Summary

When write_new cannot exclusively create its staging path, its error cleanup currently removes whatever already occupies that path. A file collision can therefore delete an unrelated file; on Unix the same cleanup can unlink an existing or dangling symlink.

Open the file before entering the cleanup scope, so cleanup is reached only after this invocation successfully created it. Release the handle before removing a failed write. The Shapefile caller records a staging path for rollback only after creating and writing it successfully, so a collision is never added to the caller's cleanup list. The existing atomic replacement and error propagation behavior are retained.

Add generated regressions for file collisions, valid and dangling Unix symlinks, and a failed install that must preserve the destination directory and remove its staging file. The patch changes only crates/data/src/io.rs, with no dependency, manifest, configuration or workflow changes.

Testing

Validation below is reused from the unchanged source snapshot committed as d560798; submission did not rerun builds or tests.

  • Windows/MSVC: the new file-collision regression first reproduced the old implementation's deletion (NotFound when reading the original file). After the fix, cargo test --locked --offline -j 2 -p rustgis-data --lib io::tests:: passed all 20 tests.
  • macOS ARM64 and Linux ARM64, Rust 1.95.0, ordinary users: io::tests::staging_collision passed 2 tests per platform, including the valid/dangling symlink regression; io::tests::write_atomic passed 2 tests per platform, including successful replacement and failed-install cleanup. All filters were checked for nonzero, exact test counts and zero ignored tests.
  • Windows: cargo clippy --locked --offline -j 2 -p rustgis-data --lib --tests -- -D warnings passed. Formatting and diff checks passed.
  • Source digests were checked across the validated snapshots and final working tree. The save-as fix is not included or required.

Full-workspace CI and Linux x86_64 runtime tests were not rerun locally; new PR checks are separate evidence. Disk exhaustion, actual sync failures and power-loss behavior were not tested.

Review follow-up (1973093)

Fixed the valid outside-diff review finding in Shapefile staging: its caller could still delete a colliding entry during rollback. Added an end-to-end regression through the public writer covering all five components, preserving original components and foreign entries, cleaning owned staging files, and successfully retrying afterward. Each collision runs in a fresh child process to isolate the staging counter.

  • The new regression reproduced the caller bug before the fix on macOS (the colliding file was deleted).
  • At the updated source snapshot, the exact new regression passed on Windows (1 test, 5 file-collision scenarios) and macOS ARM64/Linux ARM64 (1 test and 15 file/live-symlink/dangling-symlink scenarios per platform), with zero ignored tests. Existing platform environments and build caches were reused.
  • Windows data-crate Clippy (--lib --tests -- -D warnings), formatting and diff checks passed again for this change.
  • The earlier helper regression results above remain applicable. CI, Python and docs checks all passed at d560798; checks on the new commit are tracked separately. No unrelated test suite was rerun.

Test harness follow-up (b6aaa5a)

The collision regression now uses an isolated RAII temporary directory, explicitly checks successful cleanup, and requires each child to report exactly one passing, non-ignored test plus its completed case marker. This prevents successful zero-test child runs from silently passing the parent.

Windows/MSVC: the exact regression passed (1 test, 5 file-collision scenarios, zero ignored). A deliberately out-of-range child case failed with no new temporary directory remaining; a successful zero-match harness result was confirmed not to satisfy the new output conditions. Formatting and diff checks passed. No full suite or Unix symlink cases were rerun locally; new-head CI is separate evidence.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Existing files and symlink targets are preserved when a write encounters a name collision.
    • Failed installs no longer leave behind temporary files, and the contents of occupied directories remain unchanged.
    • Shapefile writes handle staging-name collisions safely, preserving existing data and allowing a later retry to succeed.
    • These safeguards apply to both direct file writes and Shapefile writes, including cases where installation fails.

Code review

I found no bugs, security problems or AGENTS.md violations in this PR. I read the diff and the surrounding code in crates/data/src/io.rs, but did not run any tests.

What changed: write_new now opens the staging file (create_new) before the closure that writes and syncs it. The drop(f) before the cleanup is deliberate, so the file handle is closed before remove_file runs.

What I checked:

  • Collision handling: the old code opened the file inside the closure, so an AlreadyExists error counted as a write failure. The cleanup then ran remove_file and deleted the unrelated file that caused the collision. Now an open failure returns early with ? and never reaches the cleanup. The fix is correct.
  • Symlinks: create_new fails with EEXIST on a dangling or live symlink and doesn't follow it. The new test covers both cases.
  • Failure cleanup: the write or sync error path still removes the file it created. This is correct because create_new means that file is ours.
  • write_atomic: it still removes its own staging file if the rename fails. The new test covers this by renaming onto a non-empty directory.
  • Never-crash rules: the new code uses no unwrap, expect or panic, only ? and ok_or_else. The tests follow the same pattern.
  • Wasm: only std::fs and std::env are used, and this path is native file I/O, so nothing here breaks the wasm build.

