Prepare first TanStack DB 1.0 release candidate - #2171
Remove the deprecated APIs in #1319 and prepare the existing Changesets workflow for the RC period. The migration guide covers this cleanup and breaking changes merged since DB 0.9.2 in September.
Mutation handlers and migration
Replace $synced with $hasPendingWrites and transaction.isPersisted.promise with transaction.when('settled'). Remove React dependency arrays and Solid query .data access. Live-query hooks replace isError with separate loading, crash, and sync-health signals.
Query Collection removes automatic refetch after mutation handlers. Each handler must await explicit refetch or write confirmed server data before it returns:
Without confirmation, optimistic changes revert to the previous synced rows when the handler settles. Polling, focus, reconnect, and external invalidation still operate independently. Remove { refetch: false }.
Query and Electric ignore legacy handler return values at runtime. Their types require Promise<void>. Electric handlers must await collection.utils.awaitTxId(txid) or awaitMatch() themselves.
Status and health replace old error utilities. reload() retries a failed first load or starts a new sync run after stopped sync.
Nested queries require include(), toArray(), or materialize(). Grouping without an aggregate requires groupKeys(). Pooling uses pool: pooledLiveQueries.
Query identity, source Collection stability, explicit SSR preparation, and Svelte hydration providers have new requirements.
String or number keys, grouped $key, SQLite WASM deployment, persisted readiness, and network-first rendering require migration in affected apps.
Custom sync adapters, manual transaction lifetimes, provisional hydration seeds, persisted metadata, and optional outbox codecs use updated contracts.
Examples and authored adapter skills use explicit mutation confirmation. Generated API references and the generated errors page stay outside this diff. The existing docs job creates their separate PR.
Metadata and cached queries
Published Collection rows protect $hasPendingWrites, $origin, $key, and $collectionId. Structured whole-row selections and source spreads retain source metadata. With several spreads, the last present source supplies metadata. A null spread contributes nothing.
A functional selection retains source metadata when it returns the source row directly. New functional objects receive output Collection metadata. Selected reserved names cannot change published attribution. Inline include values retain their selected shape.
Inline getKey and schema options stay bound until the mounted query identity changes. Ordinary renders do not rebuild the Collection. Independent DbClient callers under one cached identity must use the same option references. Conflicting configurations reject, including cached server reads and hydration replacement. Use distinct queryKeys for different row behavior. SSR streaming still requires a serializable queryKey.
Broader callback-input and literal-value discoveries remain open in the follow-up scope record. This PR does not claim complete metadata closure. The record preserves accepted laws, failing histories, affected files, and recovery instructions. It also records an existing main defect where a late include acquisition escapes a shared replay barrier. Its original oracle remains active and unchanged. A passing random campaign cannot close that retained counterexample.
Release process
The actual initial version command produces 23 packages at 1.0.0-rc.1, Query Collection at 1.5.0, and Offline Transactions at 1.2.0.
Query Collection and Offline Transactions accidentally reached 1.x before this RC. They retain stable version numbers and receive minor bumps, as requested. The Query minor deliberately includes automatic-refetch removal. Both minors require @tanstack/db@^1.0.0-rc.0. Upgrade DB with them. Applications staying on DB 0.15 must retain earlier adapter versions.
Maintainers continue to add ordinary Changesets:
A patch advances 1.0.0-rc.1 to 1.0.0-rc.1.1, then 1.0.0-rc.1.2.
A minor or major advances 1.0.0-rc.1.2 to 1.0.0-rc.2.
Stable packages retain normal version numbering.
The existing Version Packages PR and release workflow call the RC scripts. Publishing groups packages by exact version, reads that version independently of dist-tags, and restores temporary manifest changes. Stable packages publish to latest first. Candidates publish to rc. Both groups use existing authentication.
For stable 1.0, commit the result of pnpm changeset pre exit. The next Version Packages PR promotes candidates to 1.0.0. Exit applies pending Changesets and required dependent bumps.
Verification and release scope
The branch includes main through 95460bc875. All 26 oracle chunks received independent review before production repairs began. The release repair report records laws, finite histories, receiving paths, original failures, repaired results, hostile mutants, and limits.
A fresh frozen-lockfile install, clean full build, root test typecheck, and SQLite core typecheck pass.
Actual initial versioning, the versioned rebuild, and all 25 real tarballs pass. Tests cover 156 export targets and 50 negative controls.
Publisher tests pass 167 native cases and 38 controls. HTTP histories exercise exact-version lookup and explicit upload tags.
