Resolves #2669.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Protocol validation now accepts unknown, http11, http2, and http3 regardless of letter case. Unsupported values, such as http10, continue to return an error.

Walkthrough

Protocol validation now accepts http2 and http3, including case variants. Table-driven tests cover empty, supported, and unsupported protocol values.

runner/options.go, runner/options_test.go
ValidateOptions accepts http2 and http3 case-insensitively. Tests cover empty and supported values, plus invalid values that must return errors.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: dogancanbakir

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 4236d

The change lets -pr http2 and -pr http3 pass validation, but the new test file is malformed. It currently breaks the release build. Its "unknown" expectation would also fail once the file compiles. Mixed-case protocol values are accepted but passed on unchanged, so -pr HTTP11 may not actually force HTTP/1.1. The broken build blocks merging until the test file is fixed.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4236d

HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 options now pass validation, but accepting them does not establish that requests use the selected protocol. This can undermine protocol-specific scan coverage. No newly introduced privilege expansion or network-policy bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: Newly accepted HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 selections are passed unchanged to a consumer that does not distinguish them from its default protocol setting. Protocol-specific security scans could consequently exercise a different protocol than requested without validation rejecting the unsupported selection. This is a contract-enforcement concern, not a verified exploitable vulnerability.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is caller-selected outbound protocol behavior in the runner. Newly admitted values reach existing default client construction; the inspected path does not establish additional destination access or greater authority than the previously accepted empty option.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The primary transport retains the configured dialer and optional network policy, with redirect behavior configured independently of http2/http3. These controls are not replaced by a newly selected transport in this PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make accepted protocol values correspond to explicit transport policies, rejecting unsupported selections rather than silently using default behavior. Verify negotiated protocols and fallback outcomes so protocol-specific scan coverage is dependable.

Explanation

Issue #2669 requires protocol validation to accept unknown, http11, http2, and http3. runner/options.go implements this change. Issue #2669 also identifies missing ALPN and ineffective transport TLSClientConfig as related coding defects. The PR does not change common/httpx/httpx.go; its buildTLSDialer still calls DialTLS without the transport config, and no NextProtos change is present. The new runner/options_test.go also has no package or import declarations, so the added test cannot compile.

Add the package declaration and test imports.

This file starts with func, so Go cannot compile it. The release-test pipeline reports expected 'package', found 'func'. Add package runner and imports for testing and github.com/stretchr/testify/require.

Correct the "unknown" expectation.

httpx.UNKNOWN is "", not "unknown". ValidateOptions rejects "unknown", so this case will fail after the file compiles. Set wantErr to true, or change the validator if the literal word is intended to be supported.

Normalize accepted protocol values before the runtime handoff.

Validation accepts mixed-case values, but runner/runner.go passes the original value to httpxOptions.Protocol. The exact HTTP11 comparison in common/httpx/httpx.go can therefore miss the branch that disables HTTP/2. Normalize the value after validation so all accepted protocols reach exact-value dispatch consistently.
