Summary

read_default_file=Path(...) raised TypeError: connect() argument must be str, not PosixPath because values were passed straight to the C API.

Run stringy connection options through os.fspath() before super().__init__.

Fixes #319.

Test plan

  • Unit test asserts a pathlib.Path is converted to str before the C connection init (mocked)
  • Manual: connect with read_default_file=Path("...") against a real server when libmysql is available

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Connection options that accept paths now also support path-like values, such as Path objects.

Pass connection string options through os.fspath so pathlib.Path works
for read_default_file, unix_socket, SSL paths, and similar C API args.

Fixes PyMySQL#319.

📝 Walkthrough

The connection constructor converts selected file, socket, SSL, command, and local-infile directory options with os.fspath() before calling the underlying initializer. A regression test checks this conversion for a Path passed as read_default_file.

Changes: Path-like connection options

Layer / File(s) Summary
Convert connection options
src/MySQLdb/connections.py, tests/test_connection_pathlike.py
The constructor converts present, non-None values for selected options with os.fspath(). The test checks that a Path passed as read_default_file reaches the initializer as a string.

Callers passing a pathlib.Path for server_public_key_path still receive a TypeError before connecting. The impact is limited to that option; add it to the conversion list before relying on path-like support for it.

Explanation

Issue #319 requires support for a pathlib.Path passed as read_default_file. Connection.__init__ applies os.fspath() to non-None C API string options before super().__init__. The added test verifies that read_default_file reaches the C initializer as str.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the stated scope. The source change handles path-like values at the C API boundary, including read_default_file and related connection path options. The added test directly covers issue #319. No unrelated behavior is shown.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Convert server_public_key_path before C initialization.

If a caller passes Path(...) as server_public_key_path, this loop leaves the value unchanged. The C initializer parses that option as a string and raises TypeError. Add server_public_key_path to the conversion list.