Cache repairs pass 6,556 core tests and 1,440 actual React tests. Offline repairs pass 87 receiving tests and preserve 287 core outcomes.
Public-output types pass 33 generated tests and 1,604 paired runtime tests. Guidance and error-doc commands pass their actual receiving tests.
The default nine-package size comparison saves 665 gzip bytes against merged main. DB grows 215 bytes. The typical app saves 276 bytes.
These suites overlap. Their counts do not form a total. Local tests use frozen source cuts recorded in the repair report. Public npm publication remains untested.
All eight installed runtime cells pass through actual ESM and CommonJS package imports. Both declaration formats pass handler admission with 117 candidates and 72 expected negative diagnostics each. Independent review repeats these results. The controlled registry serves actual release tarballs and explicitly cached external dependencies. Public npm publication remains untested.
Libraries that export inferred live-query factories or values still encounter declaration-emission failures. Exact main reproduces the same private-type diagnostics. The follow-up record preserves these original failures and their consumer impact. Handler-admission results do not establish full declaration portability. A separate public mutation-input/full-handler type issue also reproduces on main and remains recorded for follow-up. Required read metadata stays intact.
Pushed commit 86896a328 includes the final test corrections. The schema recorder correction preserves runtime behavior. SQLite retains 40 unrestricted random histories and adds 18 generated required histories per campaign. Its independent model, production driver, comparisons, and internal deadlines remain unchanged. Source-health retains its 60 random histories and adds generated required histories. Actual named replay commands and manifest controls exercise the new coordinates. Independent review accepts these corrections. CI passes at this head. GitHub reports the branch clean and mergeable. Main through 95460bc875 is fully merged. Release readiness applies to the agreed RC scope. The recorded broader classes remain open. CodeRabbit skipped the latest heads, so its historical review does not cover the latest semantic repairs. Its two historical reviews yield 13 primary items: 11 already resolved and two refuted. The latest covers 858b174a. The bounded production repairs and test corrections received independent review.
Broader Effect startup, correlated callback metadata, and literal-value failures remain preserved separately for follow-up. Main-imported expected-failure witnesses still reproduce persistence gaps in #2281. Earlier docs-checker failures outside the migration guide remain recorded. Native-provider coverage extends only to tests that actually run on this head.
The pull request prepares TanStack DB for its first 1.0 release candidate. It adds RC versioning and publishing scripts and removes deprecated transaction, row-metadata, mutation-handler, React hook, Solid accessor, and error APIs. It updates adapters, examples, tests, and migration documentation.
Changes: TanStack DB 1.0 RC transition
Layer / File(s)
Summary
RC versioning and publishing .changeset/*, package.json, scripts/version-packages.*, scripts/publish-packages.*, .github/workflows/*, CONTRIBUTING.md
Adds first-candidate, subsequent-RC, and RC-exit versioning and publishing scripts with tests. Adds release-version checks to PR and release workflows. Updates release guidance and peer-dependency ranges.
Removes Transaction.isPersisted and uses when('settled') for transaction completion. Mutation-handler types and implementations resolve with Promise<void> rather than forwarding handler results. Electric handlers explicitly await transaction IDs through collection utilities.
Removes automatic refetch after Query Collection mutation handlers and removes { refetch: false } coordination. Handlers explicitly refetch or write confirmed server data. Tests cover insert, update, and delete outcomes with no confirmation, refetch, or direct writes.
Row metadata and query attribution packages/db/src/virtual-props.ts, packages/db/src/collection/state.ts, packages/db/src/query/compiler/*, packages/db/src/query/live/*, packages/db/tests/query/virtual-row-fields-*
Replaces $synced with required $hasPendingWrites. Adds collection-root query compilation and metadata attribution for whole-row selections, spreads, projections, and functional selections. Removes DuplicateAliasInSubqueryError.
Framework hook APIs and migration support packages/react-db/src/*, packages/react-db/tests/*, packages/solid-db/src/useLiveQuery.ts, packages/solid-db/tests/*, docs/guides/migrate-to-1-0-rc.md, docs/framework/*
Removes React hook dependency-array forms and migrates query identity to derived identity or queryKey. Removes Solid’s .data getter so query data is read through the returned accessor. Updates framework tests and migration documentation.
Server rendering can accept conflicting row options for a cached query, and a typed test handler may fail compilation. Fix these and confirm the offline-transactions workspace build before merging. The remaining items are small documentation and hydration fixes.

