Replace the overloaded ValidationFailure reason with two reasons that
distinguish a retryable obstruction from a spec-edit-required error:
- PreconditionsNotMet: a pre-apply precondition is not yet satisfied
(a missing/mutable/changed referenced Secret, or a preflight dry-run
rejected by an immutable field, a conflicting object, or RBAC /
dependency CRDs not yet propagated). The reconciler requeues on a
timer and the revision recovers once the precondition is met.
- InvalidSpecification: the revision spec is invalid (a malformed
revision/phase object or progression probe). The reconciler does not
requeue; a spec change is required.
ClusterExtension reconstruction maps PreconditionsNotMet to
Progressing=True/Retrying and InvalidSpecification to
Progressing=False/Blocked, so a recoverable obstruction and a
spec-edit-required error are no longer conflated under one reason.
Each reason carries a curated, action-oriented condition message (what
failed and how to resolve it); the raw error is logged at V(1). These
messages also surface on the ClusterExtension Progressing condition.
Experimental API only.

Description
Splits the overloaded
ClusterObjectSet(COS)Ready=FalsereasonValidationFailureinto two reasons that distinguish a retryable obstruction from a spec-edit-required error, so theClusterExtensioncan map them to the correctProgressingsemantics.Today
ValidationFailureis set by six code paths with two different behaviors:configValidationError: an invalid revision spec) does not requeue and needs a spec editBecause they share a single reason,
progressingFromReadycan't tell them apart, so it must pick one mapping for both — which is wrong for the other.Changes
api/v1, experimental): replaceClusterObjectSetReasonValidationFailurewithClusterObjectSetReasonPreconditionsNotMetandClusterObjectSetReasonInvalidSpecification; update theReadycondition doc comment.PreconditionsNotMet, theconfigValidationErrorsite →InvalidSpecification.common_controller.go):PreconditionsNotMet→Progressing=True/Retrying;InvalidSpecification→Progressing=False/Blocked;determineFailureReasonflags both asInstalled=Failed(unchanged behavior for the install condition).V(1). These messages also surface on theClusterExtensionProgressingcondition.clusterobjectset_controller_test.go,*_internal_test.go,resolve_ref_test.go,common_controller_test.go), therevision.featuremutable/changed-Secret scenarios, the concept + large-bundle docs, and regenerated CRD/manifests/API reference.Scope
Experimental API only;
go-apidiff/crd-diffwill flag the replaced reason constant.Context
This is the proper fix for the overload called out in review on #3012 (where
ValidationFailurewas temporarily mapped toRetryingas a stopgap). #3012 is rebased on top of this so it drops the stopgap and keeps only theRetryableErrorremoval.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
