A pure-Rust reader for Esri File Geodatabases (.gdb folders), in crates/data/src/filegdb.rs. Until now a .gdb opened only through GDAL, and 3D data in it (multipatches) arrived as hundreds of loose triangles per building, which was slow to draw and looked like a mesh.

What it reads

  • Every feature class (a layer) and table (a standalone table), with all field types: integers, doubles, text, dates (as text, including Pro 3.2's date-only, time-only and with-offset types), GUIDs; and nulls.
  • The coordinate system by its code from the item definitions (GDB_Items, LatestWKID/WKID, EPSG or Esri), else its WKT. Esri's WKT for LV95 (Hotine_Oblique_Mercator_Azimuth_Center) isn't read by the WKT parser; the code is.
  • Points, multipoints, lines and polygons (holes by ring orientation). Curves are drawn as straight segments between their ends, with a notice.
  • 3D multipatches (type 54, as ArcGIS writes them, and 31/32, as GDAL writes them): each becomes its footprint, the union of its faces seen from above (geo::unary_union), with three fields: z_min, z_max and height (the difference), which Style › Extrusion stands the buildings up by. Faces tilted past about 87° (walls) are left out: they cover nothing from above, and slivers made i_overlay panic on two swissBUILDINGS3D buildings. A multipatch with no face seen from above (only walls) is drawn as the hull of its points.
  • Not read: compressed tables, raster fields, version 4 row indexes with missing blocks. They give DataError::Unsupported, and layer.addData and info.fileLayers then fall back to GDAL when it is installed.

layer.addData and info.fileLayers try the native reader first for a .gdb (picked by a .gdbtable inside it, the Browser, or a drop, as in #623). add_layers' loop over a reader's layers is now add_reads, shared with it.

Results

swissBUILDINGS3D 3.0, tile 1072-14 (Winterthur, 102 MB, five layers of 5,270–5,374 buildings), on an M-series Mac:

Through GDAL Native
Adding the file 22 s (first conversion) 0.8 s
Building_solid geometry ~720,000 triangles 5,419 footprints
CPU renderer: drag frame (mean) / picture after a pan 28 ms / 3.1 s 4.7 ms / 0.4 s
GPU renderer: drag frame (mean) 4,650 ms 0.2 ms

Screenshots

Before (Roof_solid through GDAL) and after (read natively), the same area at 1:4,000:

All five layers, the attribute table, and Building_solid extruded by height, tilted 55°:

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci passes; cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passes (the full wasm link needs a wasm-capable clang for zstd, which this machine lacks; main fails the same way here).
  • 7 new tests in crates/data/src/filegdb/tests.rs: varint encodings; a hand-built geodatabase (fields, nulls, a polygon with a hole); multipatch footprints and heights (strips, rings, walls, leaning walls, walls only); sparse row indexes; compressed tables; 3,000 randomly damaged files (never a panic); and, when GDAL is installed, a geodatabase written by GDAL's OpenFileGDB driver read back (typed fields, a date, EPSG:2056 by code, a TIN as a triangle fan).
  • Checked by hand in the desktop app and the CLI with the swissBUILDINGS3D tile, with and without GDAL on the PATH; a vertex converted back to LV95 with gdaltransform matches the file to the millimetre.

Limits

  • Desktop only for now: the reader works on bytes, but the web app doesn't pass it a zipped .gdb yet.
  • Tables are read whole (up to 2 GB each), not a view at a time.
  • geo 0.33 pins i_overlay 4.x; a panic it still raises is caught (the footprint falls back to the hull), but the desktop app's crash log records caught panics too.
  • Footprints have flat roofs when extruded; real 3D surfaces would need a 3D geometry type.

The format follows GDAL's published description (dump_gdbtable's FGDB-Spec); no code was taken from GDAL.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Open Esri File Geodatabases on desktop without GDAL and browse feature classes and tables as layers.
    • Select a specific layer when opening a geodatabase. 3D multipatches appear as footprints with height information.
    • When some contents can’t be read natively, GDAL may be used as a fallback when available.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the supported-format guides with geodatabase support, layer selection, coordinate-system handling, multipatch representation, and format limitations.

