Automation - escape to cancel current automation edit and restore old line - #35161
This PR was created using AI assistance; I have read, understood and complied following the guidelines for AI-assisted contributions. The AI tool(s) I used are listed below.
Cursor 2.5 & Claude Opus 5.5 (used for autocomplete and reviewing).
The automation interface adds a reset-edit-state notification. NotationActionController requests a reset after clearing a non-empty selection. NotationAutomationController tracks the polyline under edit and clears that state when an interaction completes, on reset, or during a rebuild. The muse subproject reference also changes.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to ec297
After switching between scores, pressing Escape may stop cancelling an in-progress automation edit. Fix the subscription lifecycle before merging. Several earlier concerns about automation-mode input restrictions also remain open.

Block disallowed notation drops in automation mode.
When automation mode is enabled, a palette or external drag can still reach dropSingle(). A range drag can still reach dropRange(). Neither path uses itemEditBlockedByAutomation(), so the new mouse guards do not prevent these notation edits. Reject disallowed drops before either call.

I ran into the click-and-drag bug ("avoid assert when dragging newly added point") on current main and fixed it locally, so I compared approaches. From reading fd53f70ade (not yet tested on this branch), a few possible issues:
m_previewingNewPoint is not reset on a plain click. A click on the line without dragging goes through pointAdded(..., completed=true), which calls requestAddPoint but leaves the flag true (it was set by pointAdded(false)). The next drag of an existing point then takes the m_previewingNewPoint branch: it adds a new point instead of moving the dragged one.
X is frozen during the drag preview. For the provisional point, automationPointAt() returns nullptr, so editRestricted is true and clampedX stays at the press position. The preview only moves vertically, but on release the point is added at the unclamped x.
Possible ghost point at the press position. The provisional PointData (tick = press tick) stays in m_pointsDataByStaff. The model-driven update after requestAddPoint only refreshes the range around the release tick, so after a long drag the provisional entry can remain as an uneditable ghost until the next full rebuild.
What I did locally (tested in a Release build: undo/redo, type switching, dropping on existing points, dragging past the system end, both staves of a piano part):
detect the provisional point with polylinePointIndex == -1 && automationPointAt(...) == nullptr instead of a member flag;
don't treat it as edit-restricted, so X is clamped to minX/maxX;
on release, synchronously remove it from m_pointsDataByStaff[key] and the polyline points, then call requestAddPoint(key, clampedX, y).
Happy to share the diff if useful.
Disclosure: the analysis was prepared with the help of an AI assistant (Claude); I reproduced the bug and tested the local fix myself.
Are curved (eased) segments between automation points planned for the UI? The model already supports this (mpe::AutomationPoint::Ease, evaluateAt) and playback uses it, but the curve can currently only be drawn with straight segments.
I implemented this in my local build to try it out:
Alt+drag on a segment bends it, with a live preview while dragging.
Esc cancels the bend; Alt+double-click resets it to a straight line.
The bend is tessellated with evaluateAt and mapped to display space, so the drawing matches playback (also for Volume/Tempo).
Undo/redo work, and bends are saved with the score.
(short screen recording attached)
It works well in practice, especially for shaping crescendos/diminuendos. I'm happy to share details if this direction is useful, but I'd rather follow your intended design for the interaction.

@frankyzip - I'll consider these points you've raised.
Are curved (eased) segments between automation points planned for the UI?
Yes - as you say it's implemented in the model, it just hasn't been exposed yet. A different (but similar) design to the one you're describing is intended there.

Rebind the reset subscription for each current automation object.
init() subscribes to the initial automation object only. onCurrentNotationChanged() does not rebind resetEditStateRequested(). Each MasterNotation creates its own NotationAutomation, so Escape can notify the new object while the handler remains attached to the old object.
Rebind the notification when the current notation changes, and detach the previous subscription.

Update the resetEditStateRequested() subscription managed by init() so
onCurrentNotationChanged() detaches it from the previous automation object and
binds the handler to the current automation object. Preserve the existing reset
handler behavior and ensure only the current object remains subscribed.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Restore the provisional point when requestAddPoint() fails.
The incomplete path inserts a provisional point into m_pointsDataByStaff and the polyline. This line clears m_currentlyEditedPolyline, but the following requestAddPoint() result is ignored. If the request fails, the model remains unchanged while the provisional point remains visible. Escape also cannot call cancelEdit() because the active pointer is already null.
Check the return value and remove or rebuild the provisional point before clearing the active pointer.
