fix: restore controlled form controls after onChange - #116
React writes a controlled control's value and checked back after its change handlers run (restoreControlledState). Redact only synced them on re-render, so a handler that rejects an edit by not calling setState left the typed text, checkbox toggle, radio selection or select choice in the DOM.
What changes
The form syncs and hydration record each control's latest props. The control's Redact listeners mark the native input or change event, and listeners on the root and portal containers write the rendered value/checked back when it arrives, as React's root listener does. A radio also restores the rest of its group.
Restoring at the container lets every listener on the control and its ancestors read the edit first: real input runs microtasks between listeners, so restoring after the control's own listener hid the edit from an ancestor's onInput. A stopped or non-bubbling event never arrives, so it restores at once.
The restore waits for the handlers' own updates (microtask, or act's queue). Restoring synchronously moved the caret to the end on every accepted keystroke.
A checkbox, radio or select fires input before change, so with a change listener it restores after change; otherwise an onChange next to an onInput read the restored state.
Size
+240 to +334 B gzip on the client entries. Twelve go over budget; hydration=stub had 0 B headroom on main. CONTROLLED_RESTORE_SIZE_ALLOWANCE holds the measured increments and needs your approval.
Not covered
Same mechanism, unreported cases:
A controlled input with no handler (React keeps it read-only and warns).
A radio without onChange whose siblings have one.
Radios in a detached container get no change event (unchanged).
If a Redact handler stops propagation, the restore runs at once, so a native listener added later on the same control should read the restored value. Inferred from the event model, not reproduced.
Testing
Removing any part of the fix fails its tests in issue115-controlled-restore.test.tsx; three more guard against over-restoring (uncontrolled input, accepted radio, caret). issue115-controlled-restore.browser.tsx, added to the actions browser config, types and clicks for real: an onInput next to onChange, a checkbox with both, a later native listener, and an ancestor onInput that accepts the edit. They pass in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit; on the previous restore the last two fail in Chromium and WebKit. pnpm test:pr passes on Node 24.22.0.
I used Claude Code to write the fix and tests, and had it run the suites and a separate review pass. I've read and checked the changes.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Controlled inputs now restore their rendered values and checked states after change events when edits aren’t accepted, including after hydration. This covers text inputs, textareas, checkboxes, radio groups, and selects.
Event handlers can read the user’s edit before restoration, while accepted edits remain in place. Equivalent number-input formatting and caret position are preserved.
React writes a controlled control's value and checked state back after
its change handlers run. Redact only synced them on re-render, so a
handler that rejected an edit by not calling setState left the typed
text, checkbox toggle, radio selection or select choice in the DOM.
The restore runs after the element's last Redact listener for the
native input or change event, so onChange, onInput and their capture
forms all read the edit, also with real user input, which runs
microtasks between listeners. It is queued behind the handler's own
updates (microtask, or act's queue), so it reads the props they render
and keeps the caret of an accepted edit. Hydration records the props
too, and a radio restores the rest of its group.

Walkthrough
The change stores controlled form props on DOM elements and restores controlled values and checked states after input and change handlers. Restoration supports hydrated controls, root and portal containers, and stopped or non-bubbling events. Unit and browser tests cover these behaviors.

Explanation
Issue #115 requires a controlled input to restore its rendered value when onChange rejects an edit without a state update. The PR records rendered props, queues restoration after relevant Redact listeners and updates, and restores controlled input values. The tests cover rejected text edits, event ordering, hydration, caret preservation, and accepted or uncontrolled edits. The implementation satisfies the linked coding requirement.

These controls fire input before change. With onInput and onChange both
set, the restore ran after the input listener, and since real clicks
run microtasks between events, onChange read the restored state
instead of the click. A change listener now owns the restore for them;
an onInput alone still restores after input.

!change)` to account for relevant ancestor handlers as well as handlers on `el`,
so restoration waits until ancestor listeners have read the event value. Add a
browser test for a controlled input with `onChange` nested under a parent
`onInput` that accepts the edit and verifies it is not lost.
- Line 164: Update the listener ordering and restoration decision around the
`last === entry && !change` check so controlled inputs are restored when
propagation stops before the final listener. Base scheduling on the last
listener that actually runs, ensuring same-element listeners finish before
restoration; preserve the `!change` guard for checkboxes, radios, and selects.

The restore ran in a microtask after the control's last Redact listener,
and real input runs microtasks between listeners. So an ancestor's
onInput or a later native listener read the restored value, and an
ancestor that accepted the edit lost it. A capture listener that
stopped propagation also skipped the restore: the target's bubble
listener, which owned it, never ran.
The control's listeners now mark the native event, and listeners on the
root and portal containers restore once it reaches them, as React's
root listener does. A stopped or non-bubbling event restores at once,
since it never reaches a container. Listening on the container rather
than the document keeps the restore when a native listener on the
container stops propagation, and covers shadow roots.
A checkbox, radio or select with a change listener still restores after
change; with only onInput it restores after input.
