Record metric inputs and run metadata during generation - #84
Record what dataset metrics need, during generation, annotation and retargeting. This PR computes no metric; the
metrics framework follows in #90. Recording is opt-in through --record_metric_inputs and off by default, so
existing runs produce the same output as before.
Changes
With --record_metric_inputs:
Every exported episode records step_success from the task's success term. Generation also records the
per-step EEF and commanded target poses under obs/datagen_info, without object poses.
Every exported dataset gets an autodata entry in env_args. It holds:
the run id and exported episode count;
each end effector's pose-action slice and clip bound;
the robot's joint names with their simulator limits;
optional datasheet hardware_limits from the embodiment YAML (added for Franka).
--result_file adds:
a run block: run id, seed, revision, input digests, hardware, setup and generation time;
<stem>.<run_id>.attempts.jsonl: one line per attempt, with its outcome and algorithm extras. Each run writes
its own log, so reruns keep earlier ones.
Annotation records its episode counts and wall time.
Always:
New GenerationAlgorithm.attempt_extras() hook. SkillGen uses it to report motion-planning time and whether a
plan failed.
Docs: the data generator concepts page describes the recording.
Testing
Unit tests: 378 passed.
End-to-end tests:
22 passed before the latest round of review changes;
after it, MimicGen, SkillGen bin, annotation and GR1 pass;
the GR1 test checks that output without the flag carries no metric inputs.
Retargeting by hand: G1 to GR1, with and without the flag.
The docs build passes with -W.
Same-seed runs against main (Franka at 20 envs twice, Franka at 100 envs, G1):
every episode's actions are identical;
files grow 15% (Franka) and 7% (G1) with recording on;
the generation-time difference is within run-to-run noise.

New Features
Added optional metric-input recording for dataset generation, annotation, and retargeting, including per-step task success and pose data.
Recorded datasets can include run metadata, hardware and simulator limits, and episode counts. Generation can also produce per-attempt logs with timing, outcomes, and planning details.
Added optional step-success recording and more complete generation result metadata.
Documentation
Expanded guidance on recorded metrics, run metadata, and attempt logs.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds optional metric-input recording across generation, annotation, and retargeting. It records per-step data, run metadata, and generation attempt details in datasets and result files. SkillGen reports planning time and failure status in attempt extras.

Metric recording is opt-in and leaves existing runs unchanged. When it is enabled, an environment with no success term would crash on the first step. A custom recorder configuration can also yield datasets that carry metric metadata but lack the per-step pose inputs. Fix both before merging, or explicitly accept the narrow scope.

Generation, annotation and retargeting now record what dataset metrics
need, without computing any metric:
- Every producer records step_success from the task's success term.
Generation also records the per-step EEF and commanded target poses,
but not object poses, which annotation keeps for the source pool.
- Each exported dataset gets an autodata entry in env_args: run id,
exported count, pose-action layout, robot joint names with simulator
limits, and optional datasheet hardware_limits from the embodiment.
- --result_file adds a run block (run id, seed, revision, input
digests, hardware, setup and generation time) and an attempt log, one
line per attempt with its failure cause and algorithm extras.
- GenerationAlgorithm.attempt_extras() lets an algorithm report
per-attempt facts; SkillGen reports its motion-planning time.

- Each run writes its own attempt log, <stem>.<run_id>.attempts.jsonl,
so rerunning with the same --result_file keeps earlier logs, and an

kept failed episodes, so one left by an earlier run is not relabelled.
- The e2e helper checks the logged successes against the result.
- Docs: only generated datasets have a result file and attempt log.

…extras
- Metric recording is off by default, so datasets and result files
are unchanged unless --record_metric_inputs is given to generation,
annotation or retargeting. It records the per-step poses and task
success, the autodata entry and, with --result_file, the run block
and attempt log.
- GenerationResult no longer has failure_cause; SkillGen reports
planning_failed in its attempt extras, next to planning_time_s.
- metric_context() docstrings say what they record; the pose-action
entry's columns key is now action_slice.
- Docs: the run linkage holds once the run completes.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Evaluate the success term only once per step.
The recorder calls success_term.func inside env.step, and annotation and retargeting call it again afterward. A stateful success callback, such as one counting consecutive successful evaluations, advances twice per step. Enabling recording can therefore change episode outcomes and make step_success disagree with them. Share one evaluated result between recording and outcome detection. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