Explanation
[#1319] requests removal of deprecated features across the codebase. The current head removes the reported deprecated APIs, including $synced, Transaction.isPersisted, mutation-handler return values, React dependency arrays, and Solid query .data. It updates affected production code, examples, documentation, and automated tests. The previous $synced use in ListsScreen.tsx is also removed.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is comprehensive and covers the requested changes, oracle evidence, verification results, release impact, known limits, and issue closure. It does not use the template headings or include the checklist and release-impact checkboxes verbatim, but the required information is present and the description is mostly complete.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR includes changes with no demonstrated connection to [#1319]. The collection-root metadata attribution compiler, projection and join metadata behavior, cache-option conflict admission, and their dedicated tests add new behavior rather than remove deprecated features. The RC versioning and publishing scripts, release workflows, and related tests also implement release automation, not deprecated-feature removal.
Resolution
Move the metadata attribution and RC release automation changes to separately linked work, or add directly linked coding requirements that establish their scope. Keep deprecated-feature removal, required compatibility updates, migration documentation, and supporting tests in this PR.

Each row aggregates the 14.4 scale/index/write-mode configurations of that query; per-configuration tables below.
Runner: node v24.8.0, linux 7.0.0-1017-azure, AMD EPYC 7763 64-Core Processor. Timings on shared CI runners are noisy; treat small deltas as indicative only.
The sqlite-core pipeline reports that this onInsert returns Promise<{}>. The RC handler type requires Promise<void>, so the test and typecheck cannot compile this collection configuration. Remove the returned object and keep the required asynchronous work awaited. As per coding guidelines, “Always provide the most precise return type.”

Refresh the Query Collection after a successful POST.
When the POST succeeds, this onInsert handler returns without updating the Query Collection. The optimistic todo then disappears at settlement. Await collection.utils.refetch() or apply the confirmed response with a direct write before returning. As per coding guidelines, “Validate Semantics: Ensure that your implementation actually does what you think it does.”

Remove the ! operator from the orderBy expression. It breaks the virtual-field test.
row.$hasPendingWrites is a query-builder reference proxy. The expression !row.$hasPendingWrites runs in JavaScript when the callback executes. The proxy is truthy, so the callback returns the constant false. The query then has no virtual field in its orderBy, and the index-suggestion warning stays empty.
The pipeline fails for this reason: the test expects a warning that contains "virtual" and receives an empty string. The old code passed the proxy row.$synced directly. Pass row.$hasPendingWrites directly.
IMPORTANT
Carefully review the code before committing. Ensure that it accurately replaces the highlighted code, contains no missing lines, and has no issues with indentation. Thoroughly test & benchmark the code to ensure it meets the requirements.

