Make Notification work out-of-the-box for F-droid version without Gplay services #6458

Closed

Description

@CypLef

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
With the f-droid version, notification are not working, unless you install some third party app on your phone, and maybe on your nextcloud server. (see official doc: https://github.com/nextcloud/talk-android/blob/master/docs/unifiedPush.md by @mahibi , and related isssue on this repo: #6372).

Even though i follow all steps of the official doc, it's still not working.

Describe the solution you'd like
I would like to have the notification working directly after installing the f-droid version (just as the google play version). No third party app required on the phone or on the server.

Describe alternatives you've considered
I don't know how to do it, but it would be a great feature :)

Additional context
This features concern only the f-droid version

Sorry, i forgot to precise: i use /e/Os (fork of LineageOs), so i don't have google play services at all.

Is it possible to make this features work for all user without google play services?

i guess for /e/Os, unifiedPush will be necessary.

If it's still not working, please share the diagnosis report from the android talk app (Settings-advanced-diagnosis).

    OK,
for now, i installed NextPush (Uniefied Push for Nextcloud) on my phone.
But my Talk app doesn't seems to know how to use NextPush or Sunup:
I don't have the setting "enable Unified Push" on my Talk app, even though Talk recognize NextPush.

    Server side: everything seems fine

Hm maybe there is something wrong when 2 UnifiedPush services are available..
Was there ever any dialog to choose a UP service?
Does it work when you only have Sunup installed as UnifiedPush distributor?

i found out that there is already a unified Push app installed by default on /e/Os: https://e.foundation/fr/leaving-apple-e-os-now-supports-unifiedpush-find-your-perfect-pro-privacy-gift-with-murena/
    it is called: ntfy
But i can't configure Talk to use it...

i had nom dialog asking to choose an up service

just to double check: you uninstalled all other Unified Push distributor apps but Talk Android does not offer to enable Unified Push in the settings?

With default /e/Os, the app ntfy is already installed.
with this config (ntfy only) Talk show no setting to enable Unified Push

if i install another Unified Push app (Sunup, NextPush), i have then 2 or 3 Unified Push app (because i didn't want to uninstall Ntfy which is part of default /e/Os):

    • With any of this configuration (ntfy + sunup, or Ntfy + NextPush, or ntfy + sunup + NextPush), i have no settings to enable Unified Push in Talk App.

And i have no GUI for ntfy, i can juste disable it or remove some autorisation.

i try to "force stop" ntfy and install sunup: nothing change, Talk still see 2 Unified Push system.

Here is what i tried, and it change nothing:

    • force stop Ntfy and install Sunup
    • allow all notif for ntfy (also "registration" which was disable by default) , then empty cache ans user data, and launch Talk
    • reboot phone
    • empty Talk cache

    ok thanks for the info.
I currently don't have a /e/Os device available to test this.
Maybe there is a chance @p1gp1g has or has some idea whats wrong?

Sorry, i forgot to precise: i use /e/Os (fork of LineageOs), so i don't have google play services at all.

/e/OS has microg by default (a reimplementation of the Play Services), so you can use FCM; and it comes with a UnifiedPush distributor by default too, so you can use UnifiedPush without installing any additional app (as you found out later).

Maybe there is a chance @p1gp1g has or has some idea whats wrong?

I'm pretty sure the issue is regarding web push server setting that is disabled by default: on your Nextcloud web app, with an admin account: Administration settings > Notifications > Toggle on Web Push switches

I have the same problem too and searching in forums I see others struggling too.
I have a phone running GrapheneOS without Google Play Services and my server runs Nextcloud-aio in docker.
My server doesn't have a Web Push checkbox in Settings -> Notifications
I've installed UnifiedPush through the Apps and also installed NextPush in the phone which doesn't see Talk application registered and the latter doesn't have a UnifiedPush Option. Below is the info of Talk App. I've also tried 25.0.0 RC2 to no avail.

I think you're checking the user's settings on not the admin settings. Check https://yourdomain.tld/index.php/settings/admin/notifications - it won't work until you enable web push

  19. kpapd commented on Aug 21, 2026

    @kpapd

That was it! There is a Notifications field in Settings -> Personal section but there's another one in Administration section.
Thanks for the quick respond. The registration was done and it seems to be working. Thanks for all the good work.

Maybe something may be shown to the user if the server is 34+ and web push is disabled, to let the user know they need to contact the admins?