A pure-Rust reader for .gdb folders: every feature class and table, all
field types, nulls, and the coordinate system by its EPSG or Esri code
(GDB_Items), else its WKT. 3D multipatches (types 54, 31 and 32) become
their footprints, the union of the faces seen from above (faces tilted
past about 87 degrees, walls, are left out), with z_min, z_max and
height fields that an extrusion stands them up by. Curves are drawn as
chords. Compressed tables, raster fields and sparse version 4 row
indexes aren't read; layer.addData and info.fileLayers then fall back
to GDAL when it is installed.

swissBUILDINGS3D's 2 km tile loads in 0.8 s instead of a 22 s GDAL
conversion, with 5,419 footprints instead of ~720,000 triangles.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds native desktop support for reading Esri File Geodatabases without GDAL. The reader parses supported tables and geometries, converts multipatches to footprints with height attributes, and reports unsupported contents. Desktop loading and layer listing use the native reader with GDAL fallback paths.

Changes: Native File Geodatabase Support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog and binary table decoding
crates/data/src/filegdb.rs, crates/data/src/filegdb/tests.rs
Recognizes geodatabases and parses catalog entries, table schemas, rows, and indexes. Applies read limits and reports unsupported or unreadable data. Tests cover decoding, malformed input, and row-index behavior.
Dataset and geometry conversion
crates/data/Cargo.toml, crates/data/src/filegdb.rs, crates/data/src/filegdb/tests.rs
Maps supported attributes and coordinate systems into datasets. Decodes supported geometries and derives multipatch footprints and height attributes. Tests cover geometry conversion and footprint limits.
Desktop integration and format documentation
crates/data/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, docs/user-guide/data*.md, ROADMAP.md, crates/data/src/filegdb/tests.rs
Exposes the reader and routes desktop loading and layer listing through it. Uses GDAL fallback when available. Updates the roadmap and format documentation. An integration test checks data read through GDAL-generated geodatabase layers.

Code review

I read crates/data/src/filegdb.rs and the crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs changes. I did not read filegdb/tests.rs or the docs changes, and I did not build or run anything. Overall the reader is careful. It uses a bounds-checked cursor, checked arithmetic, no unwrap and no unsafe, and it skips unreadable rows and counts them. I found two hostile-input problems, posted as inline comments.

Bugs

  • Unbounded row loop in row_offsets (filegdb.rs:757). For a v3 index with a bitmap, total comes straight from the header and is never capped by the stored block count. Blocks the bitmap marks absent hit continue and never reach the slot >= stored break. A tiny crafted .gdbtablx can make the loop run about 2 billion iterations, which hangs the app. Confidence: medium.
  • MAX_FACES is not enforced (filegdb.rs:964). The cap is checked once per part, but a single triangle-strip, fan or triangles part can add up to 16M faces in one extend. Each face is its own small allocation, so one hostile multipatch can use gigabytes of memory. The fix is to truncate inside each match arm. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • No other issues beyond the two resource-exhaustion cases above. Reads are bounded and the table size is capped.

Performance

  • A .gdbtable is read whole into memory (up to 2 GB natively). That is acceptable because it is capped and documented, but memory-heavy for large geodatabases. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • layers() leaves compressed tables (format 1) in the list, but read() reports them as unsupported. The listing and the read results can disagree. Confidence: low.
  • wkids() finds the coordinate system code by text-searching the first <LatestWKID> or <WKID> in the item's XML, rather than parsing the XML. It could pick up a code that isn't the spatial reference. Confidence: low.
  • catch_unwind around unary_union does nothing where panics abort, such as wasm. The code comment acknowledges this.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found: no unwrap, unsafe or panic!, and the browser build is gated with #[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))] where it uses the filesystem. I could not run cargo xtask ci or the hostile_params_never_panic test.
  • geo was already a dependency of rustgis-data, so no new licence needs checking.

A version 3 row index's row count comes from its header; with a bitmap
it wasn't capped, so a tiny index claiming billions of rows in absent
blocks walked them one by one. Blocks are now walked whole, no more
than are stored or the bitmap has bits for. The face cap is now kept
within a part too: one triangle strip could add millions of faces.

Code review

PR #697 adds a pure-Rust Esri File Geodatabase reader. The parsing is defensive: all reads go through a bounds-checked cursor, counts are capped, and rows that can't be read are skipped and counted. I found no crash, injection or memory-safety problems. I didn't run the tests, and I only skimmed filegdb/tests.rs. I posted three inline comments.

