Configured copies could overwrite worktree Git pointers or escape either root through glob-expanded traversal, newline-split discovery records, source links, and existing destination links. Validate relative path components at the copy boundary, keep find discovery NUL-delimited, and skip newline names at the existing line-based directory-list API.

Destination files are staged in private directories and renamed to avoid following existing links or overwriting hard-linked external files. Replacements retain the destination mode; new files retain source-mode behavior subject to umask. Git metadata guards also cover case variants on case-insensitive filesystems. Directory copies preserve source symlinks without traversing them, check destination components before writes, and exclude nested Git metadata. New directory clones use private staging; clone fallback only removes this invocation's output, preserving existing destination-only data.

Validation: the full local BATS suite, targeted copy and creation regression suites, ShellCheck, completion generation checks, and Linux CI pass. Regression tests cover Git metadata, expanded traversal, newline records, source/destination symlinks, hard links, and destination-only files. Bash component checks protect against checkout-provided paths; they do not provide descriptor-relative protection against concurrent hostile filesystem replacement.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Copy operations now reject unsafe paths and avoid copying Git metadata, helping prevent unintended changes outside the selected locations.
    • Directory copying handles symlinks and filenames containing newlines more safely, and preserves existing destination permissions during updates.
    • Failures to create or verify directories are now reported instead of being silently ignored.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for path safety, directory updates, permissions, and copy failure scenarios.

Walkthrough

Configured copies now validate paths, filter newline-containing discovery records, and stage file and directory writes. Directory copies preserve destination-only files and skip nested Git metadata. Tests cover traversal, links, hard links, permissions, and clone fallback.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: High

Suggested reviewers: helizaga, arwtyxouymz, natoboram

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 2e333

Configured copies now reject traversal paths, symlinked path components, and nested Git metadata, and they stage writes so they do not follow links or overwrite hard-linked external files. The earlier mode-loss and unverified Git metadata removal concerns are addressed, with test coverage. No outstanding merge-blocking issue was found.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 2e333

Path confinement and protection against linked-file overwrites are substantially stronger. However, replacements preserve numeric permission bits without preserving the destination’s group ownership or ACLs. In shared worktrees, this can make copied sensitive data accessible to previously excluded local users.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Staged replacement preserves destination mode bits but discards the existing inode’s ownership and ACL state. On a shared worktree, group-readable bits can apply to a different group, or named-user ACL restrictions can disappear, allowing previously excluded local users to read copied content. Base direct copying retained the existing inode. The new mode-preservation test does not cover this authorization-state change.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified regression concerns filesystem data in selected destination worktrees, potentially across all targets of one copy invocation. It requires replacement authority in the destination directory and an existing access restriction not reproduced on the staged inode; no remote or cross-tenant reachability is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — For example, an existing mode-0644 file can deny a named local user through an ACL. Replacing it with a staged mode-0644 inode lacking that ACL allows that user to read the copied content, assuming directory traversal is permitted. Numeric-mode restoration does not reconstruct the denial. Source or default ACLs may incidentally preserve equivalent restrictions, but the implementation does not guarantee this.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-owned roots remain trusted, while checkout-provided descendant paths receive component checks. These are pathname checks followed by pathname operations, not descriptor-relative confinement against concurrent hostile replacement. That stronger race-resistance guarantee was also absent from the base and is explicitly outside the stated change scope.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The copy helpers clean up returned failures but do not install interruption handlers or reclaim abandoned staging on retry. Interruption can therefore leave private staging containing partial data or unpruned Git metadata. This is a lifecycle limitation, not evidence of a new externally readable exposure; the supplied failure tests exercise ordinary returned failures.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define and preserve the destination’s effective authorization metadata before publishing a replacement, or fail safely when it cannot be preserved. Cover restrictive named-user ACLs and differing destination groups alongside existing numeric-mode tests.

527-528: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

These negated assertions cannot fail the test.

Bats does not fail a test when a ! command line returns non-zero, except on the last line. Lines 527 and 528 therefore never check the return value of _copy_pattern_file.

The final check is also weak. For ../victim, a wrongly accepted copy writes victim onto itself, so its content stays secret. A regression in the traversal guard would not fail this test.

Use run and check $status explicitly.

✅ Proposed fix
- ! _copy_pattern_file '../victim' "$_test_tmpdir/dst" '' true false
- ! _copy_pattern_file '././../victim' "$_test_tmpdir/dst" '' true false
+ run _copy_pattern_file '../victim' "$_test_tmpdir/dst" '' true false
+ [ "$status" -ne 0 ]
+ run _copy_pattern_file '././../victim' "$_test_tmpdir/dst" '' true false
+ [ "$status" -ne 0 ]

Also assert that $_test_tmpdir/dst stays empty after the calls.

Preserve destination ACLs during staged replacements.

_copy_tree_entry replaces existing files with a new inode and restores only the numeric mode. This loses the destination access ACL. On POSIX ACL filesystems, the numeric group bits represent the ACL mask, not necessarily group::. A destination with group::--- and a readable mask can therefore become readable by the owning group after replacement.

Preserve the destination ACL after chmod and before mv, while keeping the staged-file approach. Support the ACL mechanism for each supported platform and provide an explicit fallback when ACL support is unavailable. Add an ACL-specific test. The existing numeric-mode test does not cover this case.
