config/fly-neuron-counts.json carried canonical_url pointing at www.virtualflybrain.org/data/fly-neuron-counts.json. That URL can never resolve: /data/ on virtualflybrain.org is a routed namespace, handled like /reports/ with the path segment read as a dataset id, so a static file there is unreachable however the site is built. Verified — /docs/concepts/nblast/ returns 200 while /data/fly-neuron-counts.json returns 404.

Nothing fetched it, so this is inert. It was also false, in a file whose entire purpose is that its contents can be trusted — which is the kind of small untruth this data was created to remove.

The header now states the arrangement plainly: this file is the only copy that is read, it ships in the image, there is deliberately no published mirror, and the prose article is for humans and for citation rather than a data source. One copy, no drift, curators edit the repo file.

Pairs with VirtualFlyBrain/VFB2, which drops the mirror file and the article's dead link.
