📦🔧:bound how much a failed assertion describes - #142
Before: assertion messages described values with String, JSON.stringify and util.inspect (depth 1000). Each of these prints a shared object again everywhere it is reached. Take a 41-object graph with two paths to one object at each of 40 levels: describing it means 2 ** 40 copies of the bottom object. assertEqual, assertValue, the Assert accessors, isDeepEqualTo and AssertionError's default message spent all their time and memory building that message and never threw. CodeRabbit's security deepscan flagged this as CWE-400 in _stringify-value.ts and inspect-value.ts.
After: such a value is described by its top level only, and the assertion fails within milliseconds. Anything smaller is described exactly as before.
How: the new _exceedsDisplayBudget counts the properties a full description would show, the same way those functions show them. A shared object counts at every path, a cycle counts once, and Map and Set entries are included. A Map, Set or typed array wider than what is left is refused from its size alone, and a node that cannot be read (such as a revoked proxy) is counted with whatever could be read of it. The counter never runs a getter. Where the description itself would run getters (inspectValue and the error message), an enumerable getter counts as over budget. The count stops as soon as it passes 100,000, so it never costs more than that. Past the limit, inspectValue uses depth 0. _stringifyValue checks objects first and sends an oversized one to that shallow inspect, which also avoids String of nested arrays, since join repeats shared entries too. Tests cover the counter (shared objects, cycles, collections, unreadable nodes, getters) and the 40-level graph through inspectValue, _stringifyValue, assertEqual, assertValue and new AssertionError. Each of those finishes in under 60 ms; before this change the test was killed after 60 s. All 143 @openinf/assert tests and knip pass on Node 24.
Failed assertions involving values with more than 100,000 properties now display a top-level summary instead of expanding the full structure.
Values with heavily shared objects are also summarized at the top level, avoiding excessive processing time and memory use when generating assertion messages.
Large Maps, Sets, and typed arrays receive the same bounded display treatment, helping assertions finish and report failures reliably.
Enumerable getters are not invoked when deciding whether a value needs a top-level summary.

Walkthrough
Assertion value formatting now checks a 100,000-property display budget. When a value exceeds the budget, its description shows only the top level. Tests cover traversal behavior and prompt completion of assertion-message generation.
The new traversal counts enumerable own properties and checks Map, Set, and typed-array sizes against the remaining budget. Shared objects count each time they are reached, and cycles stop along the current path. When configured to account for getters, it treats enumerable getters as over budget without invoking them. Tests cover traversal, read failures, and getter handling.
Bounded value formatting packages/assert/helpers/inspect-value.ts, packages/assert/src/_internal/_stringify-value.ts, packages/assert/test/_internal/_exceeds-display-budget.ts, .changeset/bounded-assert-messages.md
inspectValue accepts a tooBig argument and uses depth zero when it is true. _stringifyValue checks the budget before conversion and uses top-level inspection for oversized values. If inspection throws, _stringifyValue returns '<unavailable value>'. Integration tests cover formatting and prompt completion; the changeset declares a patch release.

Reject enumerable accessors before the JSON fallback.
The budget walker skips enumerable accessors, but the existing JSON.stringify(value) fallback invokes them. An accessor can therefore return a deeply shared graph and cause exponential serialization work on an assertion-message path. Treat an enumerable accessor as over budget so _stringifyValue selects the shallow fallback.
Suggested fix
- if (descriptor?.enumerable === true && 'value' in descriptor) {+ if (descriptor?.enumerable === true) {+ if (!('value' in descriptor)) return false;
children.push(descriptor.value);
}

Review comment at @packages/assert/src/_internal/_stringify-value.ts around
lines 20 - 36:
Update _exceedsDisplayBudget so enumerable accessor properties are classified as
over budget without invoking their getters; this makes _stringifyValue use its
shallow inspectValue fallback instead of JSON.stringify. Preserve traversal of
enumerable data properties.
Assertion messages describe values with String, JSON.stringify and
util.inspect, and all three show a shared object again wherever it is
reached. A graph with two paths to one object at each of 40 levels is
41 objects, yet describing it means 2 ** 40 copies of the bottom one:
assertEqual, assertValue, the Assert accessors and AssertionError's
default message spent all their time and memory on the message and
never threw.
Before describing an object, the property count it would show is now
tallied the way those functions show it, counting a shared object at
every path, a cycle once, and running no getters, and stopping as
soon as the count passes 100,000. A Map, Set or typed array wider
than what is left is refused from its size, read through the built-in
getters, before any of its entries are listed, so a large Buffer
costs nothing to refuse. A node that cannot be read, such as a revoked
proxy, is counted with what could be read of it rather than ending the
count. Where the description runs getters, as util.inspect does for
inspectValue and the error message, an enumerable getter counts as over
budget, since what it returns cannot be counted without running it.
Past the budget, only the top level is shown, through util.inspect at
depth 0. Anything smaller is described
as before.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on _stringify-value.ts (getters): fixed in ab6c8e5. _exceedsDisplayBudget takes a runsGetters flag; when the description will run getters (_stringifyValue and inspectValue, which uses getters: true), an enumerable accessor counts as over budget, so a getter returning a huge graph only gets the top-level view. New tests cover both paths. Please review the new head.

@DerekNonGeneric I inspected head ab6c8e5. The getter fix is present:
Both _stringifyValue and inspectValue pass runsGetters: true.
The budget check treats enumerable accessors as over budget without invoking them.
Regression tests cover getter-returned graphs through both description paths.
This addresses the reported getter concern in the inspected code. I did not run the tests.
I’ll request an incremental review of the new head.

Learning: Within repository "OpenINF/sdk", only for files matching one of ["packages/assert/src/_internal/_exceeds-display-budget.ts"]: When reviewing changes to _exceedsDisplayBudget in packages/assert/src/_internal/_exceeds-display-budget.ts, verify that failures while reading a node's size or entries are handled per node: retain any collected children and continue counting the rest of the graph rather than returning false for the whole value. Check regression coverage with an unreadable node before an oversized shared-object graph, including a revoked Proxy, a Proxy around a Map, and Object.create(Map.prototype). An unreadable node alone need not exceed the budget; retain the outer catch for unexpected errors.
