Currently that refers just to the local wheel cache the build uses as it works, which seems to contain stuff like tooling wheels that get reused. It's also possible if we want to implement caching that the bootstrap process can pull existing wheels from a cache server to the local directory for use in the airgap to cut down on build times
There was a problem hiding this comment.
OK, that does make sense. A fresh raw build shouldn't have much in that cache and should not rebuild anything in the graph more than once, so make sure you consider the remote cache, too.

Yes, for the bootstrap phase, it checks the remote cache, so we pre-load all the remote wheels at that point before passing it on to the next step

How will the build tool decide whether it needs to build something in the graph or if it can use a wheel it finds in a cache? Still the build tag? Does the graph need to include any information that it doesn't today to make that possible, or are the config files (with the change logs) still part of the inputs?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Let me make sure, but generally since we create the graph of all the necessary builds at bootstrap time, it can just consume and build those, using the same reuse logic it already has for things it's built previously
There was a problem hiding this comment.
If the final index where we're pushing something already includes the right version of a package that shows up in the graph we don't have to rebuild it. Doing that would mean building something like setuptools every night, for example. So we still want to look at the graph, figure out if we have an artifact that matches what we would build, and then decide if we need to build each thing.

There is a related identity question for prepared sdists. A patched and an upstream sdist can have the same project name and version, unlike wheel filenames, sdist filenames have no separate build tag. If a workspace or cache contains stale artifacts from another preparation run, how does a graph node select and validate the exact prepared sdist?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
For the pipeline case, this won't be an issue as we'll prepare the directory each run. For the case where things are cached in the directory, the current logic selects by expected filename, including any package naming hooks, and falls back to checking the existing files for the source tree to determine the version.

Issue #995 has the same broader goal: fully separate dependency discovery from building, so the build stage neither reruns discovery hooks nor needs network access.
|
I found several open issues that would help place this proposal in context: #797 asks for a prepared layout and offline build-sequence; its author agreed that #995 covers the same goal. Could this proposal state which parts of those issues build-parallel --offline addresses, and which remain follow-up work? In particular, the required prepared artifacts, source-tree versus sdist input, and offline cache behavior seem worth deciding here. I would treat this PR as partial work toward #995 and #797, rather than closing either issue. |
| ## Why | ||
|
|
||
| Preparing source distributions and their build environments can require network | ||
| access and package-specific hooks. Repeating those steps in every wheel-build |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
In bootstrap, nodes reached as build requirements are still built as wheels so their consumers build environments can be populated. When build-parallel --offline traverses the completed graph, are those nodes considered satisfied by their bootstrap-produced wheels, or are they candidates for another wheel build?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The graph takes into account the full set needed to build the wheels, so the leaf nodes will satisfy all the build reqs. Those then get cached and reused for subsequent packages that need them, yes.

Could you update the draft to reflect the linked issue discussions and the review threads here?
The How and Example sections should show the preparation workflow, required inputs, wheel-cache behavior, and source-tree versus sdist choice.
Please mark any decisions that remain open or are deferred to another issue.

Use build-parallel --offline for the prepared-workspace consumer.
This paragraph conflicts with the workflow and example, which identify build-parallel --offline as the command that consumes the prepared graph and workspace. Naming bootstrap-parallel --offline introduces a separate, undefined workflow.

Expand the offline build-parallel proposal based on PR review: - Explain why the mode is opt-in and that it is meant to become the default, and eventually the only, behavior of the build commands, following the intended bootstrap/build split (python-wheel-build#995). - Note that wheels already built during preparation, such as build requirements, are satisfied from the local wheel repository. - State the sdist contract: every package is expected to be buildable from its own sdist, describe how the prepared sdist and source tree are located and validated, and mark content digests a non-goal. - Require the preparation run to start from a clean output directory. - Document limitations for remote wheel caches and package indexes, and for the package hooks of the skipped phases. - Link the related open issues and state which parts of them this proposal addresses versus leaves as follow-up work.
