fix(coroot): preserve alerts when observations are unknown - #5844
Missing monitoring data can incorrectly close firing alerts and clear an operator's suppression, making a fault look recovered.
What
Prepare a corrected Coroot image that preserves alert state while observations are unavailable. Runtime adoption follows separately after its signed publication is verified.
Validation at signed head c5b5d1d76c80a520d17c04c96396c06a9d201731:
The native auditor/SQLite regression failed before the repair: absent container observations resolved active alerts and cleared suppressed alerts. It passes after the repair, alongside continuous-breach timing, genuine recovery, disabled-rule retirement and missing-report controls.
Current upstream source passes make lint, make test, watcher race checks, native build and frontend format/production build. The exact pinned platform release plus both repairs passes the full Go suite and watcher/auditor race checks.
The generated patch passes the publisher's unchanged application check. Its resulting seven source-file hashes exactly match the validated release tree; reverse checking preserves the existing checkpoint repair. Workflow validation passes.
The outer Git whitespace diagnostic identifies five unified-diff context lines in the generated patch. The underlying Go payload passes formatting/whitespace checks; no check, attribute or patch-application requirement was disabled.
This prepares publication only. Hosted Linux image verification, current-head review, protected merge, signed publication and separate runtime adoption remain required. The absent-report alerts in #5594 remain unresolved; they were not dismissed or suppressed.

The Linux server and collector image verification passes at c5b5d1d76c80a520d17c04c96396c06a9d201731. The corresponding source correction is coroot/coroot#1099, now offered for upstream review with passing hosted Go/UI checks.
This producer draft remains blocked. MegaLinter reports existing repository-wide required-workflow findings tracked by #5843, with the owned #5785/#5846 repair in progress. The native manifest regression failed while pulling its unchanged pinned BusyBox image because Docker Hub's anonymous pull quota was exhausted. GitHub refused a job rerun while the containing workflow remained active; no rerun has started and no check was excluded.
Publication, separate runtime adoption and live acceptance remain outstanding. The absent-report alerts in #5594 are still unresolved.
The Coroot patch adds checkpoint-record WAL-distance data to PostgreSQL checkpoint findings and uses it when the sample is finite, nonnegative, and timestamp-aligned; otherwise, it uses the existing WAL-since-checkpoint metric. Unknown checks now clear pending alert state without updating the alert. Added tests cover unknown and missing telemetry, pending-period timing, recovery, and disabled rules. The hotfix workflow uses server version v1.28.1-checkpoints.2 for verification and publishing.
The patch avoids closing alerts when observations are missing. A missing report still does not restart a pending alert period, so an alert can fire early after a short gap. Clear the pending entry in the nil-check branch and add a test before merging.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: alert state is kept when monitoring observations are unknown or missing. The changeset makes UNKNOWN check results neither recover nor breach alerts, clears pending state, and adds checkpoint WAL-distance handling. The title is specific, uses the Conventional Commits form, and does not rely on vague terms.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the problem (missing monitoring data can close firing alerts and clear operator suppression) and the outcome (a corrected Coroot image that keeps alert state while observations are unavailable). This matches the changeset, which fixes alert handling for UNKNOWN observations and bumps the Coroot checkpoint image version. The description is brief and omits file-level detail, as its template asks.

A missing report skipped the UNKNOWN guard, so a stale pending timestamp

Independent static review of the full PR at this head, including upstream Coroot v1.28.1 with the patch applied. The patch applies at the pinned tag. UNKNOWN now returns before the resolve and clear-suppression branches. A missing report now restarts the pending period, which closes the earlier Major thread. The workflow keeps write permissions to the push-to-main publish job, pins every action by SHA, and routes every expression through env:. The image build runs go test ./... before publishing, so the new tests gate the image.
Non-blocking notes, none in the changed lines:
Upstream resolveNonMatchingAlerts still resolves the alerts of an application that drops out of the world, suppressed ones included. That can be a real deletion or a gap in observations. It is outside what this patch changes, so it is left as a follow-up question for #5594.
A check that stays UNKNOWN indefinitely now never auto-resolves. That is the intended trade-off, and the same rule applies whenever a report goes missing.
Two of the new tests also pass on unpatched v1.28.1. They are useful as regression guards. The tests that prove the fix are TestCheckAlertUnknownDoesNotRecover and TestCheckAlertMissingReportRestartsPendingPeriod.

Incremental round over 3a82cd99..3025a6d2. The only new commit merges main into the branch, which was 23 commits behind. The pull request still changes the same two files with the same content: the checkpoint image version moves to v1.28.1-checkpoints.2, and the recorded patch gains the fix for the Major thread. main changed other lines of the hotfix workflow and the checkpoint Dockerfile; none of them overlap this change. The image build still applies the patch and runs go test ./... before it publishes, so CI at this head shows whether the patch still applies after those main changes.
The only change since the last reviewed head is the MegaLinter auto-fix commit 9a31207e: one Markdown table delimiter row in scripts/capture-openbao-replacement/README.md normalised from |---| to | --- |. It is formatting only, renders identically, and touches nothing the Coroot alert change depends on.
All checks pass at 9a31207e, including Verify server and Verify collector (the patched image builds) and the complete Go regressions.
Verdict: GREEN at 9a31207e — no findings.

Why
Missing monitoring data can incorrectly close firing alerts and clear an operator's suppression, making a fault look recovered.
What
Prepare a corrected Coroot image that preserves alert state while observations are unavailable. Runtime adoption follows separately after its signed publication is verified.
