Cannot see full filename #17062

Open

Description

@tsr8

Description
In the standard vertical list view (not grid view), long file names are truncated with an ellipsis (…), and there is no way to see the full name without rotating the device or switching to grid view. This makes it difficult to identify files with similar or long names.

Steps to reproduce

  • Open the Nextcloud Android app.
  • Navigate to a folder containing a file with a long name (e.g., longer than 30 characters).
  • Ensure the view is set to vertical list view (not grid view).
  • Look at the file list – the file name is cut off with ….

Expected behavior
The file name should be fully visible in vertical list view, either by:

  • Automatically wrapping to the next line, or
  • Allowing horizontal scrolling of the filename, or
  • Showing a tooltip/popup on long press or single tap to reveal the full name.

Actual behavior
Only part of the file name is visible, and the rest is inaccessible unless the user switches to grid view or checks file details elsewhere.

Additional context

  • Switching to grid view shows slightly more but not always full names.
  • This issue does not occur in landscape orientation, where more horizontal space is available.
  • The problem affects usability for users who manage files with long, descriptive names (e.g., document versions, project files, photo names).

Possible suggestion for improvement
Allow multi‑line file names in vertical list view or add a long‑press option to copy or view full file name.

    @eiredrake

    Seconded on this...

    at this point just word wrapping would be helpful... I've got a bunch of D&D gaming PDFs with long names and I can't tell them apart because only the first X number of characters are visible.

    The issue wasn't solved. It is now even worse because shorter names are truncated too (have elipsis in middle of name).

    There is still no way to see full filename in vertical view.

    This is an enhancement issue. Suggested solutions can be found in expected behaviour.

    @tobiasKaminsky fyi.

    I would like to strongly support this request. This is one of the most frustrating usability problems when working with Nextcloud on Android.

    I regularly work with files that have long, similar names, where the most important difference is at the end or in the middle of the filename.

    For example:

    • "Annual_Report_Project_2024.pdf"
    • "Annual_Report_Project_2025.pdf"
    • "Annual_Report_Project_2026.pdf"

    When filenames are truncated, it becomes impossible to reliably identify the correct file.

    I appreciate the work on PR #17426, but the fundamental problem remains: Users still need a reliable way to reveal the complete filename before opening or selecting a file.

    I also tested an alternative Android file manager, Voyager, which connects to Nextcloud via WebDAV. Although its file list also truncates long names, it at least allows me to open the file details and see the complete filename.

    This is still not ideal, but having that option is significantly better than not being able to identify the file at all.

    I would suggest:

    1. Allow filenames to wrap onto two or more lines, ideally as a configurable option.
    2. Provide an easy way to reveal the complete filename, for example via tap, long press, or a file details dialog.
    3. Allow copying the complete filename.
    4. Make the full filename accessible in all relevant file browsing and selection workflows.
    5. Preserve the file extension and ensure that differences in the middle or at the end of filenames remain identifiable.
    6. Consider a configurable filename display mode instead of forcing a single truncation strategy.

    The Android system file picker, when accessing Nextcloud through the Storage Access Framework, can also make identifying long filenames difficult. I understand that its UI is controlled by Android rather than the Nextcloud app, so this may require a separate upstream issue.

    This is not merely a cosmetic issue. It affects basic file management and can lead to users opening, sharing, editing, or deleting the wrong document.

    Please consider a complete solution rather than just changing where the ellipsis appears.

    Thank you for your work on Nextcloud!

    Using a long press to reveal the full filename could conflict with the existing multi-select functionality. Additionally, introducing a separate configuration toggle for this behavior might add unnecessary complexity and make the app less intuitive to use.

    As an alternative, PR (#17866) already improves filename visibility by allowing filenames to span up to three lines in the file action bottom sheet. This should help users view longer filenames without introducing additional interactions or settings.
