Add support for slash commands in copilot --acp #1044
Hi @cocoich could you clarify which slash commands you are looking to use?
Switching model can be done via the set model method
Hi @devm33, sorry for late.
I'm using zed with Copilot cli (custom agent), i saw selectbox in agent panel. but i mean all slash commands (/clear, /compact, /usage etc), not only /model.
I think cli should notice available_commands_update with sessionUpdate after new session, for Client know.
/usage could be done, that makes sense. ACP: add /usage slash command #1244 Also something worth considering adding to the ACP spec for sending context metrics.
/model is best served with session/set_model since a /model slash command couldn't be interactive.
Feel free to open more issues for anything else you'd like to see. Appreciate your input!
@devm33
i think most of the / commands are useful.
/init
/user [show/list/switch]
/logout
/lsp
/mcp
/agent
/deletage
I have built an editor to test this out and so far, not having / commands for github is sorely making me want to use other providers that do support them
Adding to @cocoich's and @samwdp's point — I've been setting up Copilot CLI via ACP in JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA and ran into the same gap. @devm33 I think this one deserves a second look.
The core issue is about consistent experience across surfaces. In the terminal, slash commands aren't just shortcuts — they shape how I think about and drive the prompt. When I type /fleet, I know my prompt will be split into parallel chunks and I can use /tasks to watch over them. When I type /research, I'm telling Copilot to go deep with GitHub search and web sources rather than answer from context. /compact lets me manage the conversation proactively when I feel the context getting bloated. These commands change how the agent works, not just what it does.
I verified on v1.0.15 that session/new returns models, modes, and configOptions (great!), but no available_commands_update notification is sent. The ACP spec has stable support for this since September 2025, and clients like Zed and JetBrains are ready to render them.
Even a subset would be hugely valuable — /fleet, /tasks, /research, /compact, /diff, /review, /delegate, /usage, /context would cover the most impactful workflows that have no ACP equivalent today.
Thanks for the feedback @szgergo. That makes a lot of sense. In 1.0.39 we shipped a few basic slash commands. Will reopen this issue and plan to expand it for more parity
A very stupid way to make them work is to send one message in a conversation and then restart zed since then the available_commands_update is resend for the existing session.
Thanks everyone for the feedback here. ACP sessions now advertise Copilot CLI's slash commands, including skills, through available_commands_update (sent after the session/new or session/load response and kept up to date), and support for the full slash-command set was completed in Copilot CLI v1.0.85 via #2555. If your ACP client (for example Zed or a JetBrains IDE) still shows no slash commands on the latest version, please reopen with your CLI and client versions.
Triaged as part of a Copilot SDK backlog review, with help from GitHub Copilot.

luismgg commentedon Jan 30, 2026
In both zed and intellij I don't see the option to change models
devm33 commentedon Jan 30, 2026
Which version are you running @luismgg?
luismgg commentedon Jan 30, 2026
The latest, as you can see in this video
https://x.com/i/status/2017315324849160477
only the agent or ask option appears for intellij it is the same.
devm33 commentedon Jan 30, 2026
Ah apologies @luismgg the registry currently doesn't link to the Copilot CLI. It should be updated shortly.
In the meantime, you can enable in Zed in your settings.json:
Or in JetBrains acp.json:
{ "agent_servers": { "copilot": { "command": "copilot", "args": [ "--acp" ], } } }See the readme on this repo for downloading the CLI.

No problem, sorry for the mixup. I'll close this issue for now. Please feel free to open ones for any issues or requests. Thanks!

Thanks @cocoich!
/clearis probably best achieved throughsession/newin ACP, e.g. cmd+n in Zed/compactmakes sense ACP: add /compact slash command #1245/usagecould be done, that makes sense. @devm33 (1.0.48) currently, there is no slash commands in zed (Github Copilot agent).
Plamper commentedon May 18, 2026
It seems session/new is sent after session/update which could be some kind of race condition.
Codex ACP for comparison (this agent has slash commands working in zed):
