When Pydantic validation fails and _coerce_response_to_pydantic falls back to handle_partial_json, the agent reference was hardcoded to None. If the partial-JSON path then needs another LLM round-trip (instruction fallback), it crashes because handle_partial_json expects an agent with an llm. - Add optional gent: Any = None field to OutputConverter base. - Pass self.agent instead of None in _coerce_response_to_pydantic. - Make Agent.get_output_converter an instance method and pass agent=self. This is a rebase of crewAIInc#7989 onto current main after the monorepo restructure.

Async fallback blocks the event loop
High Severity
ato_pydantic still calls _coerce_response_to_pydantic, which is no longer I/O-free once agent is set. The instruction retry runs handle_partial_json → convert_with_instructions → to_pydantic → llm.call on the event loop, blocking async task export for the recovery path this change enables.

cursor[bot] flagged that stamping the calling agent onto the Converter built inside convert_with_instructions lets a failed refit route its own partial-JSON fallback back through convert_with_instructions, spawning a nested LLM call tree on every failed attempt. The refit converter is now built with agent=None (falling back to the base Converter when no custom converter_cls is given), so a ValidationError stays inside that converter's max_attempts loop. The top-level agent stamping that fixes crewAIInc#7984 is unchanged: the refit still runs with the agent's LLM and still recovers off-schema output. Empirically verified with a stubbed-LLM harness: always-invalid output now costs 12 provider calls (measured 183 before this change); refit recovery and refit self-retry paths still pass.

The response_format fallback in Agent._build_lite_agent_output built a Converter without the agent, so its partial-JSON path entered convert_with_instructions(agent=None) and raised the crewAIInc#7984 TypeError on every attempt - the designed instructions-based refit never ran. Build it through self.get_output_converter() so the fallback converter carries the agent. The refit converter created inside convert_with_instructions is still agent-less, so the nested LLM call tree found earlier cannot reappear here. Verified with a stubbed-LLM harness: - agent-less construction (before): 3 provider calls, TypeError inside the ConverterError chain, no recovery; - agent-stamped construction (after): recovery on the instructed refit round (2 calls); - always-failing LLM (after): bounded at 12 provider calls.

What
When
Agent._execute_corefalls back to converter-based parsing after direct Pydantic validation fails, theConverterwas constructed without the agent reference. Inside_coerce_response_to_pydantic, the partial-JSON handler then calledhandle_partial_json(..., agent=None)unconditionally. If the partial-JSON path delegates to
convert_with_instructions, that function raises:This crashes the retry conversion and propagates up as a
ConverterError, even though the LLM output is recoverable via the instructions-based retry path.Fix
agent: Any = Nonefield toOutputConverter(backward compatible — existing callers that don't pass an agent keep working).Agent.get_output_converteris an instance method again and stampsagent=selfon the converter it builds._coerce_response_to_pydantic, passself.agentinstead of the hard-codedagent=Nonetohandle_partial_json.response_formatfallback (Agent._build_lite_agent_output) now builds its converter throughself.get_output_converter(...)so that fallback carries the agent too (round 3, below).convert_with_instructions/async_convert_with_instructionsare built withagent=None(baseConverterunless a customconverter_clsis given). This keeps a failed refit inside that converter's ownmax_attemptsloop instead of routing the partial-JSON fallback back throughconvert_with_instructions— the unbounded nested-LLM-call tree found in round 2 (see below). No behavior change for call sites that don't have an agent (e.g. the static
get_output_converteron the LangGraph adapter). How to test
Reproducer from #7984:
model_validate_jsonbut can be repaired via partial JSON / instructions.convert_with_instructionsreceives the agent and completes the retry successfully.Verified with a stubbed-LLM harness (fake agent + fake LLM with scripted replies, exercising the real
Converter/handle_partial_json/convert_with_instructionscode paths):max_attempts(3 calls);convert_to_modelentry point (the_execute_corepath): same recovery behavior.Note
Medium Risk
Changes agent/LLM structured-output retry and refit control flow; mis-wiring could affect conversion success or provider call volume, but refit paths are explicitly bounded.
Overview
Fixes structured-output recovery when direct Pydantic validation fails and the partial-JSON path needs an instructions-based LLM refit (#7984).
OutputConverter / Converter now accept an optional
agentreference.Agent.get_output_converteris an instance method again and stampsagent=selfon the converter._coerce_response_to_pydanticforwards that agent intohandle_partial_jsoninstead ofNone, soconvert_with_instructionscan run without raisingTypeError.Refit converters inside
convert_with_instructions/async_convert_with_instructionsare built withagent=None(and defaultConverterwhen no custom class is passed). That keeps refit retries inside each converter’smax_attemptsloop and avoids routing partial-JSON failures back throughconvert_with_instructions, which previously caused unbounded nested LLM calls.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 0176128. Security hardening (round 2, 2026-10-31)
Cursor Bugbot flagged (MEDIUM) that the agent-stamped refit converter created in
convert_with_instructionscould route its own partial-JSON fallback back throughconvert_with_instructions, spawning a nested LLM call tree on every failed attempt.Reproduced empirically with a stubbed-LLM harness (output always fails schema validation): 183 provider calls for one conversion before the change (recursion only cut off by the Python stack limit, then retried by the outer
max_attemptsloop).Fix (ed1af62): the refit converter is now built with
agent=None(baseConverterunless a customconverter_clsis given), so aValidationErrorstays inside that converter'smax_attemptsloop and no nested agent-bearing converter can be constructed. Measured after: 12 provider calls (3 top attempts x (1 + 3 refit attempts)). The agent stamping that fixes #7984 is unchanged at the top level; refit recovery and refit self-retry scenarios still pass.Kickoff fallback fix (round 3, 2026-11-01)
Cursor Bugbot flagged (HIGH) that the kickoff
response_formatfallback in_build_lite_agent_outputstill built itsConverterwithout an agent, and that with the refit converter agent-less,get_output_converter's agent stamping was bypassed — so at this sitehandle_partial_jsonstill hit theTypeErrorand recoverable output still failed as aConverterError.Confirmed empirically with the same stubbed-LLM harness (prose output with no JSON object, so
handle_partial_jsonfalls through toconvert_with_instructions):TypeError: Agent must be provided if converter_cls is not specified.inside theConverterErrorchain on every attempt, no recovery;get_output_converter): the instructed refit round runs with the agent and recovers the structured output (2 calls);Fix (07116d4): the fallback converter is now built through
self.get_output_converter(...), so it carries the agent. One honest scoping note: at this site the refit round re-issues the LLM with the same messages asto_pydantic's own retry, so for a deterministic LLM the observable delta is the removedTypeErrorabort and the correct attempt budgeting (3 blind retries → up to 3 × 4 instructed rounds), not a new recovery capability — the recovery capability shows up as soon as the LLM's second round differs, which is the normal case for a real model.Fixes #7984