Bugs

  • Silent geometry loss when projection fails (filegdb.rs, to_lonlat_geometry). A feature with a point that can't be projected is added with no geometry. It isn't counted in report.skipped and no message is shown. Confidence: medium.
  • layers() and read() disagree about which tables count. layers() doesn't skip compressed tables or other non-zero formats, but read() does. info.fileLayers can list layers that layer.addData then reports as "not read". Confidence: low-medium.
  • Partly unsupported geodatabases don't fall back to GDAL. In add_geodatabase, the GDAL fallback only runs when the native reader returns an error. If some tables read and others are unsupported, the result is partial, with only a "not read:" note on the first layer. This is probably intended. Confidence: low.

Security

  • Nothing found. Offsets, counts and field definitions are bounds-checked, tables are capped at 2 GB, and face and part counts are capped.
  • Hostile files can still cost CPU: up to 200,000 faces go through unary_union per multipatch. Confidence: low.

Performance

  • Each table is read whole, up to 2 GB (stated in the PR's Limits). The read is also not bounded by the number of tables, so peak memory is one table at a time. This is acceptable.
  • A catch_unwind around unary_union falls back to the hull. On wasm (panic=abort) this isn't effective, as the code comment says. It also logs caught panics in the desktop crash log, as the PR notes.

Quality

  • Precision in shows (footprint). The Newell normal and area2 use absolute projected coordinates, around 2.6e6 for LV95. This can lose about 1e-3 of precision, close to the sliver threshold for small buildings. Subtract an origin before the loop. Confidence: low-medium.
  • The match … { _ if by_code.is_some() => by_code.unwrap_or(…) } in read_table is convoluted. Binding by_code first and matching on (by_code, wkt) would be clearer.
  • Multipatch part kind 5 (Ring) is treated as a new face rather than a continuation of the preceding FirstRing. This is probably harmless for the union.

AGENTS.md

  • The code follows the no-unwrap/expect/panic rule, and there is a damaged-file fuzz test.
  • The new code contains no user-visible UI strings, so tl! isn't needed.
  • Command-level hostile-parameter coverage should still be confirmed through hostile_params_never_panic, because layer.addData and info.fileLayers gained a new path.
  • geo is already a workspace dependency, so deny.toml should be fine. cargo xtask notices should be re-run if the packages' licence files change.
  • Wasm: add_geodatabase is gated with cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32")), but filegdb.rs itself is compiled for wasm. That matches the stated wasm check.

- Numbers whose bits run past 64 are refused: a varint decoding to
  i64::MIN panicked when negated.
- A table that can't be opened (too large, not readable) is said by name
and the others are still read; the reader returns the tables it
couldn't read, and layer.addData retries each through GDAL when it is
installed (else says which and why).
- A multipatch past the face cap is drawn as its points' hull, as
documented, not as part of its faces.
- Whether a face shows from above is computed from its first point:
projected coordinates lost millimetres in the products.
- Features whose coordinates can't be converted are counted in a notice.
- info.fileLayers and layer.addData list tables by one filter.

Code review

I read crates/data/src/filegdb.rs closely: byte cursor, table and row-index parsing, geometry decoding, and the multipatch footprint. I did not review the crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs or docs changes in detail, and I did not review filegdb/tests.rs or the crates/data/src/lib.rs change at all. Nothing was run, so the code is not compiled or tested. Overall the reader is careful about hostile input: reads are bounds-checked, counts are capped by the bytes left, and varints refuse overflow. I found one real concern.

Bugs

  • Union step can hang or abort (filegdb.rs:1078, medium confidence). On wasm, which always aborts on panic, catch_unwind around geo::unary_union does nothing, so a panic ends the page. That conflicts with the "never crash" rule. Nothing limits the total union work either: each feature may union up to MAX_FACES (200,000) faces, and a crafted table can hold many such features. The hull fallback or a lower cap on wasm, plus a face budget for the whole table, would limit this.

Security

  • No other issues found. The offset, count and size arithmetic is checked, and allocations are bounded by the remaining bytes.