Fix the identity assertions. They contradict getPreparedLiveQueryIdentity and fail CI.
getPreparedLiveQueryIdentity does not include getKey or schema for a config object. Its comment says: "getKey and schema bind for this query identity". These options must not create a new identity.
Two assertions fail for this reason:
Lines 411-413: getPreparedLiveQueryIdentity(first) equals getPreparedLiveQueryIdentity(second). The pipeline reports this failure.
Lines 415-416: getLiveQueryHash(first) equals the hashes of second and third. These assertions fail next.
The test name "keys ... by reference" also states the opposite of the contract. Assert equal identities and hashes. A change of queryKey or the query must still change the hash.

Keep @tanstack/db available to the workspace build.
The workspace declares @tanstack/db@0.15.2, which does not satisfy the new ^1.0.0-rc.0 peer range. The reported builds cannot resolve @tanstack/db from offline-transactions, so the package build and dependent CI jobs stop with TS2307. Keep the RC peer range for published consumers, but add a workspace:* development dependency for builds before versioning. The reported implicit-any errors follow the unresolved imports.

Fix the new getKey identity test. It contradicts the identity contract and fails CI.
The test expects useLiveQuery to build a new Collection when only getKey changes. getPreparedLiveQueryIdentity excludes getKey and schema. Its comment says that "Inline options must not turn a normal framework render into a new Collection". The oracle in source-id-reuse-oracle.test.tsx states the same decision: options bind until the query or an explicit queryKey changes.
The pipeline fails at Line 3569 for this reason. The hook correctly returns the original Collection. Change the test to assert the retained Collection and the first getKey binding.

Check row options before returning a cached snapshot.
host.read(true) can load an existing result into this.seed. This return then skips the new _captureServerQuery check. For example, after a server preload with one getKey, a server-rendered hook with the same identity and a different getKey receives the first result instead of rejecting it. Server rendering does not subscribe, so the subscription check cannot catch the conflict. Check admission before consuming the cached snapshot. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Carry rowOptions over when hydrateLiveQuery replaces an active record.
hydrateLiveQuery builds a new record and copies existing?.sources to it. It does not copy existing?.rowOptions. This code was not changed in the PR, but the new rowOptions field makes the omission matter.
A local preload can create a record that holds getKey and schema claims. A later hydration of the same hash then replaces that record. The new record has rowOptions === undefined. In _assertLiveQuerySources, the option comparison needs both sides defined, so the next caller with different getKey or schema is not rejected. That caller then claims the options through record.rowOptions ??= rowOptions. This defeats the new reuse guard in the hydration-after-preload path.

Replace the two remaining isPersisted references.
isPersisted is not part of Transaction; settlement uses when('settled'). The active coverage text still references isPersisted at docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md:547 and docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md:1560. Replace both references with when('settled'). The reported lines 720 and 2051 do not contain these references.

Law: preserve the approved publication, cache claim, mutation confirmation,
restored settlement and published row contracts.
Reach: all declared states in the independently accepted release campaigns.
RED: unchanged implementation fails the versioned pre-repair comparisons.
GREEN: release owners and neighbors pass; clean locked build and all25packs pass.
Mutant: original and isolated wrong implementations fail intended comparisons.
Limits: installed API receivers and final CI remain pending; broader discoveries
are preserved on the follow-up snapshot with their unchanged laws.

