test(db): reach every declared source-health state in every run - #2290
The source-health oracle failed in CI at random (#2287). The cause is a reach gap in the test, not CI timing. The product code has no defect. After this change, every run of the three source-health properties enters every state that they declare. The reach check now fails if a fixed history does not enter a declared state.
Why the check failed
source-health.history declares the states that its laws depend on. Two of them, markReady on a ready run and reload's insert of a kept row throws, occur only after the opt-in snapshot prefix. The generator chose a prefix by chance:
I simulated 20,000 campaigns of 60 runs. In 57 of them (0.29%), the generator never chose the opt-in snapshot prefix, so the reach check failed. The CI seed 727029764 gives this miss every time.
The local runs in the issue passed for a different reason. createOracleReach did not check reach when TANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_SEED was set without a path. Thus a seed-only run of the failed CI seed did not show the miss.
The change
oraclePropertyOptions(base, property, { examples }) now runs fixed examples first in every run. The examples come in addition to the base budget. Thus the random histories stay at 60, 60, and 100, and a path replay still runs one history.
createOracleReach(..., { fixedHistories }) makes the guarantee checkable. With fixedHistories: n, the reach check also fails for each declared state that the first n histories did not enter. Such a state is not a seed-independent guarantee, so a later random history does not satisfy the check.
The three source-health properties use these two options:
source-health.history runs each reach prefix as an example (9 examples).
source-health.on-demand runs each demand prefix as an example (7 examples).
source-health.lazy-demand runs each prefix and each driver option that a declared state needs (17 examples). The options include an Effect and a reload in a deferred first load. They also include a cleanup at each of the four reload notices, and a provider delete after a failed reload.
The lazy-demand options were eight positional values. They are now one named fc.record, so an example cannot apply a value to the wrong option.
Seed-only runs check reach
A seed alone reseeds the full campaign at its full budget. Thus a seed-only run now checks reach in createOracleReach and in runOracleCampaign. Only a path replay, which runs one recorded history, skips the check. This rule is a maintainer decision from the session that prepared this change.
An oracle for the reach machinery
The new oracle packages/db/tests/declared-reach-oracle.property.test.ts (oracle.declared-reach) owns these rules. Its grammar generates a ledger. A ledger has a run kind (ordinary, seed-only, or path replay), a minimum, and a number of fixed histories. It also lists the states that each history enters. Its model gives the expected counts, the states below the minimum, and the states that the fixed histories missed. Its drivers run createOracleReach, runOracleCampaign, and oracleRandomParameters under the environment of each run kind. The oracle is in staticOracleProperties and in the replay manifest.
🔬 Oracle Coverage
Owner: oracle.declared-reach, recorded in the "Oracle tooling" section of docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md. The three source-health properties keep their owners.
Law: an ordinary or seed-only run must not fail its reach check by chance when fixed examples cover a declared state. A path replay checks no reach. Authority: ORC-015, source-health oracle: reach check fails at random in CI #2287, and a maintainer decision on seed-only runs.
Reach: the fixed examples (9, 7, and 17) enter every declared state of the three source-health properties. fixedHistories checks this in every run. The declared-reach oracle declares 5 reach states. One fixed ledger per state enters it in every run, and fixedHistories: 5 checks this.
RED:
With the old generator, CI seed 727029764 misses the two states.
The declared-reach oracle fails on the parent's seed-only skip. The counterexample is a seed run with no histories.
It fails on the first commit, which had no fixedHistories.
It fails on the unchanged seed-only skip in runOracleCampaign.
GREEN:
source-health-oracle.test.ts passes 504/504 with no seed, and with the seeds 727029764, 1, 42, 271828, and 20261028.
The declared-reach oracle, the oracle-reach tests, and the replay manifest pass.
The full db suite passes with only seed 727029764 set: 375 files and 15,582 tests.
The Convex lazy-paging-abort-replay oracle passes.
pnpm lint:changed is clean, and the run-budget check reports no change.
Mutants:
Delete one history example. Every run fails and names 6 states.
Give the lazy loadingSubset example a settled first load. The run fails.
Let the examples replace random runs. The oracle rejects it.
Count one fixed history too many or too few. The oracle rejects it.
Let a campaign path replay check reach. The oracle rejects it.
Delete any one of the five fixed ledgers. Every run of the declared-reach oracle fails and names the state of that ledger.
For these three properties, a fast-check path recorded before this change now selects a different history. Any generator change does this, and the repository stores no such paths.
Seed-only runs in other packages now check reach. I measured only the db suite.
✅ Checklist
I have tested this code locally with pnpm test.
The local runs used the db package suite and the commands in the GREEN entry above.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
The source-health history property chose its reach prefixes by chance.
In about 0.3% of 60-run campaigns it never chose the one prefix that
reaches `markReady on a ready run` and `reload's insert of a kept row
throws`, so the reach check failed at random in CI (#2287). The
history, on-demand, and lazy-demand properties now run each reach
prefix, and each driver option a declared state needs, as fast-check
examples before the random histories. The examples alone reach every
declared state of the three properties.
createOracleReach skipped the check for a seed without a path. A seed
alone reseeds the full campaign, so the check now runs then too. That
is why the CI seed passed locally.
Closes#2287.

