fix: preserve TLS and AUTH settings in Redis Cluster health checks - #20
Health checks connect with only ip, port, omitting the TLS settings used by normal Redis Cluster requests. A recovered TLS endpoint can therefore remain marked unhealthy. On password-protected endpoints, probes also need AUTH; an unauthenticated PING returning false, NOAUTH must not count as recovery.
Changes
Run probes in workers, where new() registers the latest local configuration for each cluster name. Start a one-second timer lazily and retain init() as a compatible no-op.
Reuse connect_opts and check_auth before PING. Keep configuration references and passwords in worker-local memory; shared health records remain numeric failure counters keyed by cluster name and node address.
Coordinate probes through the existing lock dictionary. The fair lock gives waiting workers a turn even when another worker retains stale credentials. Ignore results after the probe lease changes.
Allow a worker encountering an existing failure record to take over probing. Retain the original business topology caches and refresh_slots cleanup behavior; the unrelated cleanup fix is excluded.
Tests
A fresh full make test run passes:
20 deterministic worker-state and interleaving cases, including in-place credential updates, fair probe scheduling, exception logging, and recovery on a later probe.
102 Test::Nginx assertions: 84 existing sanity assertions and 18 assertions across nine real Redis health-check cases.
The health cases cover plain TCP, verified TLS, AUTH, TLS with AUTH, rejected passwords/server names, updated credentials, unauthenticated PING, and adoption of an existing failure record. Worker scheduling races are tested with simulated workers.
Verified with Redis 6.2.24 and OpenResty 1.29.2.4 in an isolated container.

Summary
Configure and run health checks lib/resty/rediscluster.lua
Client creation records connection settings for probes. Health checks track pending nodes, coordinate probes with per-node locks, protect records from stale results, and start worker timers on demand.
Validate worker and probe behavior t/health_check.lua, Makefile
Mocked tests cover worker state, probe coordination, timing, configuration changes, and failure handling. Make targets provide separate unit and health-test commands.
Exercise health checks with Redis fixtures t/redis-health-fixtures.sh, t/lib/health_check_integration.lua, t/health-check.t, t/README.md, .gitignore
Redis fixtures provide plaintext, TLS, and authenticated listeners. Integration cases cover probe failures, recovery, credential rotation, and takeover. The test README documents setup and requirements, and .gitignore excludes the fixture directory.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 30fed
After an in-place password rotation, health checks can keep a recoverable Redis node marked unhealthy. Synchronize probe credentials before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8eed1
Health probes now preserve configured TLS and authentication controls. However, the new worker-local configuration cache retains passwords without an explicit retirement lifecycle. This extends credential residency, although extracting those credentials would still require access inside the worker’s trust boundary.
Retained concerns
Low · security · observed: The new module-owned health_configs table retains the latest AUTH value for every registered cluster name without an expiry or removal path. Registration occurs even before client initialization succeeds. Probe success and failure-record expiry remove pending work, not the credential snapshot, so a short-lived or abandoned client can leave its password reachable until same-name replacement or worker exit. Worker-local storage limits exposure, but the credential lifecycle is longer than the client or health-record lifecycle.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new credential-retention exposure covers the latest registered AUTH value for each cluster name constructed within a worker. Exploiting that retained state requires worker-local code execution or process-memory access; no new externally reachable credential-read interface is established by the inspected change. Production tenant isolation and cluster-name uniqueness are not demonstrated by the supplied callers.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A later worker-memory disclosure could expose a password retained after its originating client and health work have ended. This is an introduced secret-residency extension, not evidence of a verified disclosure or privilege escalation. Keeping settings out of shared memory is important counterevidence against broader cross-worker credential exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Probe endpoints originate from recorded client connection failures; probes use the latest locally registered settings for their cluster name. The outbound path preserves configured TLS options, runs AUTH before PING when configured, and rejects false PING responses. Test declarations exercise verified TLS, incorrect server names, rejected passwords and unauthenticated NOAUTH responses.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Stale-result checks improve containment but do not make failure-count validation and deletion transactional against other workers. The base already deleted successful health records unconditionally, so this residual race is not an introduced concern. Mocked interleavings cover changes during network I/O, while the documentation explicitly limits what simulated workers prove about process-level behavior.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define an explicit owner and retirement policy for credential-bearing health snapshots, preserving recovery for active clients while releasing abandoned entries. Document this separately from failure-counter expiry and the existing cluster-name identity contract.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#19] requires health checks to use the configured connection options. run_health_check calls red:connect(node.ip, node.port, config.connect_opts), and _M.new stores the worker-local connect_opts. The probe calls check_auth before PING, so AUTH failures do not count as recovery. Worker-local configuration, probe leases, and failure-counter checks prevent stale probe results from changing current health state. The added tests cover TLS, AUTH, NOAUTH, credential changes, and failure-record takeover.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The timer changes, worker-local configuration, probe coordination, stale-result checks, and failure-record takeover directly support health checks for [#19]. The Makefile, deterministic tests, integration tests, fixtures, and test documentation support verification of this behavior. The production diff does not show an unrelated topology-cache or refresh_slots cleanup change.
Full details: Security Check
Explanation
PASS. No issues found in any required category: (1) production logs contain only node addresses, failure counts, and non-secret error text; they do not serialize auth or connect_opts. (2) The change adds no database persistence. (3) No mutating HTTP endpoints are changed. (4) No parent-child resource access is changed. (5) Health probes pass connect_opts unchanged; no insecure TLS flag inversion is introduced. (6) No shared platform resource deletion or binding logic is changed. (7) The repository contains no $env:// or $secret:// reference mechanism. Credentials remain worker-local in health_configs and are not placed in shared memory or logs.
Full details: E2e Test Quality Review
Explanation
Blocking concurrency defect remains. _M.new stores health_configs only in the worker-local table at lib/resty/rediscluster.lua:35,491-493. Probe results update the shared failure counter when the shared lease still matches at :92-108, but no shared configuration generation or fingerprint is recorded or validated. Therefore, worker A can finish an in-flight probe with stale TLS/AUTH settings after worker B registers new settings and clear or increment worker B's shared failure counter. The added tests cover same-worker rotation and sequential worker scheduling, but no real multi-worker in-flight registration race; t/health-check.t also does not configure multiple workers.
Resolution
Add a shared per-cluster configuration generation or fingerprint. Increment or replace it when a worker registers a configuration, capture it in probe state, and validate it before applying success or failure results. Add a real multi-worker E2E test that starts a probe with the old configuration, registers a new configuration in another worker during that probe, and verifies that the stale result cannot modify the current configuration's failure counter.

