing arguments: FormatException: Could not find an option named "--help" because the parser never defined a help flag and main fell straight through to ArgParser.parse. This adds a real --help / -h flag, prints the full option list, and also shows usage when the CLI is run with no arguments or given a bad option.
$ ./openrom-core --help
Error parsing arguments: FormatException: Could not find an option named "--help". # exit 2
$ ./openrom-core --help
OpenROM CLI — Universal ROM Compression Suite
Usage: openrom-core [options]
-i, --input single input ROM file
...
-h, --help show this help message
-v, --version show version # exit 0
printUsage renders the header plus ArgParser.usage, so the help text stays in sync with the option definitions automatically.
Other changes
core/test/cli_help_test.dart — regression tests running the real CLI entrypoint (--help, -h, no args, unknown option, --version).
README.md — documented openrom-core --help in the CLI usage section.
Version bumped to 3.9.8 across VERSION, core/pubspec.yaml, gui/pubspec.yaml (+ lock/fallback/test references) so the release can be cut from this commit.
Verification
cd core && dart analyze # No issues found!
cd core && dart test # All tests passed! (121 passed, 10 skipped)

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The CLI displays full usage information and available options with --help or -h. Running it without arguments also displays the usage guide.
Bug Fixes
Invalid CLI options now show an error and usage information before exiting.
Documentation
CLI examples now include a command for viewing all available options.
Release
Updated the application version to 3.9.8. Android is not included in this release.
The CLI rejected --help with "Could not find an option named \"--help\"".
Add a --help/-h flag that prints the full usage, print usage instead of a
bare one-liner when no arguments are given, and print usage to stderr
alongside the error when parsing fails.
Also add regression tests and bump the version to 3.9.8.
Co-authored-by: openhands <openhands@all-hands.dev>
The CLI now recognizes --help and -h, prints usage for help requests, empty arguments, and parse errors, and loads plugins only after successful parsing and early help or version exits. Version values and references change from 3.9.7 to 3.9.8.

Summary
CLI help and parsing core/bin/openrom.dart, core/test/cli_help_test.dart, README.md
The parser adds --help and -h. The CLI prints usage for help requests, empty arguments, and parse errors. Help and version requests exit before plugin loading. Subprocess tests cover these cases, and the README adds a help example.
3.9.8 version alignment VERSION, core/pubspec.yaml, gui/lib/utils/app_version.dart, gui/pubspec.yaml, gui/test/app_version_test.dart, docs/DEVELOPER_ONBOARDING.md
Version values and references change from 3.9.7 to 3.9.8. The GUI dependency on openrom_core changes to 3.9.8.
M5Devs/OpenROM#184: Both PRs change CLI execution behavior in core/bin/openrom.dart.
M5Devs/OpenROM#189: Both PRs update the GUI package's openrom_core dependency version.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 33c40
The current behavior is correct, but the version test leaves a narrow regression risk around plugin output.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 33c40
The changed informational and error paths avoid plugin discovery and registry initialization. Operational commands still load plugins before execution. No material security risk was found introduced or worsened by this change.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed argument paths affect the invoking CLI process and whether it scans its local plugin storage. The new test helper launches the existing CLI with fixed argument lists; it does not establish a remotely accessible command surface.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — Caller-controlled arguments can select informational exits but cannot use those branches to reach an operational handler without initialization: each branch returns immediately. Commands that proceed retain the existing loader and its manifest-validation and compatibility checks.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The reordered early exits do not create a new partially completed registry transition: they return before registry clearing or registration. Operational commands retain the original awaited initialization and existing failure behavior; this PR introduces no new retry, recovery or concurrent initialization mechanism.

Explanation
Issue #188 requires recognition of --help. buildParser() defines help with abbr: 'h', and _runCli() prints parser-generated usage for --help and no arguments. Parse errors print usage to stderr and return code 2. The reported regression tests cover the help flags and related CLI behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The help implementation, CLI tests, and README help example support issue #188. The version changes in VERSION, both package manifests, GUI fallback data, and GUI test data are release metadata that issue #188 does not require. docs/DEVELOPER_ONBOARDING.md also changes the documented version and Android release note without a demonstrated connection to the help fix.
Resolution
Move the version and release-documentation changes to a separate release change, or link a requirement that connects them to issue #188.

loadInstalledPlugins() can log to stdout, which polluted --version output
when a plugin was installed. Handle both early-exit flags before any side
effects and tighten the regression test accordingly.

Without an installed plugin, this test also passes if plugin loading moves before the version check. Run the subprocess with a temporary plugin directory containing a manifest, so the test detects plugin logging. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @core/test/cli_help_test.dart around lines 47 - 49:
Update the version-output subprocess test around the `stdout` assertion to run
with a temporary plugin directory containing a valid manifest, and configure the
subprocess to use that directory. Keep the assertion that stdout contains only
the version output so plugin-loading logs would cause the test to fail.
