Move DER battery storage into its inverter. It can coexist with the proprietary battery registers.

I also realized I made a mistake before with naming: DER is storage, not battery, and it's reporting SoC not SoE. This PR also seeks to correct that mistake as part of moving it into the inverter device.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • SunSpec model 713 State of Charge readings are provided on the inverter, with values from 0% to 100%. Sensors are enabled by default when the initial reading is nonzero.
  • Changes
    • Separate DER battery devices are no longer created. Related legacy devices and unsupported entities are cleaned up, and eligible existing State of Energy entities can be migrated to State of Charge entities.
    • Diagnostics and documentation now describe DER storage readings and distinguish inverter-level State of Charge from proprietary battery data.

📝 Walkthrough

SunSpec model 713 storage blocks are now held and polled by inverter instances. State of Charge sensors and diagnostics read those blocks. Setup migrates legacy DER entities and removes matching legacy DER devices.

Changes: DER Storage on Inverters

Layer / File(s) Summary
Inverter DER storage lifecycle
custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/hub.py, tests/test_der_storage.py
Inverters initialize discovered model 713 blocks and retain successful reads. Polling refreshes those blocks when listeners are registered. The separate DER battery class and hub read paths are removed. Tests cover initialization and listener-dependent reads.
DER sensors and diagnostics
custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/sensor.py, custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/diagnostics.py, custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/const.py, tests/test_der_storage.py, tests/test_diagnostics_device_keys.py
Setup registers a State of Charge sensor for each inverter storage block. Its default-enabled state requires an implemented, nonzero initial value, and it is available for values from 0 through 100. State of Health and status sensor classes are defined but not registered. Diagnostics enumerate storage blocks by inverter and index.
Legacy DER migration and documentation
custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/__init__.py, tests/test_der_storage.py, COMPARISON_WITH_CORE.md, README.md
Setup migrates legacy State of Charge entity IDs, removes legacy State of Health and status entities, and removes matching legacy DER devices when current inverters report DER blocks. Tests cover migration and cleanup. Documentation describes DER storage capacity and the inverter-level model 713 reading.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 362ed

Model 713 storage now lives on the inverter, and legacy State of Charge entities are migrated to the new IDs without orphaning or duplicating them. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed changes.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 362ed

The new migration can modify legacy storage entities outside the connection being set up when an inverter reports a matching identity. Storage identities can also change after partial initialization failures recover. Exposure is limited to matching legacy entities and requires control of, or incorrect identity reporting by, a configured endpoint.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new migration derives legacy entity identifiers from endpoint-reported inverter identity and mutates globally matching registry entries without checking their config-entry ownership. A controlled endpoint that reports another inverter's model and serial and successfully supplies model 713 data can therefore cause matching legacy sensors from another connection to be removed or renamed. The identity scheme predates the PR; the destructive migration consumer is new.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Persistent sensor identities depend on the ordinal of successfully initialized blocks. If block 1 fails and block 2 succeeds, block 2 receives storage_1; after a later setup successfully reads both blocks, storage_1 represents block 1. This breaks stable ownership attribution for existing entity history and configuration. Retaining original scan IDs makes the initial legacy lookup correct but does not stabilize subsequent sensor identities.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new cross-entry mutation path reaches matching legacy DER sensor registry entries within the same Home Assistant instance. It requires setup against an endpoint reporting the target identity and successfully read storage blocks. It does not establish arbitrary registry access, credential exposure, or direct inverter-write authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A controlled configured Modbus endpoint can supply a victim inverter's model and serial. The resulting uid_base selects the victim's legacy DER identifiers globally; migration removes matching SoH/status entries and renames the SoC entry if its destination is absent. The source shows no ownership validation between endpoint identity and these privileged registry mutations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Device cleanup enumerates devices associated with the current config entry and matches detected legacy identifiers. Entity migration instead uses global platform/domain/unique-ID lookup. Its destination collision guard protects against duplicate renaming, not unauthorized removal of a matching legacy entity.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Listener removal and empty-list gating limit unnecessary storage polling. Refresh errors still fail the shared config-entry update; equivalent DER error propagation existed before the ownership move, so shared failure scope alone is not an introduced security concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind migration mutations to verified config-entry ownership, retain stable per-block identity across partial failures, and explicitly define recovery for interrupted migration before destructive cleanup.

I somehow got confused and called the sunspec 714 DER storage SoC value "SoE" because that's what it is in the proprietary battery registers. This is incorrect, it should have been SoC from the beginning. It's "Storage" and not "Battery" in this context.

- Line 275: Preserve each model 713 block’s original scan ID when
`init_der_storage` retains successfully initialized blocks; do not derive legacy
`DERB1` mapping from the retained list position. Update the migration mapping to
use that original ID, and add a test where block 1 fails and block 2 succeeds,
verifying `DERB1` remains associated with block 1 rather than block 2’s sensor.
