fix(security): never print full partner API key in bootstrap script (code-scanning #13-#15) - #243
Addresses code-scanning alerts 13, 14, 15 (py/clear-text-logging-sensitive-data) in gateway/scripts/partner_api_key_bootstrap.py. Adds --key-file (0600, O_EXCL, checked before minting); stdout shows only a masked key in human, --json (api_key_masked) and --key-only modes. Docs updated. Breaking: pipelines reading the key from stdout must use --key-file. Tests: 31 passed, 1 skipped. Alerts not dismissed.
Note
Medium Risk
Breaking CLI contract for key provisioning and touches credential-handling in an operator bootstrap path; behavior is well-tested but existing pipelines must adopt --key-file.
Overview Stops leaking minted partner API keys from partner_api_key_bootstrap.py by requiring --key-file and never emitting the full secret on stdout or stderr (human, --json, or --key-only).
The secret is written only to --key-file using an exclusive create at mode 0600before minting; failed mint or write paths clean up the reserved file. --json stdout carries wallet/key identifiers and key_file only; --key-only prints the file path. Bootstrap HTTP errors no longer echo response bodies.
Breaking: automation that piped jq .api_key from stdout must read the key from --key-file instead. Docs for CI smoke provisioning and operator bootstrap are updated accordingly; tests cover no-leak output, file semantics, and doc recipe contracts.

Walkthrough
The bootstrap CLI now requires --key-file and writes the minted API key to a newly created mode-0600 file. It omits the key from stdout and stderr; JSON and human-readable output contain non-secret identifiers and the file path. The CLI removes the reserved file after specified failures and reports revocation guidance if writing fails after provisioning. Documentation and tests now describe and check this workflow.
The identified key-file creation and write failures no longer leave the reported handoff problems. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 67527
The CLI substantially reduces accidental secret exposure. However, the updated instructions can consume an attacker-precreated file after provisioning correctly refuses it. On a shared host without fail-fast shell behavior, this can substitute the credential used by the smoke test or stored in the repository secret.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The documented consumers do not fail closed when credential production fails. A local user able to precreate the predictable shared temporary filename can make exclusive creation abort, after which a normal shell without errexit still reads the preexisting file into CI_SMOKE_AGENT_KEY or passes it to gh secret set. A valid attacker-owned API key can therefore replace the intended smoke-test identity; arbitrary content can replace the configured repository secret. The CLI itself correctly refuses the path and does not mint a key on this branch.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified attack requires local access to the operator's shared temporary directory, not merely remote API access. Its demonstrated design scope is the credential selected for the smoke test or the repository secret targeted by the documented gh command. Exercising the smoke test successfully requires an injected key valid for the configured API; replacing the repository secret can also cause failure with invalid content.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A precreated readable amw-ci-smoke-key.PID file survives the CLI's existing-path refusal. Because the recipes do not explicitly stop on that refusal, downstream commands can treat attacker-controlled bytes as the newly provisioned credential. When identity metadata is absent, the smoke test discovers wallet and key identity using the supplied credential, which does not establish provenance from the attempted bootstrap operation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The producer correctly refuses an existing destination before provisioning and requests mode 0600 for files it creates. Tests assert unchanged preexisting contents and skipped minting. Those controls protect producer-side creation but do not authenticate a preexisting file subsequently opened by an unchecked shell consumer. The partner handoff guide separately uses a private mode-0700 directory.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Normal delivery handles short writes and fsync, and handled write errors attempt descriptor closure and file removal. Recovery is narrower than the helper's “any error” wording: interruption during delivery and final-close failures are outside that cleanup handler and can leave a reserved path that blocks reuse. Remote credential recovery remains an operator responsibility; this is not evidence of new secret disclosure.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use a newly created private temporary directory with a not-yet-existing key-file path inside it, and explicitly require successful provisioning before reading or importing the file. A failed-producer recipe test should establish that neither environment export nor repository-secret replacement occurs after destination refusal.

Remove the masked-key derivation so no stdout/stderr output derives from
the minted secret. stdout carries identity fields only (key id, wallet
ids, key prefix); the secret flows solely to --key-file. Align the docs
recipes and doc-contract test with the new output, and generate test
fixtures at runtime.