wrong-auth-plain currently sets an incorrect config.auth, so check_auth fails before the health probe calls PING. The test can therefore pass even if a false PING reply is treated as success.
Keep the password-protected fixture and control connection unchanged, but clear config.auth for this mode. The unauthenticated probe will then reach PING, and the existing health assertion will detect an incorrect recovery. This adds regression coverage for the current PING handling; it does not indicate a production failure.

Snapshot connection settings and reuse topology caches by configuration identity. Prevent older clients from replacing another configuration's health state and allow abandoned credentials to expire.
Harden fixture startup rollback and shutdown, exercise unauthenticated PING, and extend allocation and interleaving regressions.
Addressed the NOAUTH test coverage note in 0db8b1f: the plain-TCP case now omits config.auth, so the probe reaches PING without sending AUTH and exercises Redis's false, NOAUTH response. The test requires the failure counter to increase instead of accepting recovery.
Validation of this revision: make test passes all 100 Test::Nginx assertions, plus 22 named mocked regressions and the initial smoke checks. The fixture cleanup scenarios were verified separately with real Redis.
The TLS root cause is real and this does fix it, but I'd suggest a different shape for the fix.
The only reason this PR has to serialize connect_opts plus the AUTH password into shm (and then deal with credential rotation and stale probe results) is that the probe runs in the privileged agent, which never sees the cluster config. If the probe runs in the workers that already hold the config, all of that goes away:
new() registers the config in a worker-local table keyed by cluster name. The latest call wins, so credential rotation is handled for free.
When track_node_failure records a failure, the worker also remembers that node in a local set and lazily starts its own ngx.timer.every(1). _M.init() can stay as a no-op, so APISIX doesn't need to change.
Each tick the worker probes the nodes in its set that are still marked unhealthy in shm, using the same connect_opts + check_auth path as normal requests. A dict:add("probe:" .. key, true, 1) acts as a cross-worker lock, so each node is probed at most once per second across all workers.
On success, delete the failure record. On failure, bump it as today.
Recovery stays at about 1s, any connect option works (including cdata client certs that cjson can't encode), and the password never lands in shared memory.
Separately, the cleanup scoping change (refresh_slots on one cluster wiping the failure records of every cluster) fixes a real but unrelated bug. I'd split it into its own PR.
Keep TLS and AUTH settings local to each worker and reuse the normal connection authentication path. Start probes lazily, coordinate waiting workers, and reject stale results.
Remove configuration-based topology isolation and unrelated cleanup changes. Consolidate regression tests while retaining recovery and interleaving coverage.
Validation: make test passes 18 simulated cases and 102 Test::Nginx assertions with Redis 6.2.24 and OpenResty 1.29.2.4.

Key health records and probe locks by the AUTH, TLS and pool settings so stale workers and in-flight probes cannot change another configuration's health state. Reuse the existing dictionaries, timers and client configuration references.
Add cross-worker regressions for stale failures and successes, and adapt existing credential and TLS update coverage.
Validated with 22 unit cases, 102 real Redis assertions and 24 before/after APISIX multi-worker trials.
This reverts commit 2ecc022.
Retain the fair probe lock and shared per-node failure state. Remove request-path hashing, credential-derived shared keys and the duplicated integration-test formula. Keep worker-local configuration references and the TLS/AUTH probe path.
Validated with a fresh full make test run: 20 deterministic cases and 102 Test::Nginx assertions passed with Redis 6.2.24 and OpenResty 1.29.2.4.
Adapt the small API7 Lua-library CI pattern to run make test on pull requests to devel and pushes to devel. Install public OpenResty, Test::Nginx, LuaCov and Redis dependencies without repository secrets.
Reuse the existing health fixtures and add a disposable six-node Redis Cluster runner with readiness checks, owned-process cleanup and failure-log artifacts.
Validated the workflow run blocks in a clean Ubuntu 24.04 container with OpenResty 1.31.1.1 and Redis 7.0.15: 20 unit cases and 102 Test::Nginx assertions passed. actionlint, ShellCheck, failure cleanup and occupied-port checks also passed.
