  • Each app (server, desktop, web UI, mobile) is its own build with its own lifecycle, so its telemetry should describe that build rather than whichever server it happens to talk to.
  • The hosted web UI ships PR previews and nightly builds independently of any server, and they were indistinguishable from stable production in traces.
  • Mobile preview builds reported preview, which is not a well-known deployment.environment.name, so they did not line up with staging in backends such as Datadog env.
  • Release channel has no semantic convention attribute, and filtering nightly from stable should not require parsing versions.

Walkthrough

Telemetry resources now report release-channel and deployment-environment attributes across shared Node, desktop, server, mobile, and web code. The changes also add service-version reporting and configure web preview builds to identify their release channel.

Changes: Telemetry release identity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared release attribute rules
packages/shared/src/releaseResource.ts, packages/shared/src/releaseResource.test.ts, packages/shared/src/observability.ts, packages/shared/src/observability.test.ts, packages/shared/package.json, docs/operations/observability.md, docs/fork/0026-telemetry-says-which-app-sent-it.md
Shared code derives release channel and deployment environment from build inputs, then applies nonempty operator overrides. The docs describe the attributes and how app builds report them.
Desktop and server resources
apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopObservability.ts, apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopObservability.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendConfiguration.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendConfiguration.test.ts, apps/server/src/config.ts, apps/server/src/config.test.ts
Desktop and server resource creation supplies the service version. Desktop tests cover exported release attributes, and WSL configuration forwards OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES.
Web resource and preview configuration
apps/web/src/observability/clientResource.ts, apps/web/src/observability/clientResource.test.ts, apps/web/src/observability/clientTracing.ts, apps/web/src/vite-env.d.ts, apps/web/vite.config.ts, .github/workflows/web-preview.yml
The web client builds its tracing resource from app, release, surface, instance, and browser inputs. Vite exposes VITE_RELEASE_CHANNEL, which the preview workflow sets to preview.
Mobile release identity
apps/mobile/src/features/observability/tracing.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/observability/tracing.test.ts
Mobile tracing maps development, preview, and production variants to environment and release-channel attributes. Tests also check that unknown variants omit those attributes.

Telemetry identity appears functional, but the guides could lead operators to use the wrong mobile filters or expect UI and mobile overrides that do not work. Correct the guidance before relying on it.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Changes OTLP resource attributes across all clients and may break dashboards that assumed old environment labels; preview channel is build-time only and WSL now forwards operator OTEL attributes.

Overview
Telemetry now tags each surface with its own build identity via shared releaseResourceAttributes: t3code.release.channel (dev, stable, nightly, preview) and matching deployment.environment.name (development, production, staging for preview), with OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES still able to override on server/desktop.

Server, desktop main process, web UI, and mobile all wire this in instead of ad hoc dev/production labels. Node processes pass package version into nodeProcessResourceAttributes; the web client uses new clientTracingResource (including browser attributes) and reads VITE_RELEASE_CHANNEL so PR previews report staging/preview without changing APP_VERSION for server skew checks. Vercel web preview sets that build env; mobile maps Expo variants to the same channel/environment pairs. WSL backend forwarding adds OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES.

Docs and tests cover the new attributes and mappings.

How each process identifies itself

Every process describes its own build. Channel comes from the version string (cliReleaseChannelOf), and the environment follows the channel.

Version / build t3code.release.channel deployment.environment.name
Dev build (dev runner, Vite dev server, desktop dev run) dev development
X.Y.Z stable production
X.Y.Z-nightly.YYYYMMDD.N nightly production
X.Y.Z-preview.YYYYMMDD.N preview staging
Process service.name service.version Identity source How to override
Server (standalone, npx t3) t3code-server server package version version rule above; dev when run under the dev runner OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES=deployment.environment.name=staging,t3code.release.channel=preview in the server's environment
Server launched by desktop t3code-server server package version same rule inherits the desktop app's environment, so set it where desktop is launched. WSL backends receive it through WSLENV
Desktop main process t3code-desktop app version when packaged, else desktop package version same rule OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES in the environment desktop starts with
Web UI (browser, app.t3.codes, desktop window) t3code-web APP_VERSION same rule on its own build; Vercel PR previews build with VITE_RELEASE_CHANNEL=preview build time only: APP_VERSION and VITE_RELEASE_CHANNEL=preview. The server does not rewrite it
Mobile t3code-mobile Expo app version build variant: development gives development/dev, preview gives staging/preview, production gives production/stable build time only, through APP_VARIANT

Notes:

  • An operator value wins per key: overriding deployment.environment.name leaves the derived t3code.release.channel in place, and the reverse. Empty values fall back to the default.
  • APP_VERSION stays a plain release version on previews because the UI compares it with the server's version to detect skew.
  • Linking a UI session to its server goes through trace context (shared trace IDs), not resource attributes, so a stable UI talking to a dev server reports production while the server reports development, and both are correct.

- Line 55: Update the telemetry documentation to describe the mobile attribute
mappings: the production build variant maps to channel stable, and the preview
build variant maps to environment staging. Clarify these values for
deployment.environment.name and t3code.release.channel so readers use the mapped
values when filtering.

Review comments at @docs/operations/observability.md:
- Around line 629-638: Update the observability documentation’s override claim
to apply only to the server and desktop main process: specify that
OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES can independently override deployment.environment.name
and t3code.release.channel there, and clarify that the UI and mobile app use
build inputs and do not receive or read this variable.
