test(db): check Effects without skipInitial over a lagging source in Model D - #2277
Part of #2117: the skipInitial: false consumer item.
This change adds an effect-initial-rows consumer to Model D in packages/db/tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts. It is an Effect without skipInitial over a lagging source. It changes only tests and docs; no production code changes.
Law: an Effect without skipInitial passes the same initial gate, but the gate holds no callback. So its callback-visible result equals the query's current result at every checkpoint, before initial-query readiness too.
Authority:ARCHITECTURE.md, "Effects and initial readiness":
skipInitial "only decides whether the initial rows are delivered".
"Other ordinary initial/refinement requests keep their existing callback timing".
Observation: callback-visible row count and selected post IDs rebuilt from enter, exit, and update events, plus the inconsistent-event count and acquisition observations at trace checkpoints. Histories with a truncate or rekey record only whether the consumer acquired. Other row fields, including joined parent IDs, and callback timing within a step are unchecked.
Between a truncate and its settlement, the model leaves the row projection open; the metamorphic twin compares those checkpoints.
Histories: the same 156 as the skipInitial Effect lane: direct, lazy join, eager-root, and eager-default, each crossed with truncate and rekey disturbances.
Question for review: the gate sentence ("Every Effect passes its gate there too, with or without skipInitial") could also be read as holding initial rows until readiness. I followed the callback-timing sentence, which matches current production. If the other reading is intended, the model rule to change is expectedInitialRowsEffectObservation.
🔬 Oracle Coverage
Owner: "Includes and publication" → temporal oracle, Model D. The coverage-map row is updated. The evidence is appended to the review record docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/progressive-source-readiness.md ("Effect without skipInitial round").
Reach: declared with createOracleReach, and asserted after the bounded exhaustive cells.
Rows visible before initial-query readiness: 117 cells.
A row written after readiness is visible: 46 cells.
Truncate replay before settlement: 80 cells.
RED: none. This change adds coverage under an unchanged contract, and production already conforms.
GREEN: After merging main at 9cfa11fc7, pnpm exec vitest run --coverage.enabled=false tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts tests/query/includes-temporal.test.ts passes 1,084/1,084 tests, with no type errors: 1,048 oracle tests and 36 scenarios moved upstream. ESLint, Prettier, and pnpm lint:changed packages/db/tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts pass.
Mutants: each was run against all of Model D in src/query/effect.ts. Only the new cells reject either mutant. Every existing lane, including the skipInitial Effect lane, passes both.

152 of 156: 52 direct, 92 join, 4 eager-root, 4 eager-default. Assertion failures at checkpoints 1–5.
Ignore skipInitial: false, so initial rows are dropped (this.skipInitial = true)
The same 152 cells
Re-running both mutants after the merge gives the same 152 rejecting histories per mutant. The reach calibration also fails because no row is visible before readiness. All 878 existing Model D histories pass each mutant.
The 4 survivors are eager histories that start with source-ready. No row is visible before readiness there, so both mutants are equivalent within those histories.

Merge validation
Merged upstream main without rewriting published history. The coverage-map conflict preserves main's updates and adds the new consumer at the existing owner. The added model and existing history grammar are registered with declareOracle, as required by upstream #2278. The reach calibration now also checks that all 156 new-consumer grammar histories execute. Measured reach remains 117 / 46 / 80. The model, accepted law, histories, and production behavior are unchanged.
The default pnpm lint:changed exits 1 only for an inherited removed-budget notification: seed 271828 in the OP-SQLite replay-configuration unit test. Upstream #2278 moved that assertion into op-sqlite-driver.test.ts; its literal numRuns: 1 is a replay option, not a removed generated campaign. This PR changes neither that package nor its budgets. All oracle lint rules pass.
The documentation follow-up states these observation limits and open Effect boundaries in the coverage map, and adds JSDoc for the five touched model/driver/check functions. Compiling before and after with comments removed produces identical JavaScript. ESLint, Prettier, and targeted oracle lint pass. The coverage-map review thread is resolved.
✅ Checklist
I have tested this code locally with pnpm test. I ran the temporal oracle and its moved scenario file in full (1,084 tests pass), plus targeted oracle lint, ESLint, and Prettier. The default lint notification is explained below.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Expanded coverage for Effects without skipInitial, checking visible query results before initial-query readiness and after writes and truncate replays.
Added checks across direct, joined, eager-root, and eager-default query shapes.
Documentation
Updated contributor guidance to cover callback-visible rows for Effects without skipInitial.
Recorded source-readiness test coverage and validation results.
…Model D
Add an effect-initial-rows consumer to the includes temporal oracle. Without
skipInitial an Effect keeps its ordinary callback timing, so its
callback-visible result must equal the query's current result at every
checkpoint, before initial-query readiness too. The lane rejects an Effect
that holds or drops its initial deltas until readiness; no other Model D lane
did.

Summary
Model callback-visible rows packages/db/tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts
The model adds an Effect consumer without skipInitial. It tracks visible rows, inconsistent events, and acquisition counts, then compares these observations with expected results.
Trace reach and coverage packages/db/tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts
The traces include the new consumer across direct, join, eager-root, and eager-default-root shapes. Reach checks track pre-readiness rows, post-readiness writes, and truncate replay.
Coverage records docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/progressive-source-readiness.md, docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md
The documentation records the 156-history grammar, reach counts, mutant outcomes, validation results, and coverage boundaries. It also records an inherited OP-SQLite lint notification that this PR does not change.
TanStack/db#2118: Both address Effect readiness observations in Model D. This PR adds callback-visible row observations; it does not implement the shared adapter suite.

The Effect contract treats a present-to-present value change as an update. The join query returns id: user.id, but this consumer compares only row counts and post IDs. A rekey from parent 2 to 3 can therefore leave a stale parent ID undetected. This is a missing regression-coverage gap, not an established production failure.
Suggested fix
type InitialRowsEffectObservation = {
- visible: { rows: number; postIds: Array<number> } | null+ visible: {+ rows: number+ postIds: Array<number>+ parentIds: Array<number>+ } | null
inconsistentEvents: number
acquisitions: number
}
Add the join row IDs to both expectedInitialRowsEffectObservation and observeLaggingSourceConsumer, using facts.parentId for the expected join rows and row.id for the observed join rows.

Preserve main's coverage-map changes and the new effect-initial-rows consumer.
Declare the added model and its existing history grammar under the new oracle
registration rule. Calibrate that all 156 grammar histories actually execute.
Law: Ordinary initial Effect callbacks without skipInitial keep their timing,
including before initial-query readiness. Authority: live/ARCHITECTURE.md's
initial-readiness and callback-publication contracts.
Reach: 156 histories; declared states reached 117, 46 and 80 times.
RED: No production change; production already conforms. The unadapted merge
fails oracle/no-unit-test at the reach calibration. The calibration now uses
the declared grammar and verifies complete execution.
GREEN: Temporal oracle and moved scenario files pass 1084 tests. Targeted
oracle lint, ESLint and Prettier pass.
Mutant: Holding initial callbacks until readiness and forcing skipInitial each
fail 152 new histories at trace assertions plus the reach calibration. All 878
older Model D histories and four equivalent new histories pass. Both temporary
production mutations were removed.
Limits: Count, selected post IDs and event consistency at drained checkpoints.
Ordered/include/single-result Effects, framework hooks and real-provider
Effect receiving remain open. The inherited OP-SQLite removed-budget report
comes from upstream moving a replay-options unit assertion; no campaign is
reduced here. The appended progressive-source-readiness.md entry records the
self-review, commands, results, limits and lint report for this merge.
