NAMI — Nautical Navigation for Mapping and Inspection

🥇 1st place — NEEC Hackathon 2023 (NEEC / Instituto Superior Técnico, 2–3 December 2023, 32 hours)

About 65% of drinkable water is lost in distribution networks, and many of those networks are not even mapped. NAMI is a prototype that travels inside a pipe and rebuilds its path from motion sensors, so leaks and flaws can be found.

How it works

  • Hardware (Arduino): accelerometer + gyroscope and a sound emitter (controller.ino).
  • Data bridge (api.py): Flask API that reads the sensor stream over serial.
  • Path reconstruction (map.py): low-pass filter (SciPy Butterworth) + Extended Kalman Filter (AHRS) for orientation, then integration into a 3D path. Output plots are in plots/.
  • Pitch: landing page in website/, pitch deck and business model in pitch/.

3D path

Stack

Python (Flask, NumPy, SciPy, AHRS, Matplotlib) · Arduino C++ · HTML/CSS

Status

Hackathon prototype. It works as a proof of concept; it needs better hardware and more testing.

Built together with Bernardo.
