List custom agents as slash commands with a prefix. #1774
Describe the feature or problem you'd like to solve
Selecting a custom agent requires two steps, this cannot be represented in ACP protocol.
Proposed solution
The proposed solution is to make the custom agent commands available as slash commands with a prefix to separate them. For example if the user has following custom agents
review-tests
java-review
Those custom agents will be able as slash commands through agent input and ACP available commands as
agent::review-test
agent::java-review
For CLI users this makes is easy to select custom agents with one selection. and the same can be easily make available through available commands in ACP model.
Anthropic introduced skills as slash commands. If Copilot CLI does the same (#1744) (and also reference prompts #1334 and #618), then would we do the same for skills and prompts?
An update based on a live ACP command-discovery check with Copilot CLI 1.0.94-3:
available_commands_updatedoes advertise skills and the enabled, user-invocable skill names (invoked as /<skill-name>). Skill-command discovery is supported now.
The same notification advertises neither agent nor agents. Custom-agent selection is still absent from the advertised ACP slash-command interface.
Interactive CLI help documents /agent [name] for browsing/selecting agents; it does not list a separate /agents command.
The check used initialize and session/new, then inspected the session/update notification. No model prompt was sent, so this verifies command advertisement, not execution.
The skill part of the earlier discussion has therefore progressed, while this request to expose custom-agent selection over ACP remains relevant.
Thanks for the suggestion. The underlying problem, choosing a custom agent in one step including from ACP clients, is now covered differently: since Copilot CLI v1.0.40, ACP clients can list and switch custom agents through the agent session config option (which clients can surface as a selector), and in the interactive CLI /agent <name> selects an agent directly. Skills are also advertised to ACP clients as slash commands. If you still need custom agents exposed as prefixed slash commands specifically, feel free to reopen and let us know which client needs it.
Triaged as part of a Copilot SDK backlog review, with help from GitHub Copilot.
