fix: resolve an escalated story after a resume cleared the run's pause - #1001
A sprint run paused at a CRITICAL escalation. After a bmad-loop resume, state.json had paused_reason / paused_stage / paused_story_key all null while the story stayed escalated, and bmad-loop resolve refused with run <id> is not paused at an escalation (stage: none). The only way out was deleting the run.
Root cause
cli._prepare_resume_locked clears the pause and saves before the engine starts. Only the engine's except RunPaused (the run-end re-pause, or an in-run _escalate) writes the pause fields back. Any exit in between leaves an ESCALATED task behind null pause fields: a kill or SIGHUP, a stop, a crash, or a SystemExit from the adapter build in runsetup.compose_resume. Every resolve gate keyed only on paused_stage == "escalation", so nothing could clear it. Separately, cmd_resolve checked the stage before liveness, so a resumed engine that was still running got "stage: none" instead of "still live".
Changes
fix(resolve): admit an escalated story after a resume cleared the run's pause (0625ac8)
New pure seam escalation.unresolved_escalation_keys; the engines' _unresolved_escalation_key delegate to it.
runs.escalation_resolvable / default_escalation_key / escalation_story_admitted: resolve, re-arm, adopt and abandon also take a run with no pause stage that is not finished, not a sweep, and has an unresolved escalated story.
Still refused: the environment pause and every other stage, finished runs, sweeps (stage-only admission), and stories/tickets attempt-0 wedges. --reverify is untouched.
cmd_resolve checks liveness before the pause stage.
The resolve context's reason comes from the story's last story-escalated journal row unless the run is paused on that story.
fix(resume): warn about and surface an escalated story a resume skips (f6d5f98)
TUI R / _do_rearm use the same admission.
resume warns on stderr for each still-escalated story, and the TUI resume confirm shows the same line.
status text and the TUI run header show escalated: story '<k>' awaiting resolve when no pause stage is set. --json is unchanged.
fix(resume): restore the pause when a resume fails before its engine starts (c041634)
RunState.pause_snapshot() / restore_pause() cover exactly the six fields clear_pause() clears.
_resume_paused_run restores them under the state lock if compose_resume or the bypass warning raises (BaseException; adapter failures are SystemExit). It restores only when the run still exists, has not finished and was not re-paused, and journals resume-aborted with the exception class name only.
A restore that fails prints a warning, and the original error still propagates.
tests/test_escalation.py: the seam (sprint / stories / tickets, task order). Engine and StoriesEngine parity tests.
tests/test_resolve.py / tests/test_runs.py: re-arm admits a cleared pause; --story must be unresolved; sweep, finished and attempt-0 wedge are refused; the resolve-context reason comes from the journal.
…'s pause
`resume` clears the pause fields before its engine starts, and only a
`RunPaused` writes them back, so an engine that exits before run end (kill,
stop, crash, adapter-build failure) leaves the run unpaused with a task still
ESCALATED. Every resolve path keyed on `paused_stage == escalation` and
refused it with "stage: none", leaving no way out (#958).
- escalation.unresolved_escalation_keys: the shared predicate; the engine's
run-end re-pause and the CheckpointFlowMixin override now delegate to it
(stories/tickets keep only attempt > 0).
- runs.escalation_resolvable / default_escalation_key /
escalation_story_admitted: admit the escalation stage, or a null stage on a
not-finished, non-sweep run with an unresolved escalation. Environment and
other stages, finished runs and sweeps keep their refusals.
- re-arm, adopt and abandon (runs, unitreplay, cli entry gate and locked
re-checks) use the rule; `--reverify` admission is unchanged.
- cmd_resolve checks engine liveness before the pause stage, so a running
resumed engine reports "still live".
- resolve.build_context takes paused_reason from the run only when paused at
the escalation on this story, else from the story's last story-escalated
journal row.
TUI R and the re-arm's locked re-check admit a run whose pause a resume
cleared while a story stayed escalated (#958), by runs.escalation_resolvable;
the environment refusal stays first. resume and the TUI resume confirm name
a still-escalated story and the resolve that clears it; status text and the
TUI run header hint it when the run reads as not paused. Sweeps are excluded
throughout. The hint and the null-stage admission share one predicate,
escalation.cleared_pause_escalation_keys.
The change lets eligible unfinished story runs resolve escalations after resume clears their pause fields. Resume warns about skipped escalated stories and restores the prior pause if setup fails before engine startup. CLI and TUI status surfaces identify stories awaiting resolution.
Resume snapshots pause fields and restores them after eligible pre-start failures, then records resume-aborted. CLI and TUI warn about skipped escalations and show resolve hints. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.
Resolve, re-arm, adoption, and replay abandonment use shared admission rules. Eligible runs select an unresolved story when no pause stage is set. Resolve context finds the requested story’s latest escalation reason in the journal.

Merge Risk: Low · up to c7116
Resolving an escalated story after resume now works, and the CLI refuses a live engine under the lock. The TUI re-arm checks engine liveness only before it takes the lock, so a narrow race remains. Re-check liveness inside the lock before merge or as a quick follow-up.

Explanation
Issue [#958] requires a recovery path after resume clears the run pause while the story remains escalated. The change admits an eligible unresolved escalation for resolve and re-arm, selects the default escalated story, and rejects sweeps, finished runs, environment pauses, and unsupported attempt-0 wedges. cmd_resolve checks engine liveness first. Resume warnings, status hints, TUI hints, and pause restoration cover the reported recovery state. The summary reports focused automated tests for these paths.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to unresolved escalations after resume. Shared escalation predicates support resolve, re-arm, adopt, and abandon behavior for the same stale state. Resume restoration protects the pause fields that caused the issue. CLI, TUI, documentation, and regression tests describe or verify these recovery paths. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

A rabbit found a pause undone, And marked the stories skipped for now. It saved the fields when setup failed, Then showed which tale resolve could mend. The burrow hummed; the queue went on.