Quality (minor, low confidence)

  • The new tests leave their temp files behind if an assertion fails before the final remove_file. They also use fixed base names under the shared temp directory. The names are made unique by temp_beside's pid and counter, so this is acceptable and not worth changing.
  • drop(f) is needed in the new write_new, because f is declared outside the closure. A short comment saying the handle closes before the cleanup could help future readers.

Record a staging path only after write_new succeeds.

When a pre-existing staging file or symlink occupies tmp, write_new returns AlreadyExists without creating or removing it. The Shapefile path records tmp before that call, then the error cleanup removes every recorded path. This can delete the pre-existing staging entry and returns an error from write_path, causing data loss for the unrelated file or symlink.

Record only paths successfully created by this operation. Keep cleanup for those paths.

Code review

The fix is correct and I found no bugs in the changed production code.

What I checked

  • write_new in crates/data/src/io.rs now opens the file with create_new before the cleanup scope, so a failed open (AlreadyExists, or a symlink that is not followed) returns before any remove_file runs. A collision can no longer delete a file or symlink it did not create.
  • Dropping the handle before remove_file is right for Windows. A failed write after a successful create still removes the partial file this call made.
  • In the Shapefile staging loop, written now records a pair only after write_new succeeds. The caller's cleanup therefore never removes a colliding path it doesn't own. write_new already removes its own partial file on failure, so nothing leaks.
  • write_atomic is unchanged in behaviour: write_new(...)? returns before the rename on a collision, and a failed rename still removes the staging file.
  • The change adds no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe outside tests, and no dependency, wasm or layering impact. The new tests use ? throughout.

Bugs

None found.

Security

None. The change removes a delete-what-you-didn't-create path, including through symlinks.

Performance

None.

Quality

  • Fragile test coupling (confidence: medium-low). shapefile_staging_collisions_preserve_existing_entries hard-codes several implementation details.
    • It hard-codes the test path io::tests::shapefile_staging_collisions_preserve_existing_entries, so moving the module or renaming the test makes the child run zero tests. The child then exits successfully and the parent passes without checking anything. Asserting the child's stdout contains 1 passed, or reading the module path from module_path!(), would guard against that.
    • It rebuilds the staging name as .{file}.{pid}.{index}.tmp, which depends on the format in temp_beside and on the COUNTER still being zero at the first write_path. If temp_beside changes, or write_path starts allocating names earlier, the collision silently stops colliding. The AlreadyExists assertion would then fail, which is loud but confusing.
  • Cost and cleanup of that test (confidence: low). It spawns parts.len() × 3 processes (about 15 on Unix). Temp directories are only removed at the end of the happy path, so a failed assertion leaves rustgis-shp-collision-* behind. The same applies to the other new tests. A small drop guard would fix this. These are nits.
  • PR description (confidence: low). It says the validation was "reused from an unchanged source snapshot" and that no builds or tests were run for this head. The head commit is 1973093, not the validated d560798, so rely on the CI results.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations seen. This is crates/data only, with no UI strings, assets or dependencies.
  • Reminder: run cargo xtask ci before merge. I couldn't run it here.
  • The "every crash fix gets a regression test" rule is satisfied by the added tests.

Code review

The PR makes two fixes in crates/data/src/io.rs:

  • Staging cleanup: write_path_in now records a staged temp file only after write_new succeeds. Before, a create_new collision (AlreadyExists) left the unrelated colliding entry in the cleanup list, and the error path then deleted it.
  • Windows file handle: write_new now opens the file first and drops the handle before removing a failed write. This fixes deleting an open file on Windows.

I read the diff and temp_beside. I did not build or run the tests, because I had no shell.

I found no bugs. In the new code, write_new leaves a pre-existing file alone when create_new fails, since the open happens before the cleanup scope. Staged files from earlier parts are still removed on failure. The tests cover the changed paths.

Bugs

None found.

Security

None found. create_new refuses to follow existing files or symlinks, and the tests check that symlinks and their targets are left alone, including dangling links.

Performance

None found.

Quality

  • Test coupling (low confidence, nit). shapefile_staging_collisions_preserve_existing_entries rebuilds the temp name as .<file>.<pid>.<index>.tmp. This assumes the format of temp_beside and that the staging counter starts at 0 and equals the part index. If either changes, the test fails with a confusing error. A shared helper or a #[cfg(test)] constructor next to temp_beside would keep the two in sync.
  • Leftover files on failure (low confidence, nit). staging_collision_* and write_atomic_failed_install_* create files in the shared std::env::temp_dir() and remove them only at the end. If an assertion fails first, they stay behind. The shapefile test already uses tempfile, so the others could too.
  • Test output matching (low confidence, nit). The parent test spawns child processes and matches libtest's test result: ok. 1 passed; ... text on stdout. That wording is not a stable interface, though it works today.
  • Test cost (low confidence). The shapefile test spawns up to parts × 3 child processes. That is fine for CI, but a note on why the per-process isolation is needed (the global counter) would help. The in-code comment partly covers it.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, and the tests use ?.
  • The new tests are gated with cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32")) and cfg(unix) where needed, so the wasm build is not affected.
  • The changes follow the "every crash fix gets a regression test" rule.