First 1.0 release candidate
Remove the deprecated APIs in #1319 and prepare the existing Changesets workflow for the RC period. The migration guide covers this cleanup and breaking changes merged since DB 0.9.2 in September.
Mutation handlers and migration
Replace
$syncedwith$hasPendingWritesandtransaction.isPersisted.promisewithtransaction.when('settled'). Remove React dependency arrays and Solid query.dataaccess. Live-query hooks replaceisErrorwith separate loading, crash, and sync-health signals.Query Collection removes automatic refetch after mutation handlers. Each handler must await explicit refetch or write confirmed server data before it returns:
Without confirmation, optimistic changes revert to the previous synced rows when the handler settles. Polling, focus, reconnect, and external invalidation still operate independently. Remove
{ refetch: false }.Query and Electric ignore legacy handler return values at runtime. Their types require
Promise<void>. Electric handlers must awaitcollection.utils.awaitTxId(txid)orawaitMatch()themselves.The migration guide also explains these changes:
reload()retries a failed first load or starts a new sync run after stopped sync.include(),toArray(), ormaterialize(). Grouping without an aggregate requiresgroupKeys(). Pooling usespool: pooledLiveQueries.$key, SQLite WASM deployment, persisted readiness, and network-first rendering require migration in affected apps.Examples and authored adapter skills use explicit mutation confirmation. Generated API references and the generated errors page stay outside this diff. The existing docs job creates their separate PR.
Metadata and cached queries
Published Collection rows protect
$hasPendingWrites,$origin,$key, and$collectionId. Structured whole-row selections and source spreads retain source metadata. With several spreads, the last present source supplies metadata. A null spread contributes nothing.A functional selection retains source metadata when it returns the source row directly. New functional objects receive output Collection metadata. Selected reserved names cannot change published attribution. Inline include values retain their selected shape.
Inline
getKeyandschemaoptions stay bound until the mounted query identity changes. Ordinary renders do not rebuild the Collection. Independent DbClient callers under one cached identity must use the same option references. Conflicting configurations reject, including cached server reads and hydration replacement. Use distinct queryKeys for different row behavior. SSR streaming still requires a serializable queryKey.Broader callback-input and literal-value discoveries remain open in the follow-up scope record.
The actual initial version command produces 23 packages at
1.0.0-rc.1, Query Collection at1.5.0, and Offline Transactions at1.2.0.Query Collection and Offline Transactions accidentally reached 1.x before this RC. They retain stable version numbers and receive minor bumps, as requested. The Query minor deliberately includes automatic-refetch removal. Both minors require
@tanstack/db@^1.0.0-rc.0. Upgrade DB with them. Applications staying on DB 0.15 must retain earlier adapter versions.Maintainers continue to add ordinary Changesets:
1.0.0-rc.1to1.0.0-rc.1.1, then1.0.0-rc.1.2.1.0.0-rc.1.2to1.0.0-rc.2.The existing Version Packages PR and release workflow call the RC scripts. Publishing groups packages by exact version, reads that version independently of dist-tags, and restores temporary manifest changes. Stable packages publish to
latestfirst. Candidates publish torc. Both groups use existing authentication. For stable 1.0, commit the result of
pnpm changeset pre exit. The next Version Packages PR promotes candidates to1.0.0. Exit applies pending Changesets and required dependent bumps.Verification and release scope
The branch includes main through
95460bc875. All 26 oracle chunks received independent review before production repairs began. The release repair report records laws, finite histories, receiving paths, original failures, repaired results, hostile mutants, and limits.
Pushed commit
86896a328includes the final test corrections. The schema recorder correction preserves runtime behavior. SQLite retains 40 unrestricted random histories and adds 18 generated required histories per campaign. Its independent model, production driver, comparisons, and internal deadlines remain unchanged. Source-health retains its 60 random histories and adds generated required histories. Actual named replay commands and manifest controls exercise the new coordinates. Independent review accepts these corrections. CI passes at this head. GitHub reports the branch clean and mergeable. Main through95460bc875is fully merged. Release readiness applies to the agreed RC scope. The recorded broader classes remain open. CodeRabbit skipped the latest heads, so its historical review does not cover the latest semantic repairs. Its two historical reviews yield 13 primary items: 11 already resolved and two refuted. The latest covers858b174a. The bounded production repairs and test corrections received independent review.Broader Effect startup, correlated callback metadata, and literal-value failures remain preserved separately for follow-up. Main-imported expected-failure witnesses still reproduce persistence gaps in #2281. Earlier docs-checker failures outside the migration guide remain recorded. Native-provider coverage extends only to tests that actually run on this head.
Earlier evidence remains available in the explicit-refresh record, first review, and second review. Their results apply to their recorded heads.
Closes #1319.
