Proposed Changes

Fixes #2669

Problem

  1. Options Validation: -pr http2 and -pr http3 were documented in flag help (-pr, -protocol string protocol to use (unknown, http11, http2 [experimental], http3 [experimental])), but ValidateOptions() in runner/options.go rejected them with invalid protocol: ....
  2. Missing ALPN: In common/httpx/httpx.go, buildTLSDialer called h.Dialer.DialTLS(ctx, network, addr) without configuring NextProtos. As a result, no ALPN extension was sent on the wire during TLS handshakes, preventing HTTP/2 negotiation and causing CDN bot blocks.
  3. Transport Configuration: The http.Transport was not configured with consistent TLSClientConfig / Protocols for HTTP/2.

Solution

  1. In runner/options.go: Allow http2 and http3 in ValidateOptions().
  2. In common/httpx/httpx.go:
    • Updated buildTLSDialer to construct tls.Config with proper NextProtos based on options.Protocol ([]string{"http/1.1"} for HTTP11, []string{"h2"} for HTTP2, and []string{"h2", "http/1.1"} for default/unknown) and pass it to h.Dialer.DialTLSWithConfig.
    • Wired NextProtos and Protocols on http.Transport instances.
  3. Added unit tests:
    • TestProtocolALPNConfiguration in common/httpx/httpx_test.go verifying NextProtos matches protocol selection.
    • TestProtocolValidation in runner/runner_test.go validating accepted protocols.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for selecting http2 and http3 protocol values in configuration.
    • TLS connections now advertise protocol options based on the selected HTTP protocol, improving protocol negotiation for HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2.

…tocols

- Allow http2 and http3 in ValidateOptions (-pr/options.Protocol)
- Propagate ALPN NextProtos (h2, http/1.1) in TLS config and pass it to fastdialer DialTLSWithConfig
- Configure transport Protocols and ALPN consistently for HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2
- Add tests for ALPN configuration and protocol validation

Walkthrough

HTTPX now configures TLS SNI and ALPN based on the selected protocol across its transport paths. Protocol validation also accepts http2 and http3. Tests cover ALPN configuration and accepted or rejected protocol values.

Protocol support and TLS negotiation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol acceptance and TLS negotiation
runner/options.go, common/httpx/httpx.go, runner/runner_test.go, common/httpx/httpx_test.go
Protocol validation now accepts http2 and http3. HTTPX configures SNI and protocol-specific ALPN on its transports and TLS dialers. Tests check transport ALPN values and protocol validation.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: dogancanbakir

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 30b98

Default-mode requests to HTTP/2 servers can fail, and some accepted protocol options or HTTP/2 probes do not behave as selected. Resolve these negotiation issues before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 30b98

The default client advertises HTTP/2 without consistently enabling its handler. Some resulting failures can activate a fallback client that does not inherit the selected network, redirect, or proxy controls. The change also stops honoring explicit ZTLS selection for ordinary HTTP connections. These are bounded transport-control risks, not evidence of a new privilege-escalation capability.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The default primary transport newly advertises h2 without enabling its HTTP/2 handler. If the resulting protocol mismatch produces a malformed-response error recognized by the retry layer, execution switches to a fallback client that does not inherit the selected target policy, redirect restrictions, proxy, or SNI. This creates broader potential activation of an existing less-controlled path; the fallback bypass primitive itself predates the PR.
  • Low · architecture · observed: Replacing DialTLS with DialTLSWithConfig bypasses the dependency's WithZTLS dispatcher for non-impersonated HTTP connections, despite retaining the ZTLS option. The separate metadata probe still uses that dispatcher. This creates inconsistent ownership of the selected TLS engine across request and metadata paths; opportunistic ZTLS fallback does not restore explicit selection.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant authority is the scanner process's outbound network access. An initially reachable remote endpoint controls negotiation and responses; a less-controlled fallback can then affect subsequent destinations or redirects. Exposure depends on the selected policy and network environment. No new tenant, credential, or process privilege is established by the inspected change.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The concern is conditional: h2 negotiation on the default primary transport can encounter a missing handler; only errors matching the retry layer's malformed-response conditions invoke its separate fallback. That client lacks HTTPX's custom network and redirect controls. A malicious endpoint could already trigger the fallback before this PR, so broader activation is inferred rather than a newly verified exploit or new maximum attack scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Both directly constructed HTTPX transports now use the same configured fastdialer, which filters resolved IP addresses and ports before dialing. The primary's proxy selection and redirect restrictions remain present. These controls must be distinguished from the retry dependency's separately constructed fallback client.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Ordinary TLS configurations and failed handshakes are isolated per connection. The inspected dependency also contains incomplete cleanup on some impersonation and ZTLS error paths, but those implementations predate the PR; they are not retained as introduced concerns. Explicit ZTLS selection now differs between HTTP requests and metadata probing.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define one per-client negotiation contract tying accepted protocol values to wire ALPN, installed handlers, TLS-engine selection, and fallback authority. Any fallback should retain the same target, redirect, proxy, and identity controls. Validate this contract through actual negotiation and recovery paths, including mixed-host concurrency and handshake failure.

Enable HTTP/2 in the default transport.

When Protocol is UNKNOWN, the primary transport advertises h2 but leaves Protocols nil. Because it uses a custom DialTLSContext and TLSClientConfig, Go 1.26 keeps HTTP/2 disabled. A server that negotiates h2 therefore has no HTTP/2 handler in this transport, and the request can fail.

Suggested fix
 	} else if httpx.Options.Protocol == HTTP2 {
 		var p http.Protocols
 		p.SetHTTP2(true)
 		transport.Protocols = &p
+	} else {
+		var p http.Protocols
+		p.SetHTTP1(true)
+		p.SetHTTP2(true)
+		transport.Protocols = &p
 	}

Add an end-to-end test with an httptest TLS server that has EnableHTTP2 set. Use Protocol: UNKNOWN, then assert that the request succeeds with resp.ProtoMajor == 2.

Use h2 for the secondary HTTP/2 probe dialer.

The secondary transport enables HTTP/2, but buildTLSDialer(options) advertises only http/1.1 when Protocol is HTTP11. The -http2 probe can then receive an HTTP/1.1 response or fail negotiation, so SupportHTTP2 returns false instead of detecting HTTP/2.

This is separate from enabling the primary transport's HTTP/2 handler.

Handle http3 explicitly.

http3 enters the default branch in New and buildTLSDialer. The TLS configuration advertises only h2 and http/1.1, and this path has no QUIC or HTTP/3 transport. A user who selects -pr http3 therefore receives default TCP negotiation without a warning.

Either implement an HTTP/3 transport, or log a warning that http3 falls back to the default negotiation.