Review of #2287's fix found that the examples displaced random
histories (60 became 51), that each property wired them by hand, and
that the seed-only reach rule had no test.
oraclePropertyOptions now takes `examples` and runs them on top of the
base budget, so no random history is lost, and a path replay still runs
one history. createOracleReach takes `fixedHistories` and fails for a
declared state that the fixed examples did not enter, so the
examples-only reach of the three source-health properties is checked in
every run, not measured once. The lazy loadingSubset example needs only
an open first load, not a window.
declared-reach-oracle.property.test.ts (`oracle.declared-reach`) models
when the reach check runs and what fixed histories prove, and compares
createOracleReach and oracleRandomParameters with it. It fails on the
parent's seed-only skip and on the previous commit's missing
fixedHistories, and rejects examples that displace random runs and an
off-by-one fixed count.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
runOracleCampaign skipped the reach check for a seed-only run of its
replay prefix, which runs the full campaign. Only a path replay skips it
now, as for createOracleReach (maintainer decision). The declared reach
oracle drives the runner too: it failed on the unchanged runner and
rejects a mutant whose path replay checks reach.
The lazy-demand property takes its seven driver options as one named
record, so its fixed examples name each option instead of writing eight
positional values. The examples reuse LazyEnding, and the failedReload
comment says what the prefix does. The coverage map links #2289 for the
properties whose reach has not been measured.

Summary
Reach tracking and example parameters packages/db/tests/oracle-reach.ts, packages/db/tests/oracle-config.ts, packages/db/tests/oracle-campaign.ts
Reach checks now skip only path replays. The tracker can check states in a configured number of fixed histories. Oracle parameter helpers pass examples and add their count to the run budget outside path replay.
Main-history, on-demand, and lazy properties pass fixed examples and configure reach tracking for those histories. Lazy driver options are grouped into a record.
Reach behavior validation and documentation packages/db/tests/declared-reach-oracle.property.test.ts, packages/db/tests/oracle-replay-manifest.ts, docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md
A generated property test checks reach and run-parameter behavior for ordinary, seed-only, and path-replay runs. The replay manifest registers the property, and the coverage documentation describes the tested cases.
Older source-health failure paths may replay a different history. They can be replayed on the original revision.

Explanation
The title "test(db): reach every declared source-health state in every run" matches the main change. The PR makes fixed examples run in every run of the source-health properties, and it adds a fixedHistories check so each declared state is reached. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit form. It names the db package and the source-health oracle, which are the parts the change touches.

Explanation
The description follows the template. It has the Changes section, the Oracle Coverage section, the Checklist, and the Release Impact section. The Oracle Coverage section names the coverage-map owner (oracle.declared-reach, recorded in docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md) and gives the law, reach, RED and GREEN evidence, mutants, and limits. It explains the root cause and the change clearly. The Checklist and Release Impact boxes are marked. The description links the issues #2287, #2234, and #2289. Two points need attention. The description says a maintainer decision was made in a session, and it cites external issue numbers. Neither affects completeness. The description does not show a changeset, which the template expects only for published code. The Release Impact choice (docs/CI/dev-only) fits this change.

fast-check infers a property's argument types from the `examples`
parameter too. The generic return type gave every call an `examples`
field, which changed the inferred types in other packages' oracles
and failed lint in node-db-sqlite-persistence. Overloads now return
`examples` only for a call that passes them. `ReturnType` reads the
last overload, the one without examples.

The oracle declared five reach states and reached them only through
generated ledgers, the defect class of #2287. One fixed ledger per
state now runs first in every run, with `fixedHistories: 5`. Dropping
any one of them fails every run and names its state.

The source-health oracle failed in CI at random (#2287). The cause is a reach gap in the test, not CI timing. The product code has no defect. After this change, every run of the three source-health properties enters every state that they declare. The reach check now fails if a fixed history does not enter a declared state.
Why the check failed
source-health.historydeclares the states that its laws depend on. Two of them, markReady on a ready runandreload's insert of a kept row throws, occur only after the opt-in snapshot prefix.