Performance

  • Each table is read whole into memory, up to 2 GB on desktop. That is bounded and documented, so it's acceptable.

Quality

  • No other issues found.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, panic or unsafe in non-test code. The only panic handling is the catch_unwind above.
  • The new geo dependency still needs its licence checked against deny.toml. I did not verify that cargo xtask notices was re-run.
  • Interface-text rules do not apply here: the messages are data-layer report strings, not UI literals.

A table's multipatches merge at most 4 million faces in all (500,000 in
the browser): past the budget they are drawn as their points' hull, so
a crafted table can't make loading run for hours. In the browser, where
a panic in the union library can't be caught, only patches with up to
5,000 faces seen from above are merged. Hulls from walls only and from
unmerged faces are said apart.

Code review

This PR adds a GDAL-free reader for Esri File Geodatabases: crates/data/src/filegdb.rs, add_geodatabase in the engine, and docs. Multipatches are read as footprints. The parser is carefully bounded: it reads through a checked cursor, caps counts, rejects varint overflow, and skips bad rows. I only read the test file's helpers, not its test cases. I did not build or run anything.

Bugs

  • No definite bugs found.
  • Zero-area rings count as outer rings (signed_area <= 0.0), so degenerate input can become sliver polygons. Confidence: low. Inline comment posted.

Security / robustness

  • On desktop one multipatch can send up to 200k faces into a single geo::unary_union. The per-table budget (4M faces) still allows about 20 such rows, so crafted files may make loading very slow. Confidence: medium-low. Inline comment posted.
  • On wasm32 a panic inside the union library aborts, so catch_unwind doesn't help there. Only the 5k cap mitigates it, which sits uneasily with the "never crash" rule. Confidence: medium-low. Covered in the same comment.

Performance

  • read_dir reads each table whole into memory, up to 2 GiB per table on desktop. That is acceptable but heavy. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • The by_code / WKT selection in read_table is convoluted (_ if by_code.is_some() => by_code.unwrap_or(..)), and read_table is very long. Confidence: high that it's a nit. Inline comment posted.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or unsafe, and the hostile-input handling follows the guidelines.
  • std::time is not used, and the wasm caps are handled with cfg!.
  • The new geo dependency is declared in crates/data/Cargo.toml and Cargo.lock. Please confirm that cargo xtask notices was re-run and that geo's licences pass deny.toml.
  • Please confirm that hostile_params_never_panic covers the geodatabase path, and add a regression test for any crash fix.
  • The new user-visible report messages are plain format! strings in the data layer. That is consistent with other readers, and the UI layer should translate them.

A table the catalog lists whose .gdbtable or .gdbtablx is missing was
passed over silently while info.fileLayers listed it; it is now among
the tables not read, with the files missing named.

Code review

I read the new filegdb reader, the engine wiring and the roadmap and docs edits. I did not read the 25 KB test file in detail, and I could not build or run anything. The reader is carefully hardened. Counts, offsets and varints are bounded, rows that can't be read are skipped and counted, and push_next pads short attribute rows. I found no definite bugs.

Bugs

  • None confirmed.

Security / robustness

  • crates/data/src/filegdb.rs:1106 (medium confidence). catch_unwind around geo::unary_union only helps if panics unwind. If any release or wasm profile uses panic = "abort", a crafted multipatch can still kill the process. The wasm limit of 5000 faces makes this unlikely, but it is not a guarantee, and the repo's never-crash rule covers hostile input. Consider always using the hull in the browser, and check the workspace panic setting.
  • Memory (low confidence). MAX_TABLE_BYTES allows a table of up to 2 GB on desktop, and std::fs::read loads it whole. A hostile .gdb can use a lot of memory. This is bounded and probably acceptable.

Quality

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:516 (low confidence). out["features"] = … panics if out is not a JSON object. get_mut would be safer.
  • Same function (low confidence). add_reads(...)? returns early. If every layer that was read fails to add, the unread tables never go to GDAL and are never reported.
  • ROADMAP.md (low confidence). The Esri File Geodatabase entry sits in a sentence that says "in the web app too". The engine wiring is cfg(not(wasm32)), so it is desktop only. Please check the wording.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code.
  • No user-visible strings added to the UI crate, so tl! does not apply.
  • The new geo dependency (the polygon-union crate) is already a workspace dependency. Please confirm that cargo xtask notices was run, since Cargo.lock changed. Nothing in the diff shows it.
  • Regression tests are included in filegdb/tests.rs. I did not confirm that the hostile_params_never_panic test covers the new path.

