Description

Adds a design doc proposing a reorganization of the e2e test suite so that each API/component — catalogd (ClusterCatalog), operator-controller (ClusterExtension), and object-controller (ClusterObjectSet/ClusterObjectDeployment) — is independently testable with its own set of features, while still supporting a single run across all of them (go test ./test/e2e/...).

What the doc covers

  • Approach: directory-per-component (operator-controller/, catalogd/, object-controller/, platform/) plus an extractable shared/ library, so a future repo split is close to a git mv.
  • Cross-cutting feature ownership — a table mapping each existing feature to an owner, with genuinely cross-component features (metrics, demos) in a platform/ bucket.
  • Shared library boundary — world/hooks/common steps/runner boilerplate; note that test/upgrade-e2e already consumes the steps package and simply becomes another consumer.
  • Three-phase PR sequence: (1) reroot layout + establish shared, (2) sort features into component suites, (3) split the step library per component — with the rationale for why phase 2 is safe before phase 3.
  • Open decisions left for review (the platform/ bucket, per-component Makefile targets, home of upgrade_steps.go).

This is a design/RFC doc only — no code changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a draft design for organizing end-to-end tests into component-specific suites and a cross-component platform suite.
    • The proposal describes shared test utilities, how to run all suites or an individual suite, feature assignment and tag selection, and a staged migration plan.
    • It also documents verification checks and open decisions about suite layout, Makefile targets, and upgrade test placement.

- Around line 73-75: Update the “Run all” guidance to preserve the existing
Godog tag policy: document invocations that exclude @demo and run @Serial
separately, or make the existing Make target the canonical run-all command. Keep
the run-one guidance aligned with the intended per-component behavior.
- Line 108: Update the Runner boilerplate design so the extractable shared
helper does not depend on test/internal/summary; keep the summary callback in
each repository’s suite_test.go or place the summary code under the shared
library. Retain the other listed runner responsibilities as appropriate.
- Line 73: Update the “Run all” command in the e2e-per-component design to
include Go’s -count=1 flag, ensuring repeat runs execute tests instead of
reusing cached results.
- Line 136: Update the demo workflow path references alongside the later
`demos.feature` and demo step-file moves in the `git mv` plan, so each move
keeps the workflow aligned with the files’ new locations.

- Step definitions live in a single shared package `test/e2e/steps` (~5,000 lines total; `steps.go` alone is ~2,800), consumed by both the e2e suite **and** `test/upgrade-e2e`.
- Selection is driven by `--godog.tags` and feature paths from the Makefile. Existing tags: `@Serial`, `@demo`, `@BoxcutterRuntime`, `@TLSProfile`.

**Driver (stated):** The components may eventually move to **separate repositories**. We want each component treated as its own thing — independently testable, with its own set of features — while keeping a way to run everything together. This favors **physical separation** (per-component test packages, features, and suite entrypoints) over logical tag-only separation, because a future repo split should be close to a `git mv`.

eventually move to separate repositories might be an overstatement - but I think testing each API separately with its own set of features makes a lot of sense (and if eventually we'd like to split the controllers into their own projects, it would certainly be helpful to have the tests logically separated)

Document the plan to reorganize the e2e suite so each API/component
(catalogd, operator-controller, object-controller) is independently
testable with its own features, while still supporting a single run
across all of them. Covers the target directory layout, the shared
library boundary, cross-cutting feature ownership, and a three-phase
PR sequence (reroot + shared, sort features, split steps).

### How "run one" and "run all" work

- **Run all:** Go's `...` wildcard (`go test ./test/e2e/...`) discovers and runs every component subpackage automatically — no central list to maintain. The canonical run-all stays the `make test-e2e` target, which already carries the established invocation: `-count=1` (test caching off, so every run actually contacts the cluster) and the two-pass tag policy — `~@Serial && ~@demo` concurrently, then `@Serial && ~@demo` serially, with `@demo` run only by `update-demos.yaml`.

Serialize @Serial scenarios across component packages.

When make test-e2e changes to run go test ./test/e2e/..., --godog.concurrency=1 serializes scenarios only within each package. Go can run separate package test binaries concurrently, so @Serial scenarios from different suites can overlap. Make the serial pass use -p=1 or invoke each package sequentially.

### Non-Goals

- **True dependency isolation / mocking.** These are e2e tests against a real cluster. "Independently testable" means *a component's suite can be run on its own and contains the scenarios it owns* — not that operator-controller is tested without a real catalogd. The install path legitimately depends on catalogd serving a catalog; that remains an integration reality.
