This PR tries a new approach to dealing with resetting battery energy. In the past I had always favored not altering the data returned over modbus, but in the case of battery energy it might actually be more appropriate to present altered data.

Some batteries (LG, BYD) do not have lifetime energy counters. SolarEdge's cloud platform appears to simulate lifetime values by summing delta energy, so lost telemetry leaves the totals incomplete. This is not revenue grade metering and we don't want user to have to rely on cloud for this, although a comparison to the cloud values would be interesting.

Whit this PR battery energy sensors here will try to do the same: it adds each increase in the register to its own running total, so the total never goes down. A register that goes backwards is treated as a new reference point and adds nothing. This also works for batteries with true lifetime counters.

This replaces a previous approach where we would still treat the sensor as lifetime and give the user an option to allow resetting, but did not alter the values modbus returned. The delta values for energy counters hide the actual values read over modbus. Options for allow battery energy to reset and cycles to reset are made obsolete and have been removed. They're not being removed from the config entry yet though, so an easy downgrade is possible if this turns out to be a bad idea.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Changes
    • The option to enable or disable battery energy resets has been removed. Battery rating adjustment remains available.
    • Battery reset cycles now require at least 2 consecutive lower readings before the lower value is accepted as a reset. Existing settings below 2 are updated, with a notice showing the old and new values.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Battery import and export totals accumulate increases in readings and restore the total and reading baseline after a restart.
    • Missing, zero, and invalid readings are ignored. Lower readings do not reduce totals; after the configured consecutive readings, the baseline is updated without adding energy.

Calculate differences between battery energy readings and preset that as the sensor value for battery charge or discharge energy. This will hide the actual values read over modbus, but in favor of trying to present something closer to lifetime energy that the hardware can't provide.

📝 Walkthrough

Battery import and export sensors now accumulate positive register deltas and restore the total and prior raw reading. Reset permission was removed. Reset-cycle settings require at least two polls, and migration updates older entries with lower values.

Changes: Battery energy handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared battery energy accumulator
custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/sensor.py, tests/test_sensor_energy_accumulators.py
Import and export sensors use shared delta accumulation. The sensors ignore missing, zero, and all-ones readings; add increases; and preserve the total when readings decrease. They rebaseline after the configured number of consecutive lower readings. Restore data includes the prior raw reading. Tests cover accumulation, decreases, and restoration.
Reset-cycle configuration and migration
custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/const.py, custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/config_flow.py, custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/hub.py, custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/__init__.py, custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/strings.json, custom_components/solaredge_modbus_multi/translations/*.json, tests/test_migrate_battery_energy_reset_cycles.py, tests/test_hub_options.py, tests/test_options_flow_routing.py, COMPARISON_WITH_CORE.md
The reset-permission option was removed, and the reset-cycle default and minimum are now two. Migration updates older entries when the value is below two and creates an issue with the old and new values. Translations, tests, and comparison text reflect the configuration changes.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9d5e4

Battery energy totals can still jump by a large amount after a sequence of lower and invalid readings. Home Assistant keeps such a jump permanently in its statistics, and this PR removes the option that let users reset it. Clear the lower-reading counter when an invalid reading arrives before merging. The repair notice collision is minor: when several entries are affected, only one notice is kept.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9d5e4

The change is confined to battery-energy reporting and adds no new device-control authority. The main concern is recovery: after a battery counter resets, reverting to the previous implementation may leave restored readings stuck under the previous default settings.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new stored aggregate is not semantically interchangeable with the old raw-counter reference. After a confirmed battery reset, the aggregate can exceed the current register. If the common native_value field is restored on downgrade, the old implementation assigns it to _last and, with reset permission disabled by default, ignores subsequent lower readings until the register catches up. Retaining configuration keys does not convert this state back. Entries that already allowed resets have a recovery path; actual downgrade parsing remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Control of energy-register responses could affect the corresponding battery totals and their persisted sensor state. Control of a shared Modbus endpoint could affect multiple batteries read through that endpoint. The examined transformation provides no additional device-write authority or credential access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The routed public-entrypoint changes are configuration fields and internal properties, not new network endpoints. Configuration validation and the hub clamp enforce the minimum reset threshold; removing reset permission changes reporting policy rather than granting device-control privileges.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Forward restoration preserves the relationship between total and raw reference in one record, but rollback requires a semantic policy once those values diverge. Retaining the obsolete reset option helps previously enabled entries; it does not by itself make the new aggregate a valid old raw reference.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit correction and downgrade procedure for accumulated totals. Where device characteristics support it, consider quarantining implausible upward deltas rather than permanently accepting them. This is telemetry-integrity hardening, not a verified new attack path.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Give each migrated entry its own repair issue ID.

If two config entries have reset-cycle values below two, both migrations create battery_energy_reset_cycles_changed under the same domain. The issue registry identifies issues by domain and issue ID, so it cannot retain a separate warning and old value for each entry. Include config_entry.entry_id in the issue ID. 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the lower-reading count after an invalid poll.

If a lower reading is followed by None, zero, or the sentinel value, _process_data() returns without clearing _lower_polls. A later lower reading can then trigger a rebase even though the lower readings were not consecutive. If those readings are transient faults, the next normal reading adds most of the raw lifetime counter to the total. Clear _lower_polls on the invalid-reading path, and test a lower–invalid–lower sequence.