In the browser, where a panic in the union library can't be caught, a
multipatch is always the hull of its points: hostile input can't end
the page. add_geodatabase builds its result without indexing into
JSON, and retries or reports the tables not read even when every layer
read natively fails to add.

Code review

This PR adds a pure-Rust Esri File Geodatabase reader (crates/data/src/filegdb.rs) and wires it into layer.addData and info.fileLayers, with GDAL as the fallback. I read the reader, the engine wiring and the test and doc changes in the diff. I did not build the code or run the tests. I read the new tests only to see what they cover, so their correctness is unchecked. The reader is carefully defensive overall. I found nothing that blocks the merge.

Bugs

  • Native read errors can be dropped (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:503, low-medium). In add_geodatabase, if add_reads fails for the natively read layers but the GDAL fallback adds an unread table, the native error is never shown. failed is only reported when results is empty. An inline comment is posted.
  • Feature ids ignore deleted rows (crates/data/src/filegdb.rs, read_table, low). push_next numbers features sequentially, while the OBJECTID attribute holds the stored row id. When rows were deleted, the two differ. This is probably acceptable, but it may surprise users who join on id.

Security / robustness

  • catch_unwind around geo::unary_union (crates/data/src/filegdb.rs:1142, low-medium). It is the only guard against a union panic on hostile input on desktop. It depends on the default panic = "unwind", and no Cargo.toml sets panic =. A comment or a CI check would stop a later change from turning one crafted row into a crash. The caught panic is still logged by the hook. An inline comment is posted.
  • Whole-table reads (low). Tables are read whole, up to 2 GB per table on desktop, so a large .gdbtable can use a lot of memory. The PR documents this limit.
  • Byte parsing uses bounds-checked reads, with counts clamped to the bytes left. The varint overflow checks, the block-count and row-count limits, and the face budgets all look correct. I found no unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code.

Performance

  • shows() allocates a new Vec for every face, and faces() builds a Vec<Vec<Vec<P3>>>. With up to 200,000 faces per row and a 4,000,000-face budget per table, this means a lot of small allocations. It is bounded, so I'd treat it as optional tuning (low).

Quality

  • own_tables lists compressed tables in layers() even though they can't be read natively. The comment says this is intended, and the GDAL fallback covers them.
  • Tables with no rows and no fields return None from read_table but still appear in layers(). This is a small inconsistency (low).

AGENTS.md

  • Never crash: followed (no unwrap, expect or panic!; hostile input is checked). The PR description reports a 3,000-file damaged-input test.
  • Wasm: followed. The union is disabled on wasm32, and cfg! is used rather than std::time.
  • The reader is not covered by hostile_params_never_panic. Please confirm that test exercises layer.addData and info.fileLayers with a .gdb path (low).
  • New dependency: geo was added to the data crate. If it was not already in the workspace graph, run cargo xtask notices. Cargo.lock shows only a one-line change, so it was probably already there.
  • Interface strings: the report messages use plain format!. They are data-layer notes rather than UI text, so this is probably fine.

I found nothing in filegdb.rs that I'd block on, so I posted no inline comments. I read the new reader (crates/data/src/filegdb.rs) in full and checked its callers' assumptions in the repo. I did not read the last ~1,000 lines of the diff: the rest of filegdb/tests.rs, lib.rs, engine/cmd/layer.rs and the docs.

Bugs

  • No confirmed bugs. The low-level readers hold up against hostile input:
    • The varint overflow checks are correct.
    • Cur::count bounds counts by the bytes left.
    • row_offsets bounds blocks by stored and by the bitmap.
    • There is no unwrap or expect in non-test code.
    • push_next pads short attribute rows, so a multipatch row that decodes without Z or fails to decode stays aligned with the fields. (confidence: high)
  • The unary_union panic catch only works if panics unwind. No panic = setting appears in any Cargo.toml today, so it works. A future panic = "abort" release profile would turn a crafted multipatch into a process abort. The doc comment on MAX_UNION_FACES already notes the dependency. (confidence: medium, low severity)
  • Dataset::push_next assigns sequential feature ids, so skipped or deleted rows shift ids away from the geodatabase's OBJECTID. The OBJECTID is still in the attribute column, so this is cosmetic. (confidence: low)
  • A row whose geometry fails to decode is counted in report.skipped, but the feature is still pushed with no geometry. That may mislead anyone reading "skipped". (confidence: low)