Code-scanning alerts #13–#15 (clear-text logging): the bootstrap script never prints api_key or bootstrap_key. The human, --json (api_key_masked) and --key-only modes print only masked or ID values. The new --key-file writes the key with 0600 and O_EXCL, and is checked before minting.
Docs (partner-api-key-bootstrap.md, constant-test-loop.md) and doc-contract tests are updated. Local: 6072 passed, 103 skipped. CI: all green, BEHIND main, mergeable.
Breaking change: pipelines that read the key from stdout must switch to --key-file. Please call this out in the CHANGELOG, which the diff does not touch.
Assert that an existing key-file path causes no provisioning POST.
main() currently rejects the path before calling provision(), but this test does not check that ordering. The fake client can complete provisioning if the guard moves later, and the test can still pass on the later "already exists" error. Reuse a pre-created fake client and assert client.posts == [].

Delta since 86c7c8d: a plain merge of main (be3d81f), the remerge-diff is empty, and pytest gives 6072 passed, 103 skipped.
FAIL because five unaddressed threads report that the one-time key can be lost:
bootstrap.py:315 (Cursor, High): the key is minted before _write_key_file. If the parent directory is missing, or the create fails, the secret is lost.
bootstrap.py:315 (CodeRabbit, Major): without --key-file, an active key is minted that nobody can retrieve.
bootstrap.py:46 (Minor): a short os.write isn't checked, and a partial file isn't removed.
docs/partner-api-key-bootstrap.md:32 (Major): there's no mkdir -p step for $HOME/.config/amw.
docs/constant-test-loop.md:122 (Major): rm -f "$KEY_FILE" runs even if gh secret set failed.
Also still open from r22: the breaking change isn't in the CHANGELOG.

Codex read-only review of #243 at ede288a. Fixed: full key no longer printed in clear text (CodeQL clear-text logging); test fixtures are runtime-generated. Still open:
partner_api_key_bootstrap.py:287 vs :315: key is minted in provision() before _write_key_file() exclusively reserves the output path; the earlier existence check is not a reservation, so a collision loses the one-time secret.
partner_api_key_bootstrap.py:44: single os.write() with no full-write loop, no fsync, no cleanup on write/close error; a partial key file can remain.
partner_api_key_bootstrap.py:88: SystemExit still includes resp.text[:500].
partner_api_key_bootstrap.py:317: --key-only without --key-file mints a key and discards its only copy (documented, but unsound; should require --key-file or refuse).
docs/partner-api-key-bootstrap.md:32: example writes under ~/.config/amw without creating it; no mkdir -p -m 700 step (and note -m applies only to the last dir).
…ites
- reserve key file with O_CREAT|O_EXCL 0600 before minting; unlink on mint failure
- short-write loop, fsync, close+unlink on write error
- drop response body from SystemExit; report status only
- --key-only requires --key-file (argparse error)
- docs: mkdir -p -m 700 ~/.config/amw before writing key

The original blocker is fixed in the script. d9941fd reserves the key file with O_EXCL 0600 before minting and unlinks it on mint failure. Writes loop until complete, then fsync, and the file is unlinked on error. Response bodies are no longer echoed, and --key-only now requires --key-file. Gateway tests exit 0 and CI is 23 pass, 0 fail.
Still blocking: gateway/docs/constant-test-loop.md:121-122 runs gh secret set ... < "$KEY_FILE" then rm -f "$KEY_FILE" unconditionally. If storing the secret fails, the only copy of the minted key is deleted, which is the same key-loss class as before. Use gh secret set ... && rm -f.
Four unresolved, non-outdated CodeRabbit threads remain: the docs mkdir for ~/.config/amw (partner-api-key-bootstrap.md:34), the one above, a minor one at partner_api_key_bootstrap.py:354 and a trivial one in test_constant_test_loop.py:702. Fix or answer each.
…e test values
Delete KEY_FILE only after gh secret set succeeds; require --key-file before minting; print key_id on key-file write failure; use secrets/uuid4 in new tests.
