Make the core store own the per-app sign-policy tier, with the row as its index and floor - #532

Follows #456, which moved per-app sign-policy overrides into the core-owned store but left both stores holding a tier and resolution reconciling them by asking which side to believe. That reconciliation produced the repair machinery around it: a mirror restore after a failed clear, a re-assert of the previous tier on an unconfirmed write, and an expiry rule that had to retire two copies.
The core store now owns the tier: it is what a write has to land in, and what the signing path reads. The Room
nip55_app_settingsrow carries the three things the core cannot. The window the override expires at, since the core keeps no expiry. A record of the pinning the lifecycle sweeps can enumerate, since the core store cannot be listed, though it answers for one package. And the last tier the user chose, which seeds the startup migration and acts as a strictness floor.Resolution takes the stricter of the two, so the row is a floor rather than a second opinion. That matters because
setAppOverridereturningfalsedoes not say which value is stored: the prefs layer applies to its in-memory map before the disk write, so the core can serve a new tier for the rest of a session while its file still holds the old one. A floor never has to decide which side is newer, which is what made the previous scheme hard to reason about. When only one side knows of an override, a tier exists but which one is unknown, and that resolves to Manual. Not to the global, which may be looser than what the user chose, and not to whichever side answered, which may be the stale one. So an unmigrated row, a partial write, a stranded tier and a read fault all tighten.
Write ordering falls out of the row being the index. A set writes the row first, so a tier write that does not land leaves the app pinned-but-unknown, which is Manual. If that row write throws, the tier write is attempted anyway and the failure rethrown afterwards: under the floor a core holding the new tier against a row holding the old one resolves to the stricter of the two, so attempting it preserves a tightening and refuses a loosening. A clear drops the row first, which takes the chosen tier out of force, and leaving the row instead would let the migration copy its tier back into the empty slot at the next startup and revert the clear outright. A clear whose row write throws leaves both stores untouched, since there is no tightening to preserve.
The migration is gated on a one-shot marker rather than on the core looking empty. The encrypted-prefs layer returns the default when a value cannot be decrypted, so an unreadable store is indistinguishable from an unset one, and re-running would copy a row's tier over a stricter one chosen since.
SignPolicySelectionPrefs.migrateLegacyGlobalPolicyalready gates the global selection's copy this way for the same reason. The account-switch wipe no longer bulk-deletes. A row goes only when its tier is confirmed gone or it never carried one, which also covers a row that appears while the clears are running. A row it cannot drop is rewritten to Manual with its expiry window nulled, so it still indexes the tier for a later wipe to clear without handing the next account the previous one's choice or its time box.
Net effect:
strictersurvives as a three-line floor, while the mirror restore, the re-assert and the which-store-is-authoritative reasoning are gone.Verification
Checked as a state-space comparison against
mainrather than a diff read, across row state (absent, present, no tier, expired, out-of-range ordinal), core state (absent, holding a tier, unreadable, no store this session) and the global. Three cells were found looser thanmainduring review and fixed here: a tier known only to the core, a tightening whose core write was never confirmed, and a tightening whose row write throws, which skipped the tier write entirely and left both stores on the old tier. That third one is worth naming as a gap in the method as much as in the code. Comparing resolution given a state does not ask which states each version can reach when a write fails partway, and that is where it was hiding. The write paths are now compared by failure mode as well: row write throws, tier write returns false, both, and each direction of the clear.
Also relevant to upgrades: no shipped release ever wrote a per-app core override key (
v1.3.0has nosetAppOverridein main source, and #456 is in no tag), so every upgrading install has an empty core slot and lands in the stricter cell.Instrumented tests cover the floor in both directions including across the middle tier, a one-sided tier resolving Manual, an unconfirmed tightening surviving into a process whose core file still holds the old looser tier, a set whose row write throws still writing the tier, an unconfirmed clear, a clear whose row write throws leaving the override in force, a clear with no core store, a lapsed row retiring the override, the Manual rewrite in both branches of the account-switch wipe, and the lifecycle sweeps.