Security

  • No issues found. Files are treated as hostile:
    • Table size is capped (MAX_TABLE_BYTES) and there are caps on tables, fields, parts and faces.
    • A budget limits union work per table.
    • All offsets use checked arithmetic. (confidence: high)

Performance

  • Each .gdbtable is read whole into memory, up to 2 GB natively. This is documented and capped, but it will be heavy for large geodatabases. (confidence: medium, informational)
  • read_table clones the Name and Definition text values when scanning the catalog and GDB_Items. This is harmless at catalog size. (confidence: low)

Quality

  • The file is large (about 1,100 lines) and holds byte parsing, table parsing, CRS selection and multipatch geometry. Splitting the geometry and footprint code into filegdb/geometry.rs would help. (confidence: low)
  • geo is added as a dependency of rustgis-data, which also builds for wasm. AGENTS.md requires that. I did not see the wasm build run, and I did not check deny.toml licences or the cargo xtask notices refresh. Please confirm CI passes for both. (confidence: medium)

AGENTS.md

  • Never-crash rules: followed. There is no unwrap, expect or panic!, and the hostile-input handling is thorough. The new reader has regression tests. I did not confirm that hostile_params_never_panic covers the new command path. (confidence: medium)
  • Translatable strings: ReadReport messages are plain format! strings. That matches the other readers and these are data-layer messages, so I don't count it as a violation. (confidence: low)
  • ROADMAP.md and the docs are updated.
  • ATTRIBUTION.md is not touched, and no assets are added.

Code review

I read filegdb.rs in full and the engine changes in layer.rs. I did not read filegdb/tests.rs, the docs diff beyond the format-table rows, or the Cargo.toml and Cargo.lock changes in detail. I ran no code, so nothing below has been built or tested. The reader checks counts and offsets throughout and uses no unwrap, expect or unsafe. The one catch_unwind around the union is gated by the wasm32 cfg. I found no panics or logic bugs.

Bugs

  • None found.

Security

  • Memory use on a large or hostile geodatabase (medium confidence, posted inline). MAX_TABLE_BYTES is 2 GB per file on the desktop, and std::fs::read loads the whole file. The row-offset list and the decoded Dataset are then built with no cap on rows or features. A large geodatabase can use several GB of memory, and each table is loaded in turn. A lower cap, a row limit or a bounded reader would reduce this.

Performance

  • Nothing beyond the memory point above. The face and union budgets (MAX_FACES, MAX_UNION_FACES, MAX_TABLE_FACES) bound the multipatch work.

Quality

  • None found. The row_offsets block and bitmap handling is dense but bounded. The tests I did not read may cover it.

AGENTS.md

  • Docs inconsistency (high confidence, posted inline on ROADMAP.md). The sentence says "all of them in the web app too", then lists File Geodatabases. The new docs and the cfg(not(wasm32)) gates in layer.rs make geodatabases desktop-only.
  • Layering and wasm: geo is added to the data crate. Its use is cfg-gated for wasm, but I did not confirm that the wasm build and cargo deny pass. CI should check that.
  • No i18n strings are added in the files I read, and no new assets.

This PR adds a native Esri File Geodatabase reader, crates/data/src/filegdb.rs, plus engine wiring in layer.rs, docs and tests. I read the reader, the engine changes and the docs diff. I did not read filegdb/tests.rs or run anything, since I had no Bash tool.

Bugs

  • Low confidence: catch_unwind around geo::unary_union (filegdb.rs:1142) still triggers the global panic hook. A hostile multipatch can produce one hook invocation per row. That could show a crash report or dialog, or flood the log. I posted this inline. The unions flag isn't part of the merge condition, so the browser's "no union" rule is implicit rather than guarded.
  • Low confidence: GDB_Items CRS codes are matched by table name only (filegdb.rs:218). Duplicate names across feature datasets could pick the wrong CRS. I posted this inline.

Security

  • Nothing found. The byte reader is bounds-checked: Cur uses get and checked arithmetic, and the varint decoders reject overflow. Counts are limited by the bytes left and by MAX_PARTS, MAX_FIELDS, MAX_TABLES, MAX_FACES, MAX_UNION_FACES and the per-table face budget. There is no unwrap, expect or indexing in non-test code.

Performance

  • Low confidence: read_file loads whole .gdbtable and .gdbtablx files, up to 2 GB per table, with std::fs::read. The docs state this. Memory use could still spike on desktop for very large geodatabases, and the browser cap is 512 MB.

Quality

  • filegdb::read_dir and layers use std::fs, but the module isn't gated for wasm. It compiles, and the engine calls are cfg(not(wasm32)). A #[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))] on those two functions would make the "file access goes through Services on the web" rule explicit.
  • add_geodatabase has fairly intricate partial-success handling across native reads, GDAL fallback and notifications. It reads correctly to me, but I saw no engine-level test for the mixed case (some tables native, some via GDAL).

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, panic or unsafe: complied with.
  • Hostile input: complied with, and the PR adds filegdb/tests.rs. I did not check it for a regression case for each hostile path.
  • Translatable text: the new messages in the data crate are plain format!. That fits the rule, since the data layer isn't UI text.
  • Third-party licence: the new geo dependency is already a workspace dependency, so deny.toml and the licence notices should be unaffected. I didn't run cargo xtask notices, and Cargo.lock changes by only one line.

I read the new crates/data/src/filegdb.rs (the byte reader, table and row-index parsing, catalog and CRS handling, geometry decoding and multipatch footprints) in full. I did not read filegdb/tests.rs, the engine/cmd/layer.rs changes or the docs. I found no confirmed bugs, so I posted no inline comments.

Bugs

  • None confirmed. Counts and offsets are checked throughout: Cur::bytes uses checked_add, count is bounded by the bytes left, and varint/varuint refuse overflow. row_offsets caps the blocks it visits by what is stored. push_next pads short attribute rows, so rows that are not multipatches are safe next to the extra z_min/z_max/height columns.

Performance (low confidence, about 35%)

  • Union time per table. MAX_UNION_FACES is 50,000 per row and MAX_TABLE_FACES is 4,000,000 per table, spent before each union runs. A hostile table could still ask for dozens of 50k-face unions. Each can take seconds, so the worst case is minutes of load time. A union that never returns cannot be caught by catch_unwind. A tighter per-table budget, or a cap on the work for each row, would bound this better.
  • Memory. faces() clones points per face: three points per triangle, up to MAX_FACES (200k) per multipatch. This is bounded and fine, just worth knowing about.

Quality

  • Panic handling. catch_unwind around geo::unary_union is a deliberate, documented exception to the "no panics" rule. It depends on the default panic = "unwind", and I found no panic = setting in any Cargo.toml. A stray panic = "abort" in a release profile would turn it into a crash, so a short comment or test pinning that assumption would help. A caught panic also prints the default panic message to stderr (about 30% confidence that this matters).
  • Silent decode drops. Rows that fail to decode increment report.skipped, which is good. A malformed or missing z array in a multipatch with Z silently gives a flat patch with Z of 0 and a z_min/z_max computed only from the points that decoded. Because decoding errors out of decode_geometry (ok_or(())?) before then, this case seems limited to code 54 without the Z flag. That matches the documented behaviour.

Security

  • No issues found. File input is treated as hostile (size caps, bounded counts, get() over indexing, no unwrap/expect/unsafe in non-test code). geo is a new dependency in rustgis-data and builds for wasm. I did not verify that its licence is allowed by deny.toml, and the diff does not show THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt being updated.

AGENTS.md

  • Third-party notices. Cargo.lock gains geo for rustgis-data. AGENTS.md says to run cargo xtask notices after dependency changes. THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt is not in the changed-file list, so confirm that geo was already in the dependency tree or that the notices are current (about 40% confidence).
  • Translatable strings. The report.messages strings are plain format!. That is probably acceptable for data-reader notes, but AGENTS.md prefers i18n::fmt for user-visible messages. The data crate sits below the UI, so this is likely fine (low confidence).
